I like re-reading this thread. Very proud of the boys. And we're not bottom of the table.

In the NZ NBL Casey Frank is the actual commentator, but also plays for Auckland
True! and he does a good job of it too Casey. He isn't an NBL player however... I just think its a bit wrong for a player of a different team to add their two cents worth on a team they will play again this year. Best to focus on your own and let the rest do their own.

Last I saw Casey Franks he had just won the NZ NBL title with the Wellington Saints this year.

I don't mind our approach as they are obviously a far better side. But I do wonder how in a salary cap league it is possible to get to the point that one side is so demonstrably superior to the other, and that one side can so completey dominate territory and possession, and attempts on goal.

How did Brisbane demonstrate their superiority? By drawing at home against a side ravaged by injury? Territory, possession, and attempts at goal are just statistics: superiority comes down to the result.

Oh, is that how it works? I'm still trying to figure out if goals win football matches.

A popular misconception. Actually, you score goals by winning.

The difference Marius is style and content. If we had Ange, would we play arching balls in the area? Would Brisbane play that way if they had Ricki?I hate to say it but I think coaching has a little to do with it... and resembling a M*A*S*H unit.I'll also add in discipline in too many dumb fouls and cards. We gift them away.

Coaching has a lot to do with it, but I don't agree that we would be as good as the Roar if we had Ange. Up until now half the forum have been bagging Ricki. The truth is that we don't have the quality players that the Roar have.If you want to disagree, watch the game again. They are sharper, quicker, better technically and appear to understand the game better.73% possesion just about sums it up.
If Ricki moved to the Roar tomorrow, they would still be the best team in the league.
If we are serious about winning the league then we need to get the players that are good enough, because if we are being honest then we have no chance with the ones we have got.
Tonights performance was fantastic, not because we were good, but we stuck to the job.
Agree and I made a point as such to the lack of quality we have in another thread a few days back. For me the coaching is a bit inflexible. There is a trend shift in the modern game to smaller quicker players with a better touch - basically the Roar team and you cannot deny that they are bloody good. As mentioned on this thread by a few people, they do not speand anywhere near as much time on the ball as our guys and its all one touch pass and move. Our guys do not stack up to that style. If I was recreating this team to play a Roar style, I would probably only keep Dura, Manny, Lochhead and perhaps Sanchez and Ward. Ifill likes to have the ball at his feet and take players on. Good player but would not fit in that style of system similar to what the Roar play.

I think we are on the same wavelength, but on the fine tuneing we may disagree.Locky just keeps giving the ball away and can't defend(have a look and see how many times in the second half the wide player was unmarked)Ward lately has been poor-but I have rated him in the past.
The sad thing is that some people will assume that you are not a real Nix supporter if you don't praise them every week.NZ football has come a long way since the Nix arrived on the scene and I for one don't just want us to make up the numbers. To that effect, we will have to get rid of more than 50% of our players if we are to win the league etc.

If you are old and wise you were probably young and stupid

Ward should still not be allowed in our defensive third - he tries dribbling the ball out and gets done.

Ward was guilty of this a few times in the first half but thankfully as the game went on he cut this out. Not really my favourite player because of just that weakness in his game you describe, but I thought he defended and covered very well overall.

Lampard's position is not, "Spain demonstrated that they are the best side in the world by losing to England." While I appreciate that you might want to drag others down to your level, most people just can't stoop that far.

Really, I'm impressed.

he has done it from his first game at the nix. he is a safer bet as a winger or attacking mid.

Was really impressed with Ward's overall defending though - not exactly renowned for it but put in some great tackles.

Absolutely, he single handedly lost us a couple of games last season cos of this glaring weakiness.
His giving the ball away in our final third is as predictable as "pass-back" Brown pass it backwards. The clue's in his name there.
But Ward does create, so should be starting on the wing ahead of Bertos.
Or if someone can beat Wards silly "creative" play in stupid positions out of him, he could do a decent job in the midfield.

Agreed, we don't want Ward in the defending third any more than is strictly necessary, but he did make a good fist of it tonight considering the circumstances and gameplan.

The coaching style is a bit like the Nix approach to Movember really: rather one dimensional, bordering on dirty, and drooping down the sides.HarryHotspur2011-11-13 23:57:27

So, sort of like how Broich doesn't fit into the Roar side seeing as he's a similar type of player?

I didn't see any evidence of that tonight.

I can guarantee that when Ifill has the ball I will yell at him more than a few times to pass it. The league remembered last year that in his 1st year he likes to cut back a lot and was a lot less effective. You yourself have also pointed this out...

Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwesome!

with Daniel and Greenie up front we're a counter attacking team. Figuredit out.

and three much maligned players: great ball from Leo, super touch from Ward- and we all saw it he passssed the ball!, and cool finish from Timmeh, but that's not really unexpected, great positioning too as always.

Think the fouls were necessary, had to break up their momentum. Was really impressed with our discipline and shape. Siggie and Dura were immense and I ddin't notice Griffith after he came on so he must be benefitting from Ricki's couching.

I'm not sure if there is a trend to be honest. A lot of teams would love to be like Barcelona (or Brisbane) but the reality seems to be that there just aren't enough of those types of players around. You need an entire team full of quick, smaller, good touch players to be able to base a game plan around it. Arsenal, despite considerable resources, is an example of this going wrong and they have started winning again now they're playing more traditional football.

For all the Roar's passing and movement, they did look a bit lost when it came to actually creating variation in scoring opportunities. 9 times out of 10 what ended up happening was a through ball to an overlap run into the 18 yard box on the right hand side, followed by a cut back or cross in front of the goal mouth back along the ground. Great to watch if a team can pull it off, but easy to defend against if you pull the same move over and over again. They have players that can shoot and players that can attach to the end of crosses (which you only see during set pieces) I think Brisbane just need to mix it up a bit more.

Love how our goal came from the three players most ripped on players in these forums, Brown, Bertos and Ward combining to score the classiest goal we've managed all season. lol
Well done boys, if there is ever a time a when you win a draw it was last night.
Terrible injury situation though, any word on Sanchez? Also was Daniel and Siggy just cramp or should be worried?

We were pretty lucky. We defended well (based solely on the scorecard), but also the Roar finishing was woeful and had to golden chances in front which they squandered.

To me, the game showed more about the gap between where we are at and the style we play than anything else.

If your best 2 - 3 players are your goalkeeper, CB and RB then you weren't competing, you were simply surviving and that shouldn't be considered good enough in a salary capped league.

Happy with the point, happy with how the boys battled... but not happy with where the season looks to be heading.

Ok, Adelaide lost 7-1 to Brisbane and probably are in the top 3 spenders in the league and we were pragmatic and drew and we are one of the lowest, if not the lowest, spenders in the league and that doesn't take into account our lengthy injury list.

Rickie should hire himself out as "Mr Park the Bus". He is so good at defensive organisation. I guess he has lots of practice with the AW's.

All we need now is For Greenie to work some attacking coaching magic plus get Ifill back and in form then we are sweet. I liked Greenies comments early last week about getting more ball to Sanchez.

The league is very compact....even though we lost three on the trot we are not out of it....we just need to get our A team on deck most weeks and the results will come.
