yeah it often feels like we get the ball in a wide area, behind the oppostion defense, and then realise we dotn know what to do with it.

Its like our goal is to get it wide, rather than get our strikers on the ball in the middle.

The solution is pretty simple, but takes a big change of mentality. When you get the ball in these wide areas, your attacking midfielders and other wide support need to offer short passes to get the ball onto the edge or inside the box. Watched Rorar last night, and pretty much thats all they do.

Or alternatively, the winger needs to back himself and cut inside. Fenton & Boyd do seem to do this

exactly. It's what most teams do. Not helped that we aint great crossers and aint great with the ball in the air into the box (to a single players).

I think that tactic would be very effective tonight against a hugely inexperienced Heart backline, and much more effective than trying to beat them in the air.

I'd play the salt shaker alongside the pepper mill and get the tomato sauce bottle a little further foward and...  *best to stop now*

Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

We had three great opportunities last week to pull the ball back from a wide run to the goal line in the box, back to an unmarked player at the top of the box.  Not one of those plays was made.  every.single.time we tried an aerial ball accross the six yard box, or a shot into the side netting.  Either that or an aerial cross to the far corner flag. :)

Hopefully the comment that we-are-practicing-crosses is the fake media designed to make the obviously better pull back option a surprise .....

I have brother and sister in law, nephews and my own family pinned down for watching this tonight, but from afar on sunny holiday

Yeah I probably wouldnt bother if it meant a 2.5hour drive and work the next morning. For me its a 20min drive to the ROF on a night that id otherwise be doing nothing but watching tv, and then back around 10pm. More time on the weekend now to do other things too

cutting it back to the edge of the box is good..if we get players streaming forward from midfield aka Tim Brown.  We must try and make it numbers game by getting more players forward when we go down the flanks.  It would be good to outnumber Hearts on attack..ie 6 on 4.

Must admit my heart sank when I heard they had been practicing crosses.....crossing to whom? we have the shortest group of attackers in the A-League. We have no one with any pretensions of heading ability. So WTF?

I am afraid the game plan from Ricki will be...."they have a couple of inexperianced CB's so just keep whacking the ball in and see what scraps we can pick up". If we start pumping high crosses I swear to God I will eat my season pass.!!!

Everyone in this forum has outlined what we need to do. Fenton and Boyd are good at getting in behind defenses. They need to vary it up by drilling the ball across the face of goal low and hard and have runners come in at the near post for deflections into goal or they need to  cut it back to the edge to pick up guys like Sanchez and others coming into the box. Above all they need to have patience. If they are wide and there is no obvious pass on then don't just always lob it into the mixer...use that only occasionally for variation. They also need to get into attacking situations faster....we tend to build up slow and by then the opposition defenders are set in numbers.

If we are going to base our game around short passes around the box I would prefer Stein there to Brockie....Stein looks to have the skill set to play that sort of game. Brockie scores wondergoals but goes missing for large parts of every game.

We should win this game...but then I thought the same about the Sydney game.

Because the consensus of this forum could run a football team better than Ricki. Right? ;-)

Also, I never said anything along those lines. I don't know jack about tactics that don't involve the goalkeeper.

FYI people - dont bother driving in for the 13th or 27th - the car park will be full well before the game even starts. The citys back to work and everyone jumps at the reduced all day parking. Same thing happened earlier this year with $15 parking

On Sundays?  I think we had a mid week at the beginning of the year which meant that lots of workers filled up the spaces.

I think it was $10 parking last season.

I agree about the first two points, but we don't do mexican waves (unless it's playoff game and we've got x number of band wagon jumpers).  I'm not sure it will help boost crowd figure though.  Maybe wellington will surprise me.  Fingers crossed.

Overcast, no rain, not overly cold but not warm either. I guess you could describe it as 'average'.

I'm just wondering what combination of ignorance and arrogance would lead someone to make that statement. Because if you really mean it, then it's criminal negligence of you not to have sent your CV to Gareth yet.

If bouncy castles don't work then we might as well give Mexican waves a go.

Sure beats gringo apathy.
