No i'm serious - what was so bad?  if you just don't like him fine - but what was he doing that was so bad?

As someone else pointed out. Portland Timberwolves. Sky coverage thread

is that it?

really? you actually had no prob with his commentary. he was just so dour and depressing. it was like he was commentating golf. he and harry were sleepwalking.

So on or about the same level as the football?
I don't really get people complaining about commentators - some are good, some are poor - who cares unless they are really trying to be bigger than the product your watching.
If you don't like Andrew Duhurst (which i hear many of you don't) and you don't like Fred then who do you suggest should be doing it?

Turn the Tv down, and the radio up, fixed

Very happy with the win. Had a few rugby mates with me, they loved the second half, esp the tension towards the end, the shirts off, and Cernaks near winner.

In all seriousness, I'd rather see us play like that and win than trying to tika-taka and lose. A game like that could be just the sort of thing to get some confidence back for the team.

Saw him in action at the Breakers the night before [compere]. Now I don't like him at all, his voice really grates on me on radio and tv, but he did a really really good job at the basketball, I was impressed. [slashes wrists]

Yep, I felt dirty thinking the same thing. He was really good at doing the breakers.

There must be something wrong with me, but I actually enjoyed the game. In fact, I haven't been to a game yet that I haven't disliked [I've only seen them lose once, the 0-1 at Palmy]. If I lived in Wellington I'd have a Nix season ticket, if i live din Auckland I'd have a Breakers season ticket.

Didn't think anyone had a bad game; thought these guys went extra well: Ifill, Hogg, Bertos, Cernak, Lia, Dura, Paston.

Stein was pretty pissed off when taken off [is there some tension there?] but Fenton added a little bit more when he came on.

An hour of highlights has just started on SS3 for those of you who've always found a football match about 30 mins too long.

Cernak great in 37-41 minute on highlights I just watched..

A small town in Europe........looking to bounce straight back up....well that aint going to happen

That would have to be the most shittiest game I have watched live (although anything involving YH Manawatu would probably shade it)

We got 3 points, great. We got a win, great. I don't mind the winning ugly if we do it all the time but another 90 mins of that might drive me back to drink (recovering alcoholic here).

Now that I'm completely sober , stupid thought time. Dura was significantly better yesterday than he has been recently. All the crap with "total football" , who said what and when , pussies galore etc must have got to the players a bit. Over the last week or so , there has been reported comment from Dura  , Leo etc that they'd rather win and push for the playoffs if possible , rather than subscribe to some ( albeit admirable) 5 year plan. Certainly the performance yesterday hinted at a more robust , dare I say " traditional" Phoenix game. I wonder if , as team captain , Dura has laid down some sort of marker and said "bugger it , this is what we're going to do". He looked far more assured  , as if he'd got control of his own game and team plan, yesterday. Of course RH has overall control , but I'm just idly speculating.Serves me right for posting when sober.

A few of us travelling back from the game were discussing this. Who exactly is running the team now? and how much has player power got us back on the winning way.?

There have been loads of rumours in the previous weeks of players being unhappy and even some splits between the players and coach . Ricki even slagged a couple off in public, which is quite unusual. There was even  talk that Ricki had lost the dressing room.

Then there have been comments from the likes of Ifill about the senior guys "sorting stuff out". This week  Durante said that the players had got together and decided that they had better make some changes and get back to winning ways. Ricki was then quoted in the NZHerald as saying that was "incorrect". Leo later made comments that seemed to back up Durante.

So whats up?  The senior players certainly looked more relaxed and in control then they have for quite some times against Perth. To what extent have they taken over the reins?....supposedly Ricki is still coaching his possession football at training. But the players  seem to be implementing something different on the field now.

I guess it is entirely plausible that after the Sydney fiasco the senior players got together and said...enough of this shit, we are going to sort things out. Good luck to them if they did...because something needed to be done.

I think what the last few months has highlighted, for me, are Herbert's and our squad's limitations - they simply don't have the skills to coach and play a possession based game and get results.

Playing our traditional "style" for the balance of this season is probably a pragmatic and sensible approach given our coach and squad's
limitations but I found last night's game painful to watch - not helped by the mind numbing drone of the commentators

The casual supporters I watched the game with switched off after about 10 minutes - that contrasted with their complete engagement watching the Melbourne derby.

Last night's game vindicated the owners determination to raise the standard of play.

P.S. yes an ugly win is better than an ugly loss but I'm over ugly being our only option to get points and can't wait to see Phoenix v2.0

Had exactly the same thing happen with our 'Nix BBQ get together.  One of the guys went on a garden tour and the women were over it as their primary focus inside 10 mins.

Would like to see a Cernak-Sanchez-Manny midfield with Ifill-Stein-Brockie up front and try to develop a better game with them consistently playing together; and Hogg and Leo at the back give us the wheels to both cover and get forward.  I doubt that would win the league, but anything without Lia in the middle is an improvment.  Next season look to replace Sanchez with something better again starting.

Season aint over and 5th/6th definately in reach, but Nix-Perth was very, very ordinary at best

Gareth is exactly on the button, though he'll never be a diplomat.  Apart from the Feverites that post here and the core 4k or so that gets to games with them, the 'Nix is stuffed as an entertainment option for the additional sports/entertainment following until they lift their game.  And quite a lot.

stein is an absolute dud. ricki sure knows how to pick em

I agree he's not looking a star
but he's what we've got
alt. brockie up front and throw on fenton/boyd, but I don't see that as a huge obvious improvement, so I'd give Stein more opportunity to repeat his form of the first few games he played for us and for combinations to develop.  Ricki hasn't helped him with any continuity of game time.
my point is really if we want to beat teams slightly less dire than Perth without Burns and Smeltz, then we are going to need to score more goals
I'd give Manny/Sanchez/Cernak||Ifill/Stein/Brockie a solid run of games
the win was good but we have some tougher games coming and we will be very lucky to win them 1-0 or hold a 1-1 draw
I think we need some more in the net
---------------------

Also, I think from the Brisbane Mariners game on Friday that Broich is getting back to form and that their new Dutch signing is going to be a heck of a handful.  One of those two open top six slots may just go their way.
So five teams fighting it out for the remaining slot I think.

Entertaining game at Kiwitea, lots of fun in the FZ, winding Danny V up pre and during the match, tension in the second half, countdown to shirts off contrasting with countdown to Mex wave, fun in the pub, bloody tired now, a win! Yes!

I think Stein gets a bad rap for being poor when it really not his fault, the way we play (win) ie direct and crosses into the box isn't suited to him. Surely you buy in a player (striker) who you want to lead the line and you play to his strengths, several times he has shown us when he has the ball to his feet he can beat anyone. How often has he had that chance?

I'm not sure about that "beat anyone" shout.
I think what he has shown is that he can finish if we can get the ball in front of him in the box. But, as many have noted, we don't really play that way. So he's a bit wasted.
Plenty of chat about this on the last couple of In The Zone podcasts.

Two teams playing hoofball is not nearly as bad as a mexican wave. Cringe.

A game lacking any quality. Only 3 shots on target all game, 1 for the 'Nix. Execution was poor for the most part. Luckily Perth played worse than us. I thought Cernak was barely ok, I think Sanchez has a better first touch, better ball control and a better passer. If we are looking at playing a more possession based game next season I would pass on Cernak or at most have him as a squad player.

CCM is going to be a real test to see where we are at in terms of our mini recovery. Our bunnies Newcastle and a woeful Perth don't really give us an indication of where we are at.

While I completely agree with your overall point, the Stat Nazi in me needs to point out that we had TWO shots on target. The goal and Cernak's strike at the open net at the end.
