I really don't get why people are bitching about the Auckland crowd when it's the one game Gareth Morgan made money off the nix this year. He has to pay for his cat assassinations somehow, people. Think of the cats!

He won't be paying for them off the game yesterday. They lost money on playing it in Auckland this time. There's some happy cats around

So why take games on the road? Out of 11k at the Auckland game, maybe 4k of those were Welly people= 7k were Aucklandites and from other places within reach, therefore the financial adavantage (which is actually all the owners are interested in now, it seems from some recent statements) has disappeared.

If all of the marketing effort went into the Wellington region and it was recognised at long last that Wellington is the Capital of New Zealand Football  and this will NEVER change, is in the middle of the country with great communications (i.e. let them come to us), the core group will increase organically. Then Welnix make money, Fever increases etc.

Win-Win.

Damn I'm clever..................and Gareth, keep your hands off my pussy, bitch.....

3k or more exaggeration I would say.

Why not just be happy with a good crowd of 10 plus plus Aucklanders enjoying the game once in a year, and us getting a win

I dont think Brockie is a bad player (definitly aleague quality), but I think stein is a fantastic player that has been completely misused by RH

I will completely lose faith in Herbert if I see Lochead starting at any point when Hogg is available. They are not even in the same league. Hogg did extremely well. Cernak also impressed while waffles seems to be getting back to form. Still a little shaky down the back but much better.

totally. Even my girlfriend who was reading a book while I was watching commented on how bored the commentators sounded

Keep Hogg on!!

It always frustrated me that not only was Lockhead slow to recover, he always showed the attackers the inside and allowed them to easilly play back into the centre of the pitch.

I seen Hogg sprinting back to recover after ifill got dispossesed (why doesnt he play the simple ball early more often) and especially like that he shows the attackers the touchline and closes them down enough to make them get their head down.

I think he did well and will grow better with confidence - keep him on

Comments based on not seeing the ECFC-Waitak game -
1) city Waitakere game - way better
2) Ian Hogg - ECFC's best player.
3) shame for city but that's football - fans were amazing
5) Me encanta la ciudad!

 Hogg was absolutely quality yesterday.

Cernak aslo looked good.

Hopefeully this result gives them a real boost, however next week will be a real toughie.

Enjoyed both games yesterday. As far as entertainment went I actually thought the City v Waitak game was a bit better though, more goals, plenty of tackles flying in as you'd expect in a derby. But both were good.

Cernak looked sharp, actually got on the ball and went forward from midfield which seems to be something Nix have been missing.

Hogg ok, did his job, didnt make any glaring errors. Siggy looks a bit out of form. Interesting to see how Boxall goes next week.

Would like to see a midfield 3 of Sanchez - Cernak - Manny at some stage.

I like Stein's play, maybe just not suiting Nix style completely, give it to his feet FFS.

Now that I'm completely sober , stupid thought time. Dura was significantly better yesterday than he has been recently. All the crap with "total football" , who said what and when , pussies galore etc must have got to the players a bit. Over the last week or so , there has been reported comment from Dura  , Leo etc that they'd rather win and push for the playoffs if possible , rather than subscribe to some ( albeit admirable) 5 year plan. Certainly the performance yesterday hinted at a more robust , dare I say " traditional" Phoenix game. I wonder if , as team captain , Dura has laid down some sort of marker and said "bugger it , this is what we're going to do". He looked far more assured  , as if he'd got control of his own game and team plan, yesterday. Of course RH has overall control , but I'm just idly speculating.Serves me right for posting when sober.

I think what the last few months has highlighted, for me, are Herbert's and our squad's limitations - they simply don't have the skills to coach and play a possession based game and get results.

Playing our traditional "style" for the balance of this season is probably a pragmatic and sensible approach given our coach and squad's
limitations but I found last night's game painful to watch - not helped by the mind numbing drone of the commentators

The casual supporters I watched the game with switched off after about 10 minutes - that contrasted with their complete engagement watching the Melbourne derby.

Last night's game vindicated the owners determination to raise the standard of play.

P.S. yes an ugly win is better than an ugly loss but I'm over ugly being our only option to get points and can't wait to see Phoenix v2.0

WRT to Commentary Posts :

Did the petition to get Dewhurst red-carded succeed ?

My only issue with FdJ and Harry is that they are not convincing, and always ask a question at the end of a comment , as in "They are not very good commentators, are they ?"

Living in AKL, I was at the game , and sitting near a rugger-bugger who kept on wondering out loud why all those people were standing up.

Of which aforementioned section were stoic in the defense of the Mexican Wave. Five times they tried and gave up . Superb defence.

Had exactly the same thing happen with our 'Nix BBQ get together.  One of the guys went on a garden tour and the women were over it as their primary focus inside 10 mins.

Would like to see a Cernak-Sanchez-Manny midfield with Ifill-Stein-Brockie up front and try to develop a better game with them consistently playing together; and Hogg and Leo at the back give us the wheels to both cover and get forward.  I doubt that would win the league, but anything without Lia in the middle is an improvment.  Next season look to replace Sanchez with something better again starting.

Season aint over and 5th/6th definately in reach, but Nix-Perth was very, very ordinary at best

Gareth is exactly on the button, though he'll never be a diplomat.  Apart from the Feverites that post here and the core 4k or so that gets to games with them, the 'Nix is stuffed as an entertainment option for the additional sports/entertainment following until they lift their game.  And quite a lot.

Just got home from Auckland, fantastic trip. A few highlights for me:

  • a few of us got to the game early, and Vukovic was warming up his goal kicks down in front of us, and there was some good chanting and equally good responses from Danny, culminating in us chanting 'Can you hit the referee?' to try and get him to kick the ball at the refs, also warming up for the game. He got very, very close, but no cigar.
  • Continually shutting down the mexican wave, and when the group trying to start them started booing us, chanted back 'We're here to watch the football!'
  • The Fox pre and post game. Thanks to all that organised it for us, the big breakfast was superb before the match.
  • The ref and his two linesmen turned up to the Fox after the game. I felt obliged to apologise to them for what stern words I may have directed at them during the game.

A vital win but as others have alluded to, pretty dull stuff that really was a tough ask to get through. Genuinely could not wait until it was finished so I could go do something more exciting, like watch paint dry.

Wellington vs Perth games haven't really been overly exciting in the past either. It's two physical teams, who don't play overly attractive football, who cancel each other out.

I thoroughly enjoyed the occasion, drinks in the Dominion Pub beforehand with plenty of Phoenix in there and the spicy Bratwurst were magnificent! Ground out a good win as well. Dissapointed that 9,000 who were there last year did not show, but I know 4 so called Nix fans (replica shirts, scarves and all) who did not show this time around, as the Phoenix are 'not winning'. What can you say about people like that? Also, glad to see the pathetic Mexican wave shut down - well done YF!! There is no place for that fabricated rubbish at football.

I would not miss the chance to see the Nix play in Auckland, just for the sheer craic of it. Great day out.

Having said that, the Belgian guy has to go.............

No, I'm stoked with the win, and I think the rest of the Fever Zone were too, judging by the way we celebrated at the fulltime whistle. Most of those people are still in Auckland and not back to posting here though I guess.

So on or about the same level as the football?
I don't really get people complaining about commentators - some are good, some are poor - who cares unless they are really trying to be bigger than the product your watching.
If you don't like Andrew Duhurst (which i hear many of you don't) and you don't like Fred then who do you suggest should be doing it?

Piney (I know, not going to happen, but I think he would be fantastic) or GGW, and Harry Ngata can stay on as colour commentator.

This. A dour 1-0 win tends to be on the cards one way or the other every time we play. Stoked with the three points.

You are clearly pathetic and unsophisticated. Wins are meaningless if they aren't attractive and/or part of the 3-5 year plan.
