I tend to agree. The NZ u20 side showed quite a bit of
class so why not plunder those ranks.
I would like to see 15 or 16 Kiwis with strong foreign players
and Australians making up the numbers and to provide support for
those younger Kiwis in the team with talent but lacking
experience. Certainly there is no need to have anything but
Kiwi keepers.
The other side of the coin is that if a large number of the
squad are All-Whites then the Pheonix is going to be in a spot of
bother on FIFA dates. The FFA needs to have some flexibility
in the scheduling so that teams like the Pheonix can field many
internationals and play an extra A-League game during the week to
catch up. At the moment it is a risk that the club will have
to manage and may influence the desire of the club to call
back a number of All-whites who are playing abroad.

If we start brining in 5 or 6 U20's then theyll all be forced to
see little or no action in the early stages of the campaign. I say
we establish ourselfves as a club, then worry about developing
and/or bringing in NZ talent. Im all for NZ talent but is their
enough and are those who are good enough willing to play for
us!!???

Dont no how anyone can say Steve Old isnt worth getting hold of, 21
years of age, motivated, fit and down to earth. Only just
completing his first year of pro football to add to a pretty
awesome football CV. Playing alongside guys like Okon for the last
year means he knows what it takes to become quality and for NZ
football to go forward hes a must.
If he isnt signed or part of this franchise ill eat my
jandals.

If the Phoenix are going to struggle (and I suspect they might) I
would rather support a solid core of young kiwi players struggling
than what we had at the Knights, (English hacks and Aussie
cast-offs) a team which were worse than struggling most of the
time...honestly sometimes they were unwatchable.
I want to support young guys like Old and Brockie and
Barbarouses, etc. I can't wait to see Covs put on a jersey and play
in Welly again. That is the kind of team I want to support, and
that I will go along to watch.

If we're talking about either,
A: Winning the league, or
B: Coming last in the league
As our only two possible options then what you're
saying makes sense.
However, we don't have to view things in that dichotomous
manner, which seems typical of NZ sports fans (look at the crap the
cricketers got for finishing in the top four at the world cup) . I
would like to see the Phoenix be competitive on the whole, and
finish mid table in the first season.
I think a mix of import and local, veteran and young
players is a sound approach.

Hello p_style.... it has taken a while, but I'm all registered :)
Kiwi content definitely floats my boat & I'm another
advocate for giving some of the younger dudes a run - Old has the
world ahead of him, we should make the most of it.
And whoever mentioned Smith & Wilson was onto something...
both would be worthwhile acquisitions.
it'd be good for the phoenix to build with & great for
them to play in this league.
Smith should be definitely be considered - we need
quality strikers, he dominated his league in the US...

new zealanders that watch sport half the time are on the 'i'll go
to a game if theyre winning' approach. this is why 70/30 new
zealand team would not work in version 3. you can be as passionate
as you want about wanting to have nz'ers in the team but at the end
of the day the talent is not here...there is a reason why nz has
only been at the world cup once. sure passion and pride would be on
the line if we had more nz'ers than imports but we'd end up near
the bottom of the table.
a core of strong players no matter what nationality is what we
need (and i think we are half way there) youngsters should be given
a chance ofcourse but they have to have x-factor. if theyre not
amazing in the nzfc what makes you think theyd be amazing in the
a-league if given a chance?
the level in the a-league will increase each year we cant
expect to sign mediocre kiwis just because they kiwi.

I think Steven Old's game has suffered a bit from him being dropped
in the deep end and having huge expectation weigh him down. I mean,
he was touted as the future of the AWs only a year or so back and
he was never going to live up to all of that so early in his
career. He seems to have lost confidence but he obviously has the
raw material there to be an international class player one day
soon. I'd say he'd be a great signing for Phoenix and he'd probably
come quite cheap too.

I think Simon Elliott would be worthwhile and getable. He's
been injured at Fulham all season and if fit would be a good
marquee player.

I think that people are thinking too small.....I can't remember the
exact limit on the size of the squad but I think that it is
somewhere near 30.... now why can't half of that be made up of good
young NZ talent?? and what about a wider training group like what
the warriors do... I think that ever since they stopped trying to
bring in old hacks from AUS they have been brining through some
good young talent.... just because you put a young player on the
wider team doesn't mean they will always get to play... they first
prove they can compete in training and then go from there.

Can I just say, how can anyone that has seen che bunce play think
he is a good footballer? really are we kidding ourselves here,
lockhead another average footballer?? can i ask why we keep
bringing up these names Brockie, Hay, Bunce and other crap
footballers that aren't up to it, you just have to watch bunce
playing for the knights last year, never goal side always lacking
in pace, the A-league has fantastic players, its not like the crap
leagues like champs premier and central league where you make a
mistake and are never really punished for it, this is top level
football.
yes, as i was saying, i think now we should be smart enough and man enough to admit that the likes of bunce (as with hickey, van steeden, and so many nz players before them) simply aren't good enough for this level of football, despite how much they might "want it".
at least hay is a classy player, it's just that his head isn't screwed on right. and we all know that brockie is at least young and has shown class- he wouldn't have been signed (or even looked at) by sydney otherwise. he definately deserves a chance.
Che Bunce showed enough at the end of last year to be picked
up by Coventry. Sure, he hasn't had much of a time of it over
there but let's put that in perspective against a guy like Steven
Old. Potential is one thing but at some time you have to
start realising that potential. Steven Old has never had a
"great" game in the A-League, he has never had a "great" game for
the all whites so what has he actually done? I'm not saying
don't sign him, but let's stop banging on about potential, we still
need a team thats going to go out on the park and win football
games in the A-League. Che Bunce did that last year, he may
not have "potential", but he has been there and done it. That
says a lot for me.

Mully - Promoted to the Championship with Sc**thorpe. Unlikely to come home.
Coveny - Offered a contract, negotiating now. Highly Likely.
Elliott - Conservatively he's probably pulling in at least $600k at Fulham. It would be a big call to turn your back on that for another twelve months. Plus it would be a big call to ask Terry to stump up competitive wages when he's already putting over $1.2m in to the club. He's a generous man, but the marquee talk may be a bridge to far this season.
Ivan - A good chance if no one else in Holland chases him. Salary could be an issue but he may be a cheaper marquee option.
Moses Petelo - Like the lad but I suspect that apart from Costa the youngsters are likely to come from the U-20 squad rather than the U-17's. More likely Brockie, Jenkins, Pelter, Boxall, Peverley, Roddy Brown... Give Petelo a year or two and I suspect he'll be in the frame.

on another note, i really dont think Elliot will come home in the next 12 months, even if Fulham cut him loose im sure there'll be better options around for him (Financially)

I haven't liked the way Utting treats his defenders - there's a way
to order people around, without be-littling them.
I've also seen him make some fairly ordinary misses, e.g., in
game against Auck City earlier in NZFC.
However, I have to say he made numerous sensational saves
against Fiji's Ba last weekend - the best I've seen him in recent
times. Waitakere would not be off to play Japan's best club
without him. If that game was his swan-song, what a way to go
out!

spotted Campbell Banks as a bar-extra cum potential philanderer.
Not sure that he had any lines though (they'd've had to pay him
more, I suspect).
Anyway, I put down Daniel Koprivcic as a left-field pick for
the Nix, but it doesn't look likely to happen. Shame, i reckon he'd

Campbell Banks is playing in the Victorian Premier League. He is a

Judging by most of the Players already signed by the Phoenix I
think they are looking to play a fast game out on the flanks...So
the next kiwi signings I think would ave to fit into that or be
safe players that can come on with 20 minutes to go and control a
the ball and kill opponents attacking plays.....
On a side note I think that is what Sydeny FC need....THey are
full out attacking in the first 60 minutes but they let themselves
down on the last half hour or so..If Phoenix do adopt a fast pace
attacking game which I think they will, then more safe and
defensive minded players are needed....Don't know much about
players NZ living here in Australia and all but I think those are
the kinda players needed.
