Only way to get goals past GCU will be to have alot of attacking options. GCU defense has been leaking recently so we will have to exploit that. I have a lot of faith in our defense after the last 4 games. We can beat these guys. the more options open, the more oportunity to score.

What do you think?
I know, Mulli on the bench...I just think it's stupid not to have a single defender on the bench.
Surely Mulli will do better than Party-boy-Hearfield if he's called upon for defensive duty.

Happy with that, would like to see Caceres and maybe Chen on the bench.

Whoever put togther that GCU/Judas mock-up on the homepage, top marks, it's priceless.

I'd keep a largely unchanged starting lineup, just Daniel to replace Caceres. That pesky law of averages suggests GCU wont get knocked over three times in a row, but I hope we take the game to them. A conservative mindset is surely doomed to failure.

You could also argue that psychologically they (GCU) have lost their mojo after a draw and two losses and that the time is right for the lads to pluck victory from the jaws of a draw.Junior822009-09-28 23:46:26

I'd ring Ryan Nelsen and ask if he wants a guest stint as a striker after the quality finishes he landed against El-Hadji Diouf over the weekend!

It will be a game of our great defense against their great attack and our crap attack against their shiite defense.

So it will be tough to keep them from scoring with their classy attack....we just have to find away to get the ball in the back of the net. I'm picking another 1-1 draw.

+1 Although I spent a minute or so trying to work out what Wynton Rufer was doing in it before the penny dropped.

Not bad, but it's a bit too defensive for my liking, especially with a keeper in the line-up. I'd drop Paston and give Costa a free role behind the front four. That way we could have 5 in the box at all times, and goals will just keep flying in.

Muscat was arguably the MOM and the only one of the back 4 who could complete a pass against CCM and you've got him on the bench? Hearfield gets a start based on what? Lia got through as much defensive work as Brown and did a hell of a lot more with the ball but no room for him? You'd need a traffic controller down theleft hand side with Berots/Rojas and Daniel all drifting there naturally. Has the look of a fairly random selection about it.

It's horses for course really.  I agree with you that manny played well in the weekend but with a back 3 that includes a sweeper then you really won't the other two to hold the central channels.  therefore Siggy gets the nod.

Fair call re Hearfield.  I'd be confortable with Macro going to right mind, Costa up front and Hearfield on the bench.

no we don't.

we play Greenacre up front by himself with Ifill, Bertos joining him on attack.

but you see - IT DOES NOT WORK !!!!!!!!!!

Greenacre is ALWAYS isolated.

he needs someone with him (Ifill) at ALL TIMES !

I'll say it for you.

If we play Ifill as a an out and out striker, he can't run around the middle and create for himself.

Take away your most creative player by sticking him next to Greenie and our attack is blunted

This is the problem though, he's having to do everything by himself! Creating the chances for himself because there's nobody there to get on the end of crosses / passes.

He's scored 2 goals through crosses TO him so it's clear he might be even more useful in the box on the end of things than he is sending the ball in there (to nobody).

In any case, as I've said, it doesn't HAVE to be him who moves up front.

However, you can all rest assured that the same formation will be trotted out again, so there's no point in even debating it.

It wont stop cos its broke and it cant/wont be fixed

Because Ifill is needed in mid and actually plays there despite our "3 up front" sh*te we only have one up front..and its not working.  We get all these great overlapping runs out wide and a cross in..ift gets in and there is only 1 little man to cover the whole of the 18 yard box..when he admits he is a 6 yard box poacher.  Now I know we aint an EPL team but watching last nites highligts and seeing how many times they have 4/5 or 6 players in the 18 yard box before the cross comes over from general play indicates to me that our level of fitness aint enough to track up in numbers and track back to defend.  Or we dont push enough up even from defence and play more in their half not ours...So lets get another striker and keep 2 upfront and it may come right.

I don't think you're giving Leo, Brown, Daniel or a few others credit for the amount of time they get forward into the area. Many are making out that Greenacre is on his own when a cross comes in. Not true Royal2009-09-29 12:54:15

the way we line up is, as most have pointed out not hw we end up playing, we line up as 4-3-3, but then we wend up playing in a 4-2-3-1 formation with ifill, daniel/caceras and bertos playing as attacking mids, which leaves poor little greenacre to look for hideously out of reach bombs, nothing along the ground to him, no deflections for him to get.....he needs a strike partner, whether it be Ifill or costa or chen, preferably someone with some height.

There was one time in that match where we only had one in the box (and sadly it was a perfect back post cross from Lochhead).  I can't think of another crossing opportunity where we didn't have at least 3.

Most of the time it is Ifill on the end of a Lochy or Leo cross anyway, so he's in front of goal when needed

I think we just play too deep in general. I can hardly think of any occasion other than maybe if we have a corner where the defence is pushed up to halfway. The gaps between striker(s), midfield and defence just always seems too great.

i hate to say this but I agree with you steve-o, but how do you fix that??? the formation isn'y really gonna solve it, it has to come from the players being told to push forawrd.

I'm really not sure...of course my own view is that it's down to the manager and tactics, others may have a different idea.

I just noticed it when I was watching the Hibs highlights on the net at the weekend, when Hibs were pushing forward there just seemed to be FAR more bodies up there going forward and ahead of the ball in and around the box. For example a midfielder would have it about 40 yards from goal, and 4 or 5 players would be ahead of him looking for the pass - could you honestly say that's the case with Phoenix? Comparing it to the Phoenix game that I watched earlier in the day was literally like night and day.

Proof if ever there was some that we don't have to play like Man Utd / Barcelona to play this way.

I think most of the players are just too slow to get forward basically, or they are told not to go forward, at the same time anyway.

who knows, it could just be the way the players play the game, they prefer to hang back and play what's in front of them.....I'd like to see a few more push forward but if that hurts us defensively then I'd be more concerned.

It's time we started throwing caution to the wind a bit though, wins are becoming essential.

Might need to re-locate to Dunedin then - and they don't have a stadium yet.

as noted earlier Im all for pushing up more and attempting to play more in the opposition half..might get congested but at least it wil get more bodies into the 18 yard area.

Yup, other than the last game we have looked pretty good on attack. if we had another good goalscorer in the team we would have won at least two of those drawen games.

In fact, Raumati Hearts failed as a club because they picked the wrong Edinburgh team and subsequently played too defensive.
