Sydney FC v Wellington Phoenix, Sunday 5pm (EST), Sydney Football Stadium, Sydney
The Adjudicator says: "Wellington are fast becoming the team that no one wants to play. Its the old David v Goliath mentality that Australian A-League clubs should always defeat their Kiwi rival who have a modest roster at best. Maybe this has been a motivating factor for Wellington who have performed above expectation already this season. Its like the goalkeeper in juniors who wants to play on the field but is forever enslaved to an 18-yard-box because he isnt one of the cool kids. The boy decides he may as well get use to it, and goes on to become a top-line keeper. Am I the boy in the story? No. Am I saying the Phoenix can win the comp? No. But I think theyll sneak a draw here. 1-1 draw."

Phoenix fan Steve Corry of Beijing says: "Dear Mr Adjudicator, What do you mean 'modest' player roster for Wellington? Have you checked Ifill and Greenacre's experience and credentials and compared with the likes of Joel Porter and Owusu? While unbeaten, Sydney have hardly set the world alight in the first three rounds and looked pretty average last week. Wellington on the other hand took it to Brisbane for 3/4 of last week's game. They are on an upward swing and if they keep it up could roll Sydney. By the way last season's results for these two teams were two wins to Wellington and one to Sydney. Hmmm....
Wellington 2 - Sydney FC 1."

Sky Blues fan Adam says: "Mr Adjudicator, Sydney fc at home, who have had a solid start to the season and are playing some good football in patches will beat wellington in a close one, wellington have been a suprise package so far but will not be able to keep it up. 2-1 to Sydney"

A real ref !!

Delovski was quite terrible at one of the Melbourne home games I went to. I was suprised because I usually think that he is the best in the league by some distance. I think he's been in the FFA ref system for too long.

I think we agree that Ferrante is not quite up to the mark as mCains partner in midfield.
I was recently reading a blog from an Adelaide supporter and he wondered why Diego was not considered to play as a deep midfielder for the Phoenix. The guy said he often played very well there for Adelaide.

mcain does the ball winning stuff in mid and then Diego could do the slick passing stuff....could be worth a try. It would also free up a spot further up for Troy/Daniel.....both wide players I admit.
Diego would have to do the defensive stuff too but he must have been OK  for adelaide to keep playing him there.

One player who would have done that job very well, and was probably available, was Simon Elliot.....he was great at Con Cup....now he's warming the bench in the USA. Even at his age I reckon he still had two seasons of A-League in him.

I hope he means 'modest' in terms of numbers, because in terms of quality, I'm not sure any other teams are THAT much better. Certainly not 'David vs Goliath'!

Wouldn't it have been safer to sign someone like Jimbo Bannatyne for a week, just in case? Rather than potentially having a 40+ year old having to come on?el grapadura2009-08-28 12:54:25

Is there anything stopping a reserve "goal keeper" substituting an outfield player?

Obviously an injured GK has to be replaced by the reserve GK but do the rules stop the reserve GK coming onto the field for an outfield player?

NZ TAB Half/Full Syd/Wgtn paying $40 ... tempting

or a take two head to heads, on both a draw ($3.60) and Phoenix win ($5.50) on the Aus TAB gives a good net payout on everything but a Sydney win

In other news, talented youngster Marco Rojas will travel with an extended squad to Sydney. The 17-year-old midfielder has impressed Herbert since joining the club and his addition to the squad takes him big step closer toward realising his dream of turning out for the Phoenix in a Hyundai A-League match.

Last para =  they don't like it up em.  I'm looking forward to our front 5 harrassing the sh*t out of them all game.

SYDNEY FC say last week's long ball football was a blip and they promise to return to a more technical style of game for Sunday's clash with Wellington Phoenix.

Speaking before training this morning at the SFS, Slovak midfielder Karol Kisel conceded such a style was not what Sydney FC was about.

"We need to improve in this. I think we will, we need to play more short balls. I think it was an exception in this game," he said.

"We can improve for sure. But seven points from three matches is not a bad start and we need to confirm it this week. We need a win and we will have ten points so it will be a really good start, so I'm not disappointed."

Statistics showed long balls out of sky blues' defence were greater in number than the Mariners in last week's 0-0 draw in Gosford.

It was a surprise to many in what turned out to be a game that only ignited in the final minutes with the penalty drama involving Clint Bolton's heroics.

Coach Vitezslav Lavicka echoed those comments saying the Mariners' game plan forced Sydney to stop playing out from the back. But he added players need to make the right decisions on the park.

Nix seem to have really gained some credability in the last two weeks. A lot of Aussie pundits are picking a draw - something novel compared to the usual practice of understimating us!

Is the choice of Marco over Costa an indication that he has gone ahead in the pecking order or do we think it is simply an attempt to give Marco the experience of travelling with the squad to an away game and seeing the whole process?

A bit of B I would think, and a little of C where they see Costa as a striker and Marco as midfield cover. Hard News2009-08-28 15:17:18

So is Gould going to be the assistant manager at the same time as being the reserve keeper?

Surely some potential for conflict of interest here:
"Ricki, Reece is looking a bit tired out there - how about we sub him off?"

And will this mean we have a subs bench with one empty chair?

Wellington Phoenix squad: 1. Mark PASTON (gk), 2. Manny MUSCAT, 3. Tony LOCHHEAD, 4. Jon McKAIN, 5. DIEGO, 7. Leo BERTOS, 8. Paul IFILL, 9. Chris GREENACRE, 10. Michael FERRANTE, 11. DANIEL, 13. Troy HEARFIELD, 17. Vince LIA, 18. Ben SIGMUND, 20. Reece CROWTHER (gk), 21. Marco ROJAS, 22. Andrew DURANTE (c), 30. Jonathan GOULD (gk). *two to be omitted

So one keeper will be omitted. So Rojas looks unlikely unless someones travelling with a niggle?

On another note, no Brown?? Well not in this squad anyway. So I do feel like we might see Lia given a start. Well I hope so.

Bit of a worry after watching his game against Guangzhou. He was a bit poor.  Hopefully it was an aberration.

Our first player-coach...

Seeing Rojas would be FANTASTIC but I wouldn't wish injuries onj anyone. Still no Chen either, he was in an earlier squad with #12.

You know we belong together...

I can see three scenarios.
We score more than them and thus we win.
We score less than them and we lose.
The scores are level and the match is drawn.

Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

With the news of Paston I must say I am very worried.

We are going to go back to the old days when the other team scores many goals against us and forces us to make many saves. Only problem is that Crowther is not as good as Moss was at cleaning up the mess he created by diving around like a circus clown.
