quote from page 2 of the Dom sports section this morning

(and before you ask, News - "because it's not online")

>>>"[The Phoenix]... is chasing a pre-season fixture next year against one of the biggest names in world football, Liverpool, at the Westpac Stadium.

"Yes, that's one of the names we'd like to get", Phoenix boss Tony Pignata confirmed. "We'd like to get Man U, Liverpool, Chelsea, one of the big clubs....". <<

So pretty much wishful talk at this stage, but the Nix do have a habit of making things happen. it's a long time to hold your breath but fans of the 'new big three' might be interested in keeping an eye on this.

There are Pro's and Con's to this idea

Pro's: It will be a success and sell out, it will lift the profile no end, it will cement even more so the Phoenix as a success story.

Con's: It would be a thrashing, could possibly impact on Phoenix image if it was a poor scoreline.
The Ring of Fire may not be large enough for teams of that calibre and selling out the seating.

Would it? Not suggetsing for a minute that we'd win, but would they really kill us like your suggesting?

Would they even send their first team?

The big four "pretty boy's" players would never come this far, besides most of the players don't know where Wellington is!

And if chelsea or arse-nil's players, went this far from the UK they would never be allowed back in.

Doubt it, maybe one or two of the bigger names might come, but not the first squad, proabably the reserve team or the under 21 squad!

If they didn't guarantee a team with at least a couple of name players, why would we even bother?

imagine if the team that came had a couple of fringe players who (like Ed Baranowski) really liked the lifestyle over here ..... and one or both of them decided to come back to live here ... and after about 2 months got fed up with running their kiwi business interests or whatever.. and decided to see if the Nix had a spare peg in the dressing room

or should I just leave the imagining stuff to John Lennon?

It would never be Arsenal as they have an ongoing pre season tournament at the Emirates every season, plus regular attendances at the Ajax tournament. before either of thos games they go play a couple of Austrian teams, and have thier pre season training near the alps. liverpool and Man U often head out to Asia so it wouldnt be much of a stretch to see them come here.

Totally agree and would explain why the Gunners weren't mentioned. Not sure if a game against the other 3 would sell out though. The reason I say that is whether supporters of other English clubs would really want to go and see ManYoo, Chelsea or Liverpool. I suppose I would go just for the opportunity to see the Nix knock one of them over
Also mentioned was the fact that the cost would be so large to bring one of them here that it would probably have to be shared with a game in Aussie.

I'm sure a game against Manure or Liverpool would sell out. Not so sure on Chelski though.

Hell I'd go though!

Fairly certain that Tony P was quoted as saying they were looking at sharing the costs to bring them down,so that would suggest maybe a game in Aussie as well.As for attendance i would think it would be very good I mean they could be playing the A league champions.

if you go down to a junior club or park and see the amount of man utd chelski and pool shirts young kids are wearing while playing footy it would be hard to imagine how you could not selll out the cake tin for a exhib game! If they almost did it for just beckham imagine if you had drogba terry lampard cech cole x 2 or ronaldo rooney tevez ferdinand etc etc only way it wouldnt happen would be if ticket prices were too high or majority to front line players werent involved. There is enough awareness of the clubs and players for it to be a sell out and for the public to realise what a treat it is to have em down here!

Mark my words, Chelsea will be nowhere next season, brace your selves for the mass exodus once they lose to Unied on Thursday, just like Barca.

I'm pretty sure Man United came as far as Australia in 2000 maybe? I don't know who they played against though
Oh Wellington is wonderful. We got the wind, the rain and the phoenix. Oh Wellington is wonderful.

I'd actually pay to see C Ronaldo play. Him and Thierry Henry are the kind of players you'd part cash with even if you don't support the teams they play for.

I reckon that if we hosted the Galaxy, we can host anyone else. English big clubs will be welcome down under given their international prestige and the large portion of the ex-pats or english football fans down here.

So why not?!

Any of the big four clubs (saying that in the vain hope Arsenal will skip all their pre-season obligations and come) could sell out a stadium in New Zealand.  If the Phoenix had a "series" of sorts against one of those teams with a game in Dunedin, Christchurch, Wellington, and then Auckland, I'd bet every one of those games would sell out.

In Arsenals case the ring of fire has the same capacity as Highbury did.

Didn't the mancs play a friendly testimonial in the UAE or somewhere around there this season for 2mil?

it'd be a sell out against any one of those teams

Ring of Fire's slightly smaller I think.  Highbury's capacity was 38 500 if memory serves me correct and at the Galaxy game it was nearly sold out and it was 31 000 and something.

34,500 for the stadium here.

It's really peeving me that we can only guss whether certain clubs could sell out RoF or not. Take the Juve game for example, most football fans would jump at the chanc to see nedved, del piero and trezeguetr play, but The Phoenix played it safe and said no in case we wouldn't fill the stadium, but if we can get over 30000 for the Galaxy, i reckon hosting Juventus would be worthwhile, of course i don't have the stats or the money but if we keep iffing and butting over who we get over here we'll probably end up playing the Galaxy every couple of years and nothing else

Problem is, none of the big names you mentioned turned up to play Melbourne Victory last week. Also Melbourne has a very large soccer-mad Italian population, many of them Juve supporters, which definitely boosted the crowd for that game despite those players being missing. A game in Wellington would've unfortunately been financially too risky. Someone like Liverpool or Man U is a much better bet when the time is right.

Doesn't matter, I saw Swindon (div 2 at the time/ the Championship) pre season against a Man U 11, average age of the manyoo team - 22.  They stuffed our 1st 11 4-0.

Premiership team comes to play, we'd get absolutely stuffed.

We sold 30,000 tickets for David Beckham not the LA Galaxy

Melbourne also has a population ten times that of Wellington...

The big four English clubs would recoup the investment for the Nix, but I doubt there would be many other club teams that would.

I wouldn't mind having Ryan Nelsen organise a game vs. Blackburn Rovers; that ought to be good.
Mind you, in every thing he says he sounds like he wouldn't want to rock the boat at the club (re All White appearances), so I wouldn't hold out much hope either ...
