Well whenever we knock the ball long to him aerially he has brought it down and laid it off quite well i thought. Seems to latch onto corners quite well too,and even scored one off his head.

Am honoured that your very first post on here is questioning me though

Poor attempt at trying to stir.  He's won a fair number of headers (including scoring off one) so jog on.

I like this line-up:
-----------Reddy------------
Hearfield--McKain--Durante--Muscat
----------Brown-------------
Bertos--------------------Caceras
-----------Ifill--------------
--------Dadi---Greenie----------

Wouldn't mind having Costa come on for Bertos if he's playing terribly.  Caceres is quality, his shirt is up to over $800 on that 'Come Play' bidding thing.

To be honest I think we should probably be focussing more on the defensive side of this game rather than our strikers. Melbourne away is probably the toughest fixture other than Sydney.

I would like to see Sigmund back into CB, hopefully to kill Kruse, then Mckain, Brown and Diego to pack the midfield, maybe have one of them man marking Hernandez. Have Ifill to play a free role in front of them and put Greeny and Dadi up front to play as long ball targets.

Although this would have absolutely no width and we would need to rely on hearfield or muscat to get forward to get crosses in. I think that playing Caceres or Bertos would severely weaken our defense and pressure through midfield, and this is probably a game where we will need to defend quite a bit.

Probably a bit too much of a FM10 formation, with the lack of wide midfielders, but I'm struggling to see how we will able to cope with the melbourne midfield if don't have more defensively inclined players.

So you want to start Diego, who has done bugger all this year over Bertos, Caceres and Daniel? You are advocating the creativity of Ifill for Dadi and Greenacre when Ifill is a shoot on site first, pass second player?

This formation has absolutely no width and no creativity at all. You've actually got to score to win a game, even just the one goal. This is defend, defend, defend and then kick it 40 yards, the very thing we don't want to do

I agree with GF that Siggy may need to slot back in to CB and McKain switch to midfield. Not that I like McKain in that role but we'll need some grunt there alongside Brown to replace Lia. Diego isn't much of a defender.

OK my formation. This is a big game for us.
                  Reddy

Troy     Dura    Mckain     Manny

            Brown   Deigo
Ifill                                    Leo
          Dadi       Greenacre

Dadi had one bad game and we need the height. The combination of greeny and Dadi could be vital and Deigo in there to ad some more attack in the middle of the park. Siggy  i didnt think had a great performance so on the bench for him. My only worry is that Dadi wont be able to handle a full game again. Caceres is unlucky again but maybe a 50th minute sub for Dadi?

Bench
Crowther
Siggy
Caceres
Babourouses or Daniel.

Hmm with Lia out this is gonna be interesting as to what Herbert does formation wise.

              Durante Sigmund
Hearfield                          Muscat

    Ifill                                Bertos

                    Greenacre

                      Dadi

we need to take the game to Melbourne as well as the need to be stable in defense.

I think the thinking behind retaining Muscat in the middle of the park instead of shifting him to fullback is to counter the threat of Carlos Hernandez.

I think its risky but smart by ricki. We really need to shut down Carlos. He is their key but we still need to worry about Archie and Kruse. But shutting down Hernandez is kay.

I think it does show alot of balls to play that formation. Kruse has fired since arriving in Melbourne so one could ask is it the player, or the system he plays in cause he was shyte elsewhere. Carlos is a fat turnip with an amazing boot. I don't think all 3 can be ignored so playing a back 3, and attacking 3 yet still crowding the middle is quite a move.

Will be interesting.

I like this. I'd start Caceres and bench Bertos, he played like crap against Perth and needs a refresh before the Adelaide game, this is Caceres' game to shine and I like that him and Ifill have two genuine strikers to aim for.

Siggy in the backline. I like it. Needs some game time to get back to the form he was in before that *insert expletive of choice here* threw his face into Siggy's fist.

Probably because Ricki is unlikely to play the keeper anywhere else but in goal.

I didn't hear anything of a 3 man backline either, a switch to 442 would be a change though, and seems more likely to me.

The more I think about the 3-5-3 the more I like it. Our three best defenders in Sigmund, Dura and McKain taking names at the back, Hearfield and Caceres/Bertos playing as wingers up and down the park (we know Hearfield can do that and Bertos did it for the All Whites) and then Manny & Brown to tie Hernandez up in the midfield and our three attacking weapons in Ifill Greenie and Dadi to create up front.

Do it Ricki, you know you want to.

Did the All Whites play Bahrain with 3-4-3 or 3-5-2?

I quite like that formation as long as the wingers can get back.  We could be very exposed.  I say start Caceres in place of Bertos.

Who else is one or two yellow cards away from a suspension?

Also should we play Crowther ahead of Reddy.  Reddy was really struggling the other week.  Even just walking it wasn't looking great, but the kicks he did were terrible.  If he's struggling that much then Crowther could be an option.  If he does play, though, our defenders shouldn't pass to him unless absolutely necessary.  A number of times they were under a bit of pressure with few options and so they passed to Reddy - they should have pulled a Jon McKain and hoofed it.

Reddy does look in trouble when he gets back passes/caught on the ball - I think Melbourne would try to exploit that but I still would rather have Reddy between the sticks than Crowther.  Defense just needs to be aware and available to bail Reddy out.

Exactly what I was thinking. Possibly Caceres in place of Leo, although I prefer Leo myself, as long as his delivery is up to scratch. Was awful in Perth.

Hopefully this talk of a back 3 is just hearsay. I don't think experimenting with your defence is a good idea away to Melbourne.

i wasn't convinced that experimenting with our defence was a great idea away (and home ) v Bahrain was a good idea

in Ricki I trust.

If it comes down to Leo or Caceres as a 'wing back' i reckon Leo would track back better,

though as an attacking option (despite their different styles) they seem fairly close at the mo, with Caceres perhaps having the edge.

Caceres is one of our best players.

Stack the midfield if we want to win.

I go to every Melb home game and the amount of times I see teams come and allow huge amounts of space between defence and midfield and get smashed is ridiculous. If you allow Hernandez room, you will probably lose. Angulo is classy as well and he will be starting - we need to muscle these 2 out of it. Angulo is very small so especially him.

Think we will miss Lia because of this. I don't think Manny is that great in the middle of the park. He looked good because he only had one thing to do - close down attackers - but without Lia he will have to move forward as well. I would actually have Diego in there.
