is it agreed that "we've got the worst commentators in the league" or is it just me. they seemed like a couple of monotone muppets on the air tonight Man_utd_fan2009-08-16 19:37:14

The whole sky setup is lacking in comparison to FoxSports in my opinion, it really makes the point that they don't really give two hoots

True - while I have been a silent sympathiser of wellyphoenixfan's one man campaign to deify Paston, a couple of times out there today where he didn't seem to know where shots were going. The first one that hit the bar, he half-heartedly stuck a hand up as if he thought it was going over, & he seemed to be going the wrong way for a wide shot late in the game. There was one occasion where he came to punch the ball in the first half and ended flapping/slaaping it instead - fortunately we got a free kick for offside.

I don't think he's awful, and didn't jump on him last week after the loss. I thought he played well in the games he had last season, and brought different strengths and weakness to Moss.

However, despite the team winning today, he didn't really give WPF any ammunition either. it wasn't a convincing or confidence-inspiring display.wolfman2009-08-16 23:30:23

When I saw that I instantly thought he was trying to be like Moss. Not the best game from him but no where near enough for him to be dropped. Hopefully he will improve because at the moment he just seems confused.

His organisational skills looked spot on however as he did very little work this game and the goal was Ferrente's fault not the defences or himself.

frig me it was cold! great crowd, much better play than last game, and Diego > Brown but we all knew that!

We were a bit lucky - they hit tht the post twice after all, but still, pretty damn happy!

paston is probably still a bit fresh, he hasn't had consistant game time for a couple of years so give him a couple more before he gets some serious criticism. imo.

I'll start by congratulating Welly on a terrific crowd despite the rain, the chanting was fantastic as well, and will get better.

Diego, Ifill and Bertos were incredible. Paston, Siggy, Lochhead, McKain and Greenacre were up for it and apart from a few mistakes betwen them Dura and Ferrante did well, no real reason to drop anyone from the starting XI.

Fantastic result.

You know we belong together...

I haven't seen anyone suggest that Paston should be dropped. He's just not as great as you think he is.

Great game

Have watched all the games this weekend, and there have been some great strikes, some truely wonderful strikes.

But Super Leo's was the sweetest of them all. MOM again for me, not just the goal but overall play. Looks like he knows what he wants to do, where he wants to be and goes for it with silky skills. Loved the nutmeg he did too

Liked the look of Ifill, Close 2nd to Leo for MOM. He is hungry and looks good and sharp in the early stages, had 3 excellent shots and one was unstoppable

Thrilled to get points  -  3  :)    on the board

If He was the weak link as you suggest then they would of attacked down his flank, which they didn't all night. Even the commentator said with 10 minutes to go that Lochead has had very little defending to do.

He didn't venture forward like we like, but he didn't do anything wrong defensively.

Actually I was thinking more of his passing which was often atrocious, several times gifting the ball straight to Perth and then leaving the defence badly caught out. I expected him to lift his game a notch from last week but he appears to have lost confidence in my book.

And sorry, whatever the commentators said his defending was nothing to write home about.

Ferrante should be dropped. That first mistake was schoolboy stuff. Good game, absolutely stoked with the result but we rode our luck a bit. Ifill and Bertos were inspiring.

Well last week after a similar performance people were calling for him to be dropped so I was preparing...

Also I hope we keep this formation for away games. Brown on the bench however in case we get into trouble on the road.wellyphoenixfan2009-08-16 20:11:39

sums it up wel - great to get a result, did ride our luck - they had most of the play in the 2nd half, still some question marks over defence. 1st half we looked the goods.
Good to see a better attitude by the players - more attacking.

Why not, especially we played so much better without him, why bring him in again. We are playing to win. Drop someone, others take their chance, that person has to earn their way back.

Ok but he was so good for us last season. Also I am thinking of the WCQ later in the year.

interesting arguement. Does Ricky chose country over club for timmy brown? Play him and keep him good for WCQ. Don't play him and go into WCQ with no form

+1
Lochy was quality tonight.

When folk come up with comments like that, you suspect that they had made their mind up before a ball was kicked!

I know, I know, its serious!

Have to say, all the communication tonight was from Siggie and Dura. They kept tight and were talking the whole time after that first goal.

Nix are nothing to do with AW's. If you play someone just to get him in to form for another team that you coach then it is a conflict of interest. No coach would do such a thing and it's a ridiculous suggestion.

He might though

Great result and one we needed.

Good effort from the boys with some great signs and plenty to build on over the coming weeks... bluddy awesome crowd too - make sure you all come back and bring a couple of your lazy sooky-arse "oh no, I can't come to the Nix coz I might get wet and my nose might run!" mates with you too - they're missing out!!!

Well done

Just got home. Wooooo. Super stoked after that Bertos goal.

Ferrante letting that ball go through for their goal was so  bad. But other than that I felt like he did good.
Ifill showed that h really does have a lot of potential. And Diego looked good too.
I fact I think Lochhead was playing quite nice down that flank

A Leo Bertos thunderbolt inspired Wellington Phoenix to a 2-1 A-League triumph over an injury-cursed Perth Glory at Westpac Stadium on Sunday.

With scores locked at 1-1, Bertos unleashed an unbelievable 36-yard bullet that took the slightest deflection off Glory skipper Jacob Burns and thundered into the back of the net, sending the 10,024 crowd who had braved the rainy conditions into raptures.

But Bertos' 85th-minute winner was a cruel result for Perth, who had dominated proceedings in the second half and deserved to come away with the win, or a draw at the very least.

Twice in the second half Perth struck the crossbar before Bertos drove the dagger into his former side.

Glory, who started the match without key players Jamie Coyne (knee) and Jamie Harnwell (hamstring), were dealt a further blow when winger Victor Sikora and Chris Coyne limped off with injury before the half hour was up.

Sikora had given Perth a 1-0 lead in the third minute after stripping defender Michael Ferrante of the ball and calmly slotting past Mark Paston.

But Phoenix striker Paul Ifill levelled proceedings with a classy header in the 24th minute.

Glory 'keeper Tando Velaphi had earlier pulled off a superb diving save to keep out Ifill's powerful half-volley in the eighth minute but there was no stopping the Phoenix striker following a searching run and pin-point cross from Bertos.

Ifill's glancing header from six yards out left Velaphi with no time to react as the ball sailed over the custodian's head.

Phoenix defender Manny Muscat ensured the teams headed to half-time locked at 1-1 after clearing Todd Howarth's goalward-bound header off the line.

The Glory had chances galore in the second half as Howarth dominated down the left flank but the visitors struggled when it came to the finishing touch.

Substitute Andrija Jukic fired high from six yards out after a neat back heel from striker Branko Jelic, while Mile Sterjovski's header hit the crossbar after an excellent cross from Howarth.

Sterjovski was causing Wellington's defence all sorts of problems and the Glory hit the crossbar again in the 68th minute before the Phoenix finally launched an attack of their own, only for Adriano Pellegrino to clear Diego's header off the line.

But there was no stopping Bertos after he was crudely brought down by Pellegrino in the 84th minute.

With a packed penalty box in front of him, Bertos watched in wonder as his strike glanced off Burns and beat Velaphi's outstretched hand to give Wellington their first points of the season.

The Glory, meanwhile, have nothing to show for their opening two rounds after going down to Adelaide United 1-0 last week.
