So where is this footage that damns Manny to the status of malicious thug? Could one of the righteously indignant perhaps please post a link or something?

As the Ref took no action it will come down to match review panel. but from my seat at the stadium it did not look anything but a strong tackle and win the ball.

My footage was from clip on the iPhone A-League App (currently in Melbourne so don't have access to mYSky and all that). I don't think that footage is 100% conclusive either way, and that's all I've seen (was at match), and depends a lot on your predisposition towards Manny. Manny's previous record will not stand him in good stead.

This forum is somewhat guilty of swinging wildly (not in the suburban sense .... to my knowledge).

I know, I know, its serious!

Did Manny go over to Marco to see if he was ok?

This is a major blow for us if he does get suspended, which he deserves for the severity of the tackle.

What is Manny's previous?

Not sure that is quite accurate. I saw him interviewed and it was not more than 30 mins after the game.

Same story on the A-League website.  This game day has turned to custard for us.

I cant remember if Manny has elbowed anyone else, but he is prone to flashes of anger. I remember him getting skinned by Tommy Orr a few times ina game, and he got sentoff cos he jut snapped.

I seemto have memories of him doing it in other games.he  seems ok, then something goes and he does something stupid.

happy to be corrected though

Whether you like it or not is was purposely raised elbow and shoulder check. The guy (Maddy) was stand out in some of the games and, undeniably, did some good things for the team, but in reality has anger management problem and struggles to pull out of some of the potentially conflict situations on the field. May be Ricki, being defender himself, likes this style of play as MM is not the only one who does it?

As I said before, the main focus should be on playing football...

I was at the game too, was hoping it wasn't so serious and that it was accidental but just seen the replays and it does not look good, definitely raised his forearm and no he didn't stop to check on him, he ran off with half a look over his shoulder.

If the contact was enough to break his jaw he would have stopped to check on him if it was accidental I would have thought.
So very disappointing I'd say he's gone for the season now, Marco out for who knows how long, further sours relations with him.

As if the result was not bad enough after we packed out the away supporters bay, I'm not surprised Ricki didn't hang around

Don't agree with some of the mind readers who seem to have tagged Muscat's tackle as an intended attack on Marco, when both players were committed in that tackle.
It was not pretty but its hardly conclusive, imo. Marco lunges in at the ball attempting to regain control and it could be argued Manny has his arm up in defence, and crucially he's looking at the ball right through the whole movement, not at Marco.
How the match review panel see it is the critical question however, with some potentially massive repercussions for the Nix for next weekend's match and the finals series, if the outcome is unfavourable.

I'd like to think it was accidental, but I just don't know. I also don't want to jump to any conclusions based on the fact he didnt look back at him and got on with the game or just because he is our player.

He'll probably get suspended though, not because it was deliberate (the review panel aren't mind readers either) but because it was dangerous.

Allegedly

There was talk of Ricki leaving the stadium earlier.  I'll bet he went straight down the tunnel to the medical treatment rooms.. his first thought would have been to check on Marco's condition, and second thought (as Technical Director) was to ring Emblem with an update so he could get things sorted back here for the U23s.

I'm not up to play with the A League disciplinary rules. If it's judged to be accidental but still dangerous will he likely get a shorter ban than if its considered deliberate? I think a one match ban would be manageable for the Nix as we already have a home finals game locked in, but 2 or 3 games would start to worry me.

This is right to me.

Manny plays it tough, he isnt afraid of a challenge, but I doubt he goes in to harm people. Youve got the wrong Muscat if you think that

Disappointed with Muscat challenge. If it was accidental he could have gone back to check on Marco, team mates for how long?

Stumped by Ricki playing Smith out wide... ?

Watched at the pub with no sound so luckily couldnt hear Slater tongueing Kewell's balls. Lost count of the number of times Kewell was whining at the referee, give it a rest you tool.

Manny just went in HARD. Its why we love him so much. If it had been any other player that got hurt it wouldnt even rate a mention in the forums. The oly-whites should be fine without him. I hope that Manny does not get suspended as it was just a hard tackle

From the replays I saw it looked liked Manny only had his eyes on the ball, and his arms seemed to be in a natural position.  I guess it doesn't help that Marco is pretty short so his head comes up to most players shoulders.

So what makes you think it was deliberate.

Nah, he's clearly leading and leaning with his elbow in the direction of Marco. No way is his arm in a natural position considering the nature of the tackle.

At the very least you can argue that the tackle used excessive amount of force which endangered the opposition player, and that's a red card offence under the LotG.

That looks pretty nature to me, an doesn't look like leading with an elbow.

my view is similar to charliec's

1) it is a shame Rojas is injured

2) i hope the a-league don't use it as an opportunity to dent our play-offs chances

Have a look at the shot from behind, it is very clear he's leading with his elbow.

Even on that shot his elbow does not have to be there at all. el grapadura2012-03-18 15:27:23

Rubbish.

Manny has his arm no higher than his own chest, exactly where you would expect it to be if trying to fend a player off in the tackle. Meanwhile Rojas almost has his left knee on the ground!

To me this is just an unfortunate combination of Manny going in hard as always and Rojas taking a bad touch and then lunging after the ball.

Reckless? Maybe. Deliberate? No. Typical A-League injury where the players skillz are not exactly world-class.

The question isn't how high the elbow is, but how far extended towards Marco it is.

Also, I'd like to point out for those confused people out there, using the elbows to effect a tackle in the game of football is actually illegal in the LotG. Just a heads up.

Arm looks to be about 45 degrees.  About the same angle as Marcos.

EG sorry but no one who plays football goes into a tackle thinking about where they should position their arms to suit the opposing player. Usually arms are used for balance more than anything so if you are to hold your arms away from players in tackles you are not going to spend much time upright.

Fuck this stupid game

Manny's arm isn't in the wrong place, Marco's head is!

Have a bad feeling about this one. To me it's clearly innocuous. Tall vs Short player, no intent whatsoever, but the little guy accidentally cops it in the jaw.

However, I'm worried that the FFA will punish Manny based on the result rather than the actual conduct, which would be grossly unfair.

Unless Manny had a rearview mirror mounted on his forehead I don't see how that could be judged a deliberate elbow with the intention of causing injury.

However judging by the censorious tut-tutting of several of the Fox commentators this one is being watched and he will definitely go down to protect the image of the game. Meanwhile the Heffernans and Burns's of this world chuck deliberate elbows with merry abandon and get away with it.
