Leo   Siggy Durante   Lochead
                  Lia
Waffles                       Totori
         Sanchez Fenton
                Brockie
Possibly?

Fenton played pretty well in the middle against Heart, and 442 is just too much defensive work for Sanchez.

wow thats an attacking line up, will it work with long balls?

I hope we do go balls-to-the-wall attack, presuming that we'll lose 3-0 if we try to defend. Also a good thing that Manny's not around to break Minijudas's jaw. If he does that too often Marco might not want to play for NZ.

Contrary to popular belief we haven't actually been long balling it much at all lately. The reason we conceded against Brisbane because we were trying to pass it out from the back and Manny screwed up.

I'm not sure about that lineup - Brockie is not a CAM. Sanchez should be in there, Smith should be in the midfield and Brockie should be played in a front 2 with Stein.

Brockie will play just in behind Belgian striker Huysegems, with Totori and Fenton on the flanks and Sanchez partnering Lia in midfield.

Wow Ricki has gone nuts!
Is this a full gamble on a high press to interfere with their passing?
I really thought he would bring in Smith for Muscat and Lyndsay to the bench.

We need Smith in the middle of the park. END OF!

I would think Brockie will be more of a 2nd striker, rather than as a CM. Against the Heart he was winning quite a few flick ons but had no one in front to run onto them. If he can do similar, I think Waffles could benefit from it.

Yep, think it will be more like a 4-1-3-2 with Waffles playing off the last man than a 4-2-3-1.

Their defence has been poor, our defence has as well. This could be a 6-5 thriller.

If we can not concede early and hold the 0-0 for first 30 mins I can see this line up profiting on the counter with Totori and Fenton in midfield when victory start getting desperate and pushing midfield higher up. Then again we love starting 1-0 down

Its funny hearing exactly that. 'Ricki has gone nuts'. All the people who pick these stupid formations have gotten their wish - a stupid formation. They would be well advised to zip it till after the game then they can either crow (and I'll eat some pie) or crawl back under a rock.

It is bold and it is daring no doubt about it.

Could it work? Only if they starve Melbourne of the ball and lock up Marco and Archie tighter than a 16yo schoolgirls' honeypot. The front lot are going to have play the smooth passing football we are reknown for and retain it for very long periods of time. The Melbourne counter is swift and lethal.

Do I think it will? No. Not enough in the middle of the field to contain their attack and its asking our back two to find a turn of pace they do not have. If Durante and Sigmund sit high, this will be a very long night and there is not enough work rate at the pointy end of the pitch (or from Lia being a single defensive screen) to suggest they are going to play defense when it gets tough.

Still, we wait, we watch and we cheer regardless.

I think the idea is that Brockie is kind of a floating striker, who goes anywhere, like Ifill played sometimes.
I hope he's going to be helping Sanchez in the middle. A lot.
Also I'm not sure I've ever seen Huysegems win a ball in the air, and he hasn't had a shot in a long time. Seems crazy to put him up front.

I think it is bloody difficult to pick what will transpire in this game based on players/formation. What is intended can go out the door very easily. I doubt we will carelessly attack our arse off in this game. I just hope Marco doesnt celebrate if he scores..

Brockie might need to work a bit harder and get round the park a bit in this game. He peeves me off when he casually just stands around sometimes (unlike Boyd who is chomping at the bit to track players)

Sorry to contradict you but we did play long ball against the Roar...I counted 39 aerial balls in the second half alone. Paston longballed at least 90% of his clearances to half way.
Agree about the interesting formation....its quite novel and I guess we will see how it shakes down. We were on a hiding to nothing anyway so its great Ricki is having a go at trying something different.
Looks like Sanchez will be playing deeper. Lia will be the holding/screening midfielder and win ball that Sanchez can distribute. On paper a good idea. It addresses our major weakness....the slow inaccurate transition through midfield from  defense to attack. Sanchez is probably one of our best passers plus he has better vision and awareness.
The down side of this is who does he pass to? Unless Totori and Fenton tuck in more centrally to recieve then Sanchez is going to have to hit Brockie with a long pass( or Brockie could drop deep to recieve) Brockie does not strike me as a AM type.....he is often very static and drifts out of games at times.
Or maybe Ricki is planning to take a leaf out of Victories book and get Sanchez to slide wide balls through the Victory defense and use the pace of Fenton and Totori to run onto them like Thompson and Rojas. This requires a high degree of accuracy and coordination. THe Victory took months to perfect this style.
This could be a real helter skelter match with loads of goals.....can't wait. Ricki will be either hero or zero. Big pat on the back for trying something different though.

I agree. I've taken a punt but even then, I am not confident in that. Its just something so out of left-field from Ricki.

It does signal a major change in that the two wide men are not crossers and are better running with the ball at feet. Like you said with Sanchez and the slide balls, he has to hit Totori and Fenton at pace and they need to be making angular runs at the back line using Stein as a target/wall pass man to get in behind with a cut back to an oncoming Brockie. That would be magic to see.

If I were Ange, I'd use whom ever Lia is marking as a dummy runner all day and drag him out of position to expose the back two.

I don't think Ricki has a choice but to go for it. Trouble is I fear a hiding. Pack the defence and try to keep the score down won't work against Rojas and Thompson. Up front I worry that Totori is stopped too easily because he tries head down to beat players rather than passing and Huysegems is a one trick pony so a lot is going to rest on Brockie, who has a tendency to fade in and out of the game. This puts a lot of onus on Fenton but he doesn't have the guile of Rojas. Sanchez will need to play a blinder to pick open the Victory defence. I think Lochhead is going to be exposed for pace and Bertos is still not a complete back. Siggy and Durante are in for a torid evening.

It's going to be fascinating and I hope the result proves my fears unwarranted.

I hope Totori gets on the score sheet. I have a feeling once he has 1 he will get plenty. Although saying that I don't think I have ever seen him take a shot except against Sydney

Thats kinda what I am thinking. He needs to probably sit just high off the 18 back to goal (or at least not facing it) for this to happen and just spend his day sliding across either side showing for Totori and Fenton. He has the ability to hold it up and lay it off. Could be the best use of his skills.

Hold onto your hats this could be a wild ride. The options everyone have been  proposing could/might work. However they do require a high degree of skill and precision over 90 minutes. These are the sort of things you perfect preseason not for 3 days in 40+ degree heat. Still I would rather go down all guns blazing than just try and defend all game and get hammered.....could be carve up or carnage!!

I still think the key to the game will be how well we prevent the Victory midfield from sliding through balls to Rojas/Thompson....because if we can't they will tear us a new one!
