well as games went I thought we were pretty crap from the first half odd formation with bertos as a spare part..thank god someone woke up at half time and changed things round..referee was a t**ser.  Does Tim Brown deserve a starting place...I think not

Brown starting place, did I miss something couldn't remember seeing him?

Tim Brown = MIA.

He's been missing all season. And if I ever see Troy Hearfield on the teamsheet again I might cry.

^^ this, Leo finally got a cross into the box, and the southerly headed it home!
Except it was a Northerly!

I think this is what may have fooled Bolton. He was kinda expecting a back wind in the 2nd half, but she was a swirler (You would have expected a back wind to hold Bertos's shot up, not make it curl more).

I know, I know, its serious!

exactly. If he goes on a solo mission, their midfielder comes across and he doesnt beat him, then hello massive coiunter-attack

This and the "blind alleys" comments are just talking utter bollocks. Bertos needs to get up field, even if only to get the ball out of his own half.

He barely makes it to halfway before he passes the ball backwards, and that only adds to the problems of defending with a 3-4-3 when the ball is always stuck with the back 3, and the other team has barely retreated to halfway.

Did you lot even pay attention to how much space Bertos had in front of him when he gets the ball off Paston? He quite often has a good 20-30m at least to get the ball moving forward before needing to do anything.

I'll back Bertos running with the ball every single time. If he gets caught out from time to time, then we deal with it. But sitting behind halfway and passing the ball backwards, we could put Mulligan on the field to do that role.

This is exactly one of the reasons why Hearfield turns over so much ball. He sees that 'clear space' in front of him, puts his head down and takes off. As he approaches the full back, the opposing centre midfielder slides across and suddenly he is in a narrow channel (or blind alley) with no support and a 1 v. 2 situation unable to play out as there is little support due to the 'clear space'. A winger needs to pick his moments.

If I ever see Hearfield with as much space open to him as what Leo has had in the last few games, I'd back him to have a run as well.

You can't stand around and hope that someone isn't going to try and tackle you for the ball, you can't waste counter-attack chances because you think you might get caught out if A,B,C,D,E,F or G happens.

The team might as well politely hand over the ball at halfway, because we'll never get out of our own end to do anything productive if they listened to the way you lot talk.

We have Bertos as an attacking player. He's on the field to provide ATTACKING options. Get it?

Hearfield has done OK when he's been played forwards also, sure he's not the greatest ball player in the world, but I have no problem with him wanting to run around players with his pace either.

The team wastes too much time worrying about what might be, instead of taking some actions to do something.

There's a reason the like of Melbourne, Adelaide, and Brisbane are so good on the counter attack, they get the ball up field in a hurry whenever they can.

Why can't we do the same? We have the players for it.

Ard Righ.  Totally agree with everything this guy says.

Look what happens when Leo finally starts attacking, stuff happens.

Agree, thought Leo played really well last night, especially when freed from the shackles of Ricki's failed 3 at the back experiment...

I didn't notice us changing away from 3 at the back? Looked to me that in the second half Manny, Siggy and Dura were playing the back 3?? Didn't look like a change of formation to me just a change in personell and attitude.

Hearfield was so, so bad.  Couldn't believe it.  Pavlovic to start next game in place of Hearfield with Ifill taking Hearfield's position and Pavlovic going up front with Greenacre.

Hearfield's improving with the more game time that he gets.

Went to a back four of Hearfield, Dura, Sugmund and Muscat.

I sincerely hope that is the one and only time we play three at the back - didn't look any more solid than it did in season one.
He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)

why... did Rikki swap NORTH for LIA?
WHY?
Yeah north wasn't having a good game.. but what would make him think that Lia would do a better job?
I'm sorry, but I have no faith in him.

Think it or not, Lia did. North was at least partly responsible for the bungle that let the second Yarraside goal in, while Lia made some crunching tackles and put some good balls forward.

Lia was quality I thought. Some good raking long balls, good tackles. Not quite as good as Manny in that role but not far off.

some people seem to think a player getting a square ball at the back and attempting to go on a coast to coast is called a counter attack.

Huh? Manny was playing full back. It makes no sense that we would pull Ward off, put Lia on so Manny can go full back then just stick to the same formation.

Leo got forward more not just because of a change in attitude but because Ricki lessened the defensive burden on him.

A couple of random observations about our defense this season so far.  It seems to me but we haven't really had a settled combination yet, due to injuries (Lochead) or player unavailibility (North). Additionally we've had 3 home games where the ground has been very slippery due to rain - (Yesterday, I actually wondered whether some of them had sandshoes on).  It did seem to affect the way they played - there was one instance I recall in the second half with the Heart on attack - they had the ball about 5 or so metres outside the penalty box and our defenders didn't come out to aggressively contest the ball carrier for what seemed like ages - it turned out OK - but they were dicing with death then.   So I'm hoping that we can settle on a combination and we can get some drier grounds soon.   Still patient and not panicking yet - it's a long season and am hoping it's a repeat of last year when we paced ourselves for a stretch run.

Also - how hard would it be to re-program the ticket booths to display whether a ticket that's just been scanned was a child's one or not?

Some poeple seem to think that passing the ball backwards and wasting good attacking opportunities is good football too.

But you can't please everyone.Ard Righ2010-10-18 23:19:03

Some people seem to think that passing the ball back when in front of you all you have is 5 opposition players is sh*t football.

Swings and roundabouts...

Some people assume thats what people are talking about. Its been said many times that what is being talked about is when he had about 30 yards of space in front of him,a clear run to the byline for a cross,he turned around and passed it back.

Perhaps he is uncomfortable in the position and was too worried about being caught out for going too far forward. Wingbacks should still be able to make such runs however, especially when he has the ability.
