I'd like to see us try a diamond formation one day, whether away to Melbourne is a good idea - probably not, but some time would be nice.

                    Paston
Siggy - McKain - Durante - Lochhead
                       Lia
Bertos                                   Daniel
                      Diego
                  Ifill - Greenacre

I think used in this formation would suit Diego best, I am sure he is a central attacking midfielder, not a wide one as used so far which would hinder his performances.

Siggy
Bertos
Chen

It's gonna be a long week for the kiwis this week, I feel Ricki will play Caceres due to the creativity  he can bring. Costa/Rojas will be unlucky not to make the bench this week.

This looks about right, although I'd maybe swap Bertos for one of Daniel / Hearfield.

Not 100% happy with Sigmund on the bench but worth a try with that back 4.

Bench of; Crowther, Hearfield, Caceras, Chen

He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)

they'll be still abit jet lagged from the wednesday game. they will play but they will only play half games whether they start or come off the bench.

If we push our guys too hard we will probably break them, I'd prefer to let them have lighter run this week and train hard for the Fury game.

Yeah but I think Manny has to come back from Malta. That's even further. But I do get what you are saying. That's a lot of travel for the Kiwi lads, but at the same time Leo HAS to play. He's our best player and looks capable of producing things the whole match. But other than that, it could be a chance to shift the squad round a bit.

is there no away area at the end of the ground now? are we going to have to go in that bit to the side?

You've selected General Admission areas.

You need to select Reserved Seating, Visitor Area.

But you don't want Home Supporter areas - right ?

Bottom left, Away Supporter Resv (Aisle 19).

I agree with this 100% except I would have McKain starting outright. My bench would be:

Crowther
Lia/Brown
Hearfield/Marco
Chen/Costa

id rather see post with subs being chosen e.g. 4 names., not a list of all of the bench players in the team haha

But thos are three pairs of similar players and one from each would make an ideal A-League bench IMO. 1 Defensive midfielder, an attacking midfielder/winger and a striker.
You know we belong together...

There is two sets of Home Fans/Supporter Groups, one at each end that sing to each other.

It will make sense when you get there, but the away supporters are always in that little triangle on the corner.

North and south end.
I was at Sydney v Melbourne at etihad with the cove.
And it Sounded great.

North end start.
We're north end, north end north end over here!
South reply.
We're south end. South end south end over here!

Melbourne fans are very impressive. When the game was a bit dim and if the cove weren't singing, I watched them.

At Olympic Park against the Knights in Season 2 the whole crowd got into it - North, East, South and West. Was pretty awesome.

No Danny Allsop - he's on his way to Qatar.

Fair enough.
31 years old, still enough time to make a name for himself overseas.

It seems to all be falling apart at melbourne, Celeski will be a big blow, I feel sorry for himStefan2009-09-08 20:40:20

Talk was Muscat might have been available last week, but they chose not to risk him so he may play, but I can't seem the dropping Leijer or Vargas and I'm not sure he has the legs for midfield anymore.  Maybe go with three and Kemp and Sukha get a more attacking brief.

How's my driving? - Whine here

Can't remember the stats now but Melb's win ratio without Muscat is pretty poor. I'd say it's near certain that Merrick will lever him into the starting line up somehow, even if it is in midfield and only for 65-70 minutes.

This is a real 'stop the rot' game for them without Celeski, Allsop, and with rumours about Thompson leaving. You need a hard nut player like Muscat to focus the team and raise their morale.

Anyway, if we're ever going to beat them on their home turf this might be the best opportunity we have for a while.

Rumours on Thompson to where?

You'd think he'd only go to try and force his way into the WC side, but really that's not going to happen so why leave?  He's shown that he's not good enough for big time footie overseas, he's well paid and liked, plus ACL coming up at the end of the season

Allsopp is a big loss, almost the perfect A-League level player, probably not the guy that Melbun would have expected to lose

Normo's coming home

I have no idea if there is any substance in them but the rumours were about cashed up Middle East clubs looking at Thompson. What is he now? 30-31? About the same age as Allsop I think. Just the time to think about a big money contract too.

Could be bollocks but even so, rumours are hardly what Melb need right now.

Fair enough stopout, understandable I guess.  It would be interesting to know whether these guys find that the grass isn't necessarily greener away from the A-League.  I know that a lot of the guys who headed to Asia (Korea, China and Japan) have moved on pretty quickly, you can have a pretty awesome lifestyle playing in the A-League which might be worth a bit in terms of the difference in salary

Also throw in the fact that Merrick hasn't signed a new contract and his deal is set to expire

hopefully this little distraction will put more media away from the fact that we are playing them this week and hopefully it will give us an edge. But with a few players here and there, I don't know if we have a really good chance?

Expect to see Bertos, Lochhead back in the starting lineup but don't know how many other AW players will start again. VERY interested to see Caceres and Chen

This is very true I think, I read somewhere that Jade North was not having that great a time over in Korea and was looking at a move to Europe... does anyone know how Sasa is going?

Allsopp is one of those guys who always seemed to score for Melbourne just when you were hoping the other team would do well - and he scored a bucketload of goals against us. That 4-2 game last year in the pouring rain... I still shudder thinking about that.

Tarek Elrich was first choice RB. Durante played in the middle throughout Newcastle's final campaign. Laybutt played in the middle ahead of Durante in a few games.

imo we will have a very good chance. We have never performed well at the TD but Melbourne are in a bit of a spin at the moment - Hernandez will be tired, Allsopp gone, Archie and the like unsettled, Celeski - their only other consistantly good creative midfielder - gone for the season. Celeski being out means that Brebner is on the field - and he is about 2 years past his best.
