No leaks to the Aussie media, so cannot be asking for any money from the Fox Sports Marquee fund this time.

I heard a rumour might have been here that we had one all but signed but they got injured before signing so dodged a bullet but when you are that far down the track you kinda gotta start again and go back grovelling to the guys you said yea na to on your short list earlier cause you thought you had someone signed so cant be a quick process

What are peoples thoughts about Lewis? Seems like we are well covered in midfield so i'm surprised to see him considered. Is a classy player though and would add a bit.

It's a question of cost vs need. Depends on how cheaply we could get him for I guess.

We have 3 roster spots spare, its the budget that is limiting us rather than anything else.

Are there pressures on our budget? I agree though, if there's an opportunity for a good player, we should go for it.

Last year we dumped players as well to make room, that worked out ok but it's not clear what we had to pay to get them off the books. Always good to have one or two spots free I think

He could be very keen to sign on for cheap with his partner now working back in NZ. Sign him for 2 or 3 years. I imagine if he doesn't get much first team time should still be able to play with the weenix, which is more game time than he is getting now. Would require getting a release from his club.

Though, could see him ending up in Akl for the season.

Pretty sure if you terminate someone's contract, that sum still goes against your cap so agree it's a better idea to keep a spot or two open than to fill them and having to pay for those costs twice...

If its mutual termination then, as far as I'm aware, only the agreed upon amount goes against the cap (which could be $0).

Another article linking Berisha to a return to the A-League - didn't realise his release from Japan had been confirmed.

If we pulled off a signing like him for this upcoming season, I'd be ecstatic. We'd finally have someone who could take penalties!

Has only had a handful of appearances in total and mostly has struggled to make the bench in a team that is second bottom of league two. Hasn’t figured at all this season.

He can't make the bench because he's been out with injury for the whole season, and was a starter at the end of last campaign with fans saying he'll be one of the focuses in a team rebuild

Scodhorpe are 2nd last, and so seemingly motivated to have their full squad available. He’s fit enough to play for NZU23s, and Iron have released him to come down under where he will miss about 6-8 League Two Games.

His partner has moved back to NZ. Nix bought him in for a look when they were in Sydney.

All points to a guy looking at the A League now, and his English club prepared to let him go.

I would rather put the time into developing Waine and McCowatt than bringing in a 34 yr old striker that hasn't scored in 18 months. He barely played in Japan cuz they didn't like his attitude.

Nice to have an experienced A league striker in the squad, counter argument

We just have no idea whether those guys are ever going to develop into A-League quality players.  I 100% agree with giving them a prominent position in the squad and allowing them to stake a claim, but I'm not convinced we should rely on Ben Waine because he's banging them in against low level opponents in pre-season

From "Stuff" there's an article on Berisha but this quote made me laugh.....

But there is no room left on the Victory roster for a forward like him, with the club boasting an embarrassment of riches with Andrew Nabbout, Robbie Kruse and Ola Toivonen all filling the frontline already..."

Kruse is NOT an embarrassment of riches, just an embarrassment with his off the field antics. Ask Roar fans. On the field he's not that good either.

Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

I'm not saying Waine or McCowatt are the answer to our goal scoring problems. I'm saying that Berisha would be a poor signing, so giving them the playing time will have more upside in the long term than signing him to be a 3rd choice striker. He looked very much on the decline at the end of his Victory stint, has barely played in the last 18 months and will want high wages to sign for someone. That doesn't scream 'must have' to me.

Why would the NIX sign him. Given all the talk it is about the person first, then player, I can not see us signing a guy who has not been picked largely on the basis of his attitude.

surly you guys are having a laugh not wanting berisha as much of a cock he is.  The guy isnt even an import means a proven a league striker with an import slot available still.   Yes he's barely played there last 18 month's but get him fit and you know what you will get out of him.   Will be good for waine and mcowatt to learn off.  Getting him the club can then look for another import defender mid season or another play maker.   This is a big no brainer

Wouldn't touch him with a 10 foot pole. Still a prick and so far past his best he isn't worth paying any money to. Let's get the import striker we need then see what gaps are needing to be filled - Clayton Lewis would be nice, and maybe Berisha at that point if he's heap to add depth and competition but if we sign him as our mian goalscorer I can see us winning the spoon.

berisha never had an a-league season where he scored less than 10, the most recent of which finished just 18 months ago - a prick to play against sure, but he’s absolutely a character, who to me seemed well liked by the victory/roar fans. reckon taking him would be a no brainer considering he’s not an import/I’m imagining slightly cheaper at 34. let’s make him OUR prick.

Hasn't scored a goal in 18 months. 18 months is a long time in football when you're 34.

He's not even close to being the player we need.

For me it really depends on how much he costs and what role he's willing to accept. If he is happy being an option off the bench and not seeking huge money I'd take him for the experience and sheer will to win, but I wouldn't want to pay a lot for him to be a starter when there are genuine questions about whether he's still capable of even 80% of what he was
