What is the point of telling the Fever to fire up though ?

It's like people asking me why the crowds are down.  How the f**k would I know, I'm there every week.  The problem is getting everyone else there, and then your first question is does everyone else know the game is on ?

How's my driving? - Whine here

Ive said it before but I will continue to say it- The club are MIA, do they have a marketing guy? What is he doing? Cant be anything new, because they haven't done anything new.
It shouldn't be YF walking the streets handing out flyers it should be the team, it should be Daniel and Fred doing some juggling/trix/freestyle on Cuba and in Midland park tomorrow lunchtime, little things. Get a presence in the non-footballing community which they simply don't have

The last comment was uncalled for.

Still numbers even in the YFZ were down on Sunday. The big shirt almost didn't make it up to the top.

Its attitudes like the first guy "Stew" in this article on the crowd size that are really hurting it - I know NZ is a fair weather crowd for the most part but comments like that are doing the extra damage, all of a sudden even winning isn't enough to draw crowds?

The worse thing about that article was that it was tucked away in the corner of the inside sports page, would have been better high profile on the back page

Did crowd numbers drop off in Movember last year too?

Disagree the spend is the same as last year ie: Bus shelters, paper, we even had ads running on Prime and Sky last week. YF did a great effort and handed flyers out last week and we will be doing more this week.  Major reasons why the drop:

1. Kick off at 6pm - Dictated by TV

2. Economic environment

3. Last year we were getting nearly 2k corporate box holders and deloitte members there. Last game there was 510 people

Hopefully this week it will change with the Friday night game.

Tony this is my point, last year we were new, a novelty, the whole experience was something that Wellingtonians hadn't seen before. Thats why this year there needed/needs to be a ramp up. Season 2 was always going to be harder than Season 1 in this regard. The other points you make are all fair I just think the club needs to be more proactivebopman2008-11-25 19:54:47

I've organised a group of 30 from work for this Friday's game.

Some of the group went once last year and enjoyed it but needed a little nudge to go again. Many will be first timers who always wanted to go but also needed a bit of encouragement. Let's be honest - the early season performances and negative, but often deserved, press hasn't help get last season's "discretionary" punters back.

I know they will enjoy the atmosphere but whether they come back again will depend, to a significant degree, on the Nix on field performance. If the on field product is to a good standard (i.e. entertaining) then it will be much easier to get them back.

I suspect we might get a better crowd this Friday and, to get newbies and discretionary punters to come back, I just hope like hell the "Sydney" Nix turn-up.
He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)

You might want to have a talk with your poster people, I noticed posters on the bus shelters on Sunday morning advertising the Melbourne game already.  Can't have helped.

Your point about economic environment is fair and I think also there has been a surfeit of sport - started with the Olympics at the very start of the season and then last weekend there was rugby and league being thrown at us from all directions.  By Sunday evening the swaying/casual spectator didn't really need it any more.

Other codes are struggling as well - 11k for the semi final and less than 2/3 full for the final of our national game is not that flash.

Somehow need to re-generate this thing as uniquely ours and something to be proud of, and be part of.  A win this week will go an awful long way.  And maybe then the Fred factor will kick in.

Sunday games have really hurt us, especially the 5/6pm kick off. If we are wanting to get families along it needs to be an after noon game......probably never happen as the TV dictates everything, but seriously I hate the Sunday kickoffs it stuffs up the entire weekend......I'd much prefer a Friday or Saturday night game.

Friday and Sat at 7:30. Afternoon games are a pile of sh*t :)

But yeh it would be cool to have Daniel cruising round Wellington Juggling with a big blow-up Phoenix behind him. We've seen him before matches. Michael2008-11-26 10:43:33

i a bit different to everyone else i like the sunday games as we get back to wanganui about 10 pm compared to this friday where midnight is probably the earliest we will get home,i can see where everyone else is coming from but if you are into football and the phoenix and live in wellington you have really got no exuse for not getting to the rof for the games on any day of the weekend.

Considering how important families are to attendance figures (and promoting the sport in general) I'd say "It's a school night" is a pretty good excuse.

my youngest had a sleep over on the saturday night at a friends and had a whole 3 hours sleep...he was told to get some sleep before the game on sunday cos we weren't missing it just cos he was tired

WTF?

New TV ads; new radio ads, the week with the Phoenix competition  - there's a hell of a lot more marketing than in general for last season - OK we don't have the Galaxy this year to get folk excited - but I think there is more of an effort than last year.

When Hibs, went up, to win the Scottish Cup - I wisnae there - furfuxake!

You're not the problem, you give football the prioritisation it deserves Unfortunately some people considering school on Monday more important than football on Sunday. We know they're wrong, but changing their minds is a bit too difficult

The problem isn't promoting to those who'd show up anyway - as stated in previous threads, no need marketing to YF (this includes YF parents such as yourself). The problem is getting the average punter in. The current abundance of Sunday games is far from conducive to getting average punter parents/families to come along, and attendance is suffering (among many other factors )

Of course, there's nothing we can do about it now other than use it as a case to get decent match scheduling next season

I agree with Rob, the YF core will go to the games whenever they are played. That gets us to 5500 approx, however if we are wanting to attract 10000 to the game then I think a Friday evening or Saturday evening is better, personally if I was travelling to the games I'd rather get home late on Friday/Saturday knowing I had a day to sleep in, instead of getting home at 10ish on a Sunday and being tired for Monday.

I'm lost here, but it may be just me. I gathered the kids, got to the stadium by 5.40, watched the game, yelled, cursed and cheered with the rest, bought hot dogs and chips for a crap dinner, watched the second half and went home while it was still light. We walked in the door at 8.10, kids had quick shower and in bed.
So how is that bad for families? I have one and I don't get this argument (or excuse). Sure they might be in bed earlier on a regular Sunday but the Nix is less than once a week and we make a good time of it. They talk about it to their mates at school the next day

sunday night the traffic is almost non existent so the trip home is way quicker friday saturday more traffic chances for drunk drivers to take you out and usually would not be in bed by 10 pm any night of the week anyhow.i do not mind getting home late to much but my mates that usually come work saturday mornings so they are less likely to come,me though be at all games any day any time does not make to much of a difference friday, saturday or sunday.

Amazing coming from me but your mates don't have to drink to make getting into work the next day a problem, unless you are starting at 05:00 or 06:00. I've even gone on to a nightshift after a match, I just stayed on the soft drinks.

Also I commute a lot back on Friday nights and bad/drunk drivers are not that much more of a problem, normally mouthy drunk teens are the worst of it.

I always see it as a balancing act getting the crowds right. You have Friday nights = more after work people on the pop looking for a fun night = bigger crowd. With Sunday afternoon = more family-orientated = kids get into it, who are the future Yellow fever, more stuff spent on merchandise.

Wellington Phoenix is still not literally understood by a lot of Wellington people. When I say to people "I'm off to see Wellington Phoenix", I'm often asked "who are they?" or "Are you playing then?" ,(FFS I wish, you think Cov is slow? ), and I have to explain to several people what the club are about. Yellow Fever seems to have about the same or more name recognition than Wellington Phoenix does, which is not right.

It's like the club has not yet sunk into the Wellington Psyche.

Two points:

Firstly I think you need to stick a few adverts in the Women's Weekly mags. I'm amazed how much of this drivel I find lying around at work. Put a few pics of our best looking players in these mags, just in their underpants, you'll get more recognition, more women, (*sigh), turning up to the matches or letting their partners go, therefore bigger crowds.

Secondly  do our Pacific Island or Maori population identify with the team? I don't see the same diversity as I would at a Rugby match? How do you target these groups?

Turfmoore is also right about the impact of other sports. The Rugby League final win totally overshadowed our win this weekend, thats all people have been talking about, (still).

I think we as the hardcore support need to stop asking people "Are you going to the Phoenix game?' But instead ask "what would it take to get you to a Phoenix game?"

That's enough of my ramblings.

Dunno if many Maori or PI people identify with football at all, not just with the Phoenix. That's fairly obvious from the numbers from those groups who play the game locally, apart from the Fijian Indians maybe. Think that targetting them to get into the Nix might be a waste of time.

I'd agree that we have to look at why people aren't turning up and why the Nix seem to be a mystery to a large number of people. The strangest thing for me is that most of the people  I know who've been to a game and had never been to the footie before have loved it, so why aren't they coming back?

BTW, I hate Sunday games cos it means I've got to use up Annual Leave to take the Mondays off work.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Right now we need to get to the uninitiated, I like the idea of getting some of our boys into the womens mags, I'm sure daniel would be appealing enough. He loves wellington, his family is here would make a very good story I would have though. If a big crowd is what we are after then we need to giove the most people a chance to get there. At this point for most of the non-football crowd I'd wagert going after work on a Friday is easier than a sunday evening.

I've just heard that a couple of people we know, who are regulars in the Fever Zone will not make it due to work XMas parties!?  (TM I understand your valid reason).

FFS if we can't get our regualr people to go how the hell are we going to get anyone else to turn up?

Blimey it's really depressed me hearing that.
