with boyd back, and manny still out - I think we drop huysegems & totori and bring smith in so sanchez can play further forward.

Neither Huysegems or Totori took their chance last week & boyd has been very good in previous weeks. Totori is also best from bench.

Would leave a bench of stein, totori, Lindsay & McMaster. Which is probably a lot more balanced than we have had previously.
Remember Hogg cant play this game

It will be interesting to see if Tyler slots straight back in. I thingk Smith should be starting too, so probably agree with you, or give Steiny one more starters chance.

I think Waffles needs to be a part of a front 2, which was the original plan for the season. With just 1 in the middle, I don't think we will see the best of him.

Paston to the bench, give mcmaster a crack.

same old back four,

Fenton, Sanchez, Smith, brockie

    Stein   Tyler

bench: Paston, Lia, Totori, Hogg

in some shape or formation that Welnix want

Queenslander 3x a year.

I totally agree with this, and that's not saying he's not good enough to be a starter, i'm just more of the thinking that with his pace, and attack focus, bringing him on to run at tired defenders is a great tactical element to have.
I personally thought he should have come on in the second half against a tired Traore. Traore was always going to have his measure, and as they both tired at the same rate, then the effectiveness was lost.
Totori was able to beat him easily on occasion as we saw, but imagine the carnage he would have caused running at him with fresh legs during the second half.
I think Waffles should also come on as a sub due to a similar factor to why I think Ifill should come off the bench from now on too. Him coming on fresh at tired defenders means they've got a LOT of work to do, when they probably can't be bothered. Again, it's not that I think he's not worthy of starting, i just think that at least yetting our young guys take it to defenders for 60 - 70 minutes, and wear them out, then bring on players frsh that are going to cause a whole heap of new and different headaches is a decent way of using subs in this league.
And please put Sanchez back in that attacking midfield role. Brockie back up top.

Another swiss cheese formation. Did last week teach you that this does not work?

Agree Totori should stick to the bench. Why he got a starting gig is a little beyond me. He is a 30min footballer at best so use him to run at tired players. I think Smith should come in for him so that they can revert to the 4-3-3 model they have used until last week. It gives us a little bit more screening across our defensive midfield and means our front guys (who hardly track back) are not relied on to do so. Also Smith is a better link in the Lia-Sanchez axis.

The Stein for Boyd one will be interesting. I think if I were Ricki, I would be careful how I handle this. Brockie is going to start, that's a given based on his goals and Ricki gushing over him in the press. He was anonymous last week though so.... You then are picking 2/3 from Stein, Boyd and Fenton. Conventional wisdom says that Boyd would come back in and revert back to what he used prior to the Melbourne game. with Boyd, Fenton and Brockie up front. I think if I was looking at the team right now, the young guys are holding their own and giving probably more than we expected at the start of the season. I think however, there is a little bit of experience missing in that front 3rd. The premise last week was to have Stein as the target man/receiver and have Brockie run off of him but we never got anywhere near that because we came from out wide rather than through Sanchez (which is what probably should happen to use Stein as that receiver). I thought perhaps then that they may have used Stein as a facilitator to help Totori and Fenton get in behind the back wide two (similar to what Melbourne does) but that never happened either. If Ricki is expecting Bertos and Lochhead to supply the balls into the box, then a midget like Boyd is wasted.
I personally would give Fenton a wide roaming role where he can go from flank to flank (similar to what Ifill used to do). He has Sanchez as a facilitating option, Stein to come across and act as an axis for him if needed (and Stein does have lovely ball control) and Brockie is a target man. The experience of Stein would help so I would be inclined to leave Boyd on the bench. He also provides a tall option for the crosses.

That's my logic anyway.

No. Just no. Did you not see all the saves he pulled off against Brisbane? He hasn't been at fault for any of the goals we have been conceding in the past month. McMaster was brought in as injury cover for Moss, not as someone to push Pasty for the starting spot.

Two things I want to see from this game

1, Better defense. Forget about playing styles. You will never win games if your defenders keep making basic defensive errors. Whats required is better marking in the box, players not rushing out of formation(Siggy), players  pushing up and not playing attackers on side(Locky). This stuff is really Defending 101. Our back 5 have probably 400 to 500 A-League games between them....they should be doing a lot better.

2, Attack. Playing Sanchez at DM was a success(partially) It showed how you could transform our game by having someone deeper who has good vision, can pass accurately with either feet and has good ball control. Sanchez probably is not physically robust enough as a true DM but he did add plenty. Why his passing game was not a 100% success was because playing Brockie as a sort of AM did not work....wrong sort of player. Sanchez did not have a central passing option so was obliged to try and hit the wide guys with passes. I would like to see either Fenton or Boyd tuck in more centrally and provide that option. Big ask for a teenager I know but it might work.

If we go back to Smith and Lia as DM's then its just reverting to the same old problem. Neither have the skill to do what Sanchez was doing. Slightly more out of left field would be to keep the same team as last week (except Boyd for Totori) and switch Stein for Brockie. Brockie goes up front and Stein drops to a more AM role. Out of the whole squad Sanchez and Stein are the two players who have the best skills to play one touch football in crowded situations. Stein looks like a player who likes to bring in other players.....might work!

Trouble is these sort of things should be trialed and refined in the off season against teams like Lower Hutt. Not in midseason where you are desperate for instant results.

I can put up with not so good results if I see a plan...something we are aiming for and are making progress. Our home record is not flash this year..7 games, 3 wins, 9 goals for and 7 against. WSW has one of the best defenses in the League...expect a low scoring match.

I would be willing to see that given a go.  Its got to either be something like this, or back to the 4-3-3, with Smith coming alongside Lia, and Sanchez pushing further forward.  Agreed with your comment on Sanchez and Stein especially, but the bolded part even more.

Let's start off by not conceding a goal in the three minutes before halftime, like we have been in nearly every game over the past month. It's almost like we lose our concentration.

YES YES!
He can pass dammit! I wouldn't mind seeing him on the wing either. I don't think he is really the striker we need. He'd be better setting up Brockie. And he's clinical so he will take care of his chances he can pick up from other positions.

Agree with the Waffles in AM sentiment. Sanchez is good there too, but it gives us some options. Not so sure about him on the wing though TBH.
