Isn't the Asian Cup outside of international windows? So Euro-based Aussies might not be available? You'd think Burns would be in with a pretty good chance then

Pretty sure FIFA treats each confederation's championships like official windows. Even the Euros are technically outside of international windows.

Correct, the final squad misses 3 games. The HAL has a 2 week break during group stage, but if Strayya make the final players will miss a further 2 HAL games. That's wot I read at the weekend.

Actually for us, it would be 3 before and maybe one after. final is on the 31 Jan but our first game after the break in 2 Feb. So he'd probably miss that if they made the final.

I'd say Burns would be probably on the fringes of that 23 man squad. Looking at the list, there are definitely some other strikers/wide forwards whom Burns has arguably been playing better than, e.g. Bernie Ibini, Daniel de Silva, Tomi Juric, Nikita Rukavytsya. Then there's Josh Kennedy and Adam Taggart who might be better players than Burnsy but are coming off serious injuries (Taggart is still rehabbing from groin surgery).

Definitely some above him in the pecking order though: Cahill, Kruse, Leckie, Troisi probably  Vidosic. But he'll have a shot if he carries on his form this month.

Not sure about about Troisi and Vidosic even. Cahill, Kruse and Leckie definitely better. Burns is still not playing at full capacity and seems to have missed a lot of one on ones, but as it has been said I think he plays in a way that suits Ange's style. Ibini and Ruka he'd be competing with. Both of them quite handy players too.

Troisi is definitely rated higher at this point. Playing regularly in Belgium.

The next "Harry Kewell" is not a tag to be put on any player outside of Australia.
Do we need a Judas (based on his Leeds experience) or a player who sits on the injury list until a medal or cup looks likely (based on his Liverpool years)
Nathan Burns deserves better!

Harry "Sick Note" Kewell?

Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

Seasons only 10 minutes old but in 18 odd games time (plus finals and championship) Burns has 1year left on his contract. What do we do with him?

Same with R. Bon ??

Sign both to a further year. If Burns remains injury free then sign him to a further 2 year deal. His injuries may be because of the training he did previously. I appreciate he doesn't train at every session here. Remember last season we had loads of hamstring issues.

I have a suspicion that neither will stick around if they believe they have better options. Especially Roly

Do they have a magazine?

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Surely there's no way they can leave him out now is there?

Fastest player to ten goals (11 games) in a season in the history of the A league.

He can certain ask the question 'What more do I need to do'

Unfortunately for us, Ange can't ignore his form. If he does, then it would make the rest of his squad selection and commentary over the campaign when he picks someone 'because they are in form' very interesting.

Those 2 goals tonight have just made him a certainty for the Asian Cup.

Just gotta hope he doesn't get injured. I remember Ernie saying that they constantly monitor his injury situation and that he doesn't train everyday. Hope the stresses of the short turn arounds in the cup don't do any damage to his knee. Will be nice to have an Aussie to cheer on though in the matches.

Yeah I was wondering that too - you'd have to think that the Australian team would take into accounts our injury concerns and do the best for the player.

But Ange wants to play a certain way, and it takes time for a player to adjust. If he can't train everyday he might not be able to fit into the system.

Is Burnsy available for the post Christmas game if Ange names a squad.

I dont see him starting for the soceroos, will be in the squad. Think he will be a bench player behind the likes of Kruse, Leckie and Cahill

Chance for Boyd to get a run? Brockie is leaving and Kenny is not the same type of player.

Wouldn't actually mind seeing Boyd given a go, bet he's chomping at the bit.

It will be interesting to see if as an  inform player he gets a chance. Of course Ange knows him as he was his coach in the Australia U20's. some years ago.

I know Burns is keen as I saw the interview on TV yesterday. Good luck to him.

as much as I wouldn't like him to miss games, I hope he does make the squad.

There is a selfish element to this also. If he doesn't get picked it might confirm a "phoenix bias" where players don't see us as a good option as a club to play for if they want to further their Socceroo hopes.

Good on him! well deserved. Socceroos site says that they'll be in camp in Melbourne from Saturday 27th December. Jason Pine has said that Burns himself confirmed he'd only miss our games on the 31st of December and 4th of Jan, and will still be play for us on the 28th, but how does that work? Unless he's going to miss the first couple of days of camp.

I doubt he will be allowed to do that. Guess he will miss three games. Piney may have got something wrong!

Very pleased for him. Hope he will get on. There is a lack of goal scorers in the squad, after Cahill

Light it up young man. Run at them, jump over them, take it by the horns, it's what Ange expects no less.

They certainly need a goalscorer in that squad
