Hmm, maybe Ninja instead of Turtle. More complimentary.

dunno, was great at warming up, knew all the moves but was crap on the pitch. He was massive and strolled around like a bow-legged John Wayne would have been great a few years ago, lumbering about and getting the odd goal but the A league has changed.

I maintain Mehmet is worth signing. Judging him on half a game in a park not long after arriving in the country is probably too soon.

Same old, same old pre-season. Good solid nucleus of core players, and bench. But lacking a creative midfielder quality top A league class signing, and same for striker.
Mehmet wasn't on long enough to judge, and probably jetlagged. Did basic stuff OK. Didn't get any scoring opps.
Same with Sanchez. Clearly not over injury, or if he is, forget it. Failed to impose himself. Jury still out.
Downey was match standout. Pantelis very good when he came on. Matt Thurtell impressed as well. Pav was ok too. Rest fo regular A team solid for this workout, except Bertos who was average again, and Muscat whose distribution was out of sorts.

Apart from the goal and the two assists?

Sanchez looked OK I thought, however needs to get those shots in. Twice I've seen him play now, finds himself in good positions but can't hit the back of the net. Might have just been unlucky, might just lack that finishing class - hard to tell.

Greenacre came on as CM during the second half. Apart from one lapse when controlling a pass, looked good and was sighted with ball at feet distributing far more than Lia or Brown. Mehmet looked like he wanted a lot more ball to feet but we tended to use the wings a lot while he was on and the crossing wasn't great. Thurtell is quick and has a decent touch, not bad for a youngster.

Pantelis worked well with Lochead down the left. Downey is incredibly quick, has the ability to look like he is running full pace and then drop it down a gear and get even faster. Ifill looked OK in some plays, a little slow in others.

Towards the end of the second half we had four strikers on the field but could not score.

not sure mehmet has had enough chance to propperly show off what hes made of. Guess as a striker, you gotta score to prove your worth.

Sanchez has potential, but if he cant show for it then who knows what will happen. He clearly wants to be here, so I'm thinking he may end up being signed if we dont get a hold of that elusive european midfielder we've been hearing of.

If both signed, we'd be building an ex-SPL side, which seems to be a trend for the league. Also will have Killen in a year or two.

If Mehmet is good enough to be wanted by Hearts, he's good enough for us. Scottishbhoy2011-08-14 20:08:19

Old was wanted by Kilmarnock and not us..

SPL is not a good measure of quality. The lower tier of players in the SPL are just as bad if not worse than the a-League's (imo).

In saying that I think Mehmet is the best option we've got right now and Macallister was a bit of a donkey and still did a good job for us.

Doesn't Sanchez kind of sound like Toto mark II?

Old didn't exactly set the heather alight in the SPL though. Played only 10 games according to Wikipedia.

Mehmet has played in the SPL for over 5 years and the top league in Turkey for a couple now.

And as much as it pains me to say, Hearts are about 3rd best in Scotland (at the moment) so the fact he was signing for them surely proves something about his ability.

I am fairly certain Hearts would beat Phoenix, put it that way.

Fair points - hopefully he proves himself against Brisbane if he gets a go. Shouldn't be any excuses about jet lag then.

Yip, I hope he plays, and I hope we bring him into the play - i.e. ball into feet and he can hold it up. A bit of variety rather than the usual - pass out wide, cross...

this is why the signing of a creative midfielder should be of the utmost importance

I saw Hearts play a Europa League qualifier a couple of seasons ago, and though they were one of the worst professional European sides I'd ever seen. Don't think they'd stand out in the A-league by any means, not even sure they'd be a shoe-in for the playoffs.

In general, by European standards, the Scottish Premier League is pretty poor right now, including Rangers and Celtic (they'd both probably easily win the A-league though).

I thought the Wellington invitation 11 was well under the cosh for most of the game and couldn't really adjust to the higher speed and technical passing ability of the Phoenix. The Phoenix were stronger, faster and their ball retention statistics far out weighed the invitation 11s.  Having said that, in patches the invitation 11 were competitive and had a good couple of chances to score. Makes me think if they could play at that level on a regular basis at least some of them would eventually adjust and maybe excel.

I also thought playing at Weka was a good idea. The locals put in a real effort and a lot turned up. Ok you had to shuffle around the trees at times but it was all good.

Brilliant day out up the Coast.  Well played to KCU who put on a great show.  Pitch was in pretty good nick, no complaints from the players, and there was a good crowd in too.

Game was dominated by the Phoenix but you'd expect that.  Some of the Invite XI did well I thought and looked comfortable.  Locals will have enjoyed Cameron Manclark's cameo at right back (including chopping Pantelis and earning a yellow).

All in all a day that both the Phoenix and KCU will be very happy with I reckon.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

we thoroughly enjoyed our afternoon up the coast. I must admit i thought Downey had a good run out, although Leo and Tim maybe played just  abit too casually. Not too sure abouit the attack though. They appeared to be a bit lumbering and slow, although to be fair Pav did try to attack on most occassions

Great crowd.  I enjoyed the outing.

There was a young kid near where I was standing, chanting 'Come on Phoenix!' it was brilliant.

Just FYI Vinnie changed his boots at half time, not sure if anyone else noticed.
