Do you know who we're looking at? Some clues would be great...

i genuinely can't say because I'll get people in trouble. He's 31 though, and South American

Is he signed, or are we looking at him?

Negotiating a contract. Sounds pretty advanced but you never know, it could fall through. I really can't say anything else though

Could be talking a loan deal of course.

Wouldn't be a bad thing this close to season start.

Isn't this player from Chile? If so this is all Chilean strikers aged 31 playing in a South American league

Well, if the player in question is a target man, Varas is the only one on that list taller than 1.80m (he's 1.85m).

That 31, is someone just checking year of birth and the player is yet to turn 31 this year?

Keirrison?

The rumour doing the rounds is that the player is Chilean.

Hopefully we can get this player across the line soon. Also Philip Rollo reporting Wellington Phoenix's match against Team Wellington will take place at Westpac Stadium on October 6, same day as their community day. Understand the Victory game will be this week.

Just because I love a good rumour I have compiled a list of all current free agent South American strikers who are 31.

Doesn't need to be a free agent, could be someone that has fallen out of favour at his club. This close to the start of the season, it would make more sense to get someone that's been involved in a clubs preseason.

Pepe, Jair, Paulisa, Sergipano, M Neves, Zarate, Murillo, Macan, Ze Love, Fiorina, Fernandez, Laborde, Esquida, Fagner....

Not much in the free agent pool from Chile, but I guess he could be a current.

I wonder if we were looking at Adriano before he got injured.

Last rumored import striker was supposed to be english so don't think it was Adriano.

Those Chilean center forwards all look like risky signings to me.

Not sure where the Chilean rumour came from though. South American.... Someone Bobo-ish please.

That was from an agent spruiking a player. Not from the club. I don't believe they have been talking to any Englishmen.

Don't forget that while there have been South American flops in the A-League, some of the best ever have come straight from leagues in South or Central America - Fornaroli came out of the Uruguayan league, Henrique, Finkler, Cassio and Bobo all came from Brazilian leagues, Carrusca from an Argentine club and Carlos Hernandez from a Costa Rican club. I'm not saying I think this guy will be Bobo level, but there's a crazy amount of talent on that continent and from what I've seen he could be pretty solid. I'm told he doesn't have a typically arrogant South American ego too, which is good. There should be some noise about it with his "current" club soon. Unless it falls through I think we're looking at a Nix announcement next week.

If the Chilean rumor is correct then best bet has to be Sebastián Varas  ??

His team have had a bad run of results and he's been out of the squad for the last few games. Probably out of favour and keen on a move.

I think it was a subtle one relating to the use of the word "long", but I only realised that latte in the piece

Anyway, can't wait to sign this new South Americano striker. Hopefully he's ready to plunge right into first team football

I know a Chilean on loan in Italy that I'd be happy for the Nix to take ... Wage demands might be a stumbling block.

Pretty sure United would foot the entire bill so long as he ended up further away from the rest of the team!
