For Immediate Release

PHOENIX RELEASE PAIR

Wellington

WELLINGTON Phoenix FC has released Brazilian imports George Paladini and Cleberson from their contracts.

Striker Paladini and defender Cleberson have played limited roles in the Phoenixs season to date and club management opted to release the pair from their contracts with immediate effect.

Phoenix chief executive Tony Pignata said the players contracts had been terminated by mutual agreement.

George and Cleberson are talented players but, unfortunately, the club does not see a role for them in our set-up in the long-term. Like all professional footballers they want to be playing regularly. We agreed that it was better to release the players from their contracts early to allow them to pursue other opportunities elsewhere.

....and frees up a couple of spots in the squad and some dosh for us in the transfer window. Good work.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

I see it as a great opportunity.  Both were on the outer and you'd assume on decent money so there may be some interesting opportunities available...

Shame it didn't work out. I enjoyed watching Cleberson play. He had a bit of character about him.

Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

I have a trial tomorrow morning, to fill in the right back slot - big night was planned for tonight, but I guess I'll cut it short at about midnight.

All I do is make the stuff I would've liked
Reference things I wanna watch, reference girls I wanna bite
Now I'm firefly like a burning kite
And yousa fake fuck like a fleshlight

Thought Cleberson looked promising in pre-season, but he's been going backwards ever since.

Sad to see them go but it will release some cash and two import spots as well. I'm thinking a centre back and a versitlile full back (left and right). Its sad to say but I hope  they're not kiwis so we have cover when the AW's are away. Im sure Ricki has a few players lined up.

Its no longer a problem.

Well that was somewhat unexpected, at least it's been an mutual decision on both the players and club.

Hopefully it'll prove to be a smart move, and allow us to find some tough blokes to help shore up the defence. I take it this late in the season we wouldn't be looking for more Brazilians?

cleberson should have been given a few more chances looked a lot better then o'dor.. such is football though im guessing cleberson was worth a bit more so they can spend more on the next guy

"Two Thumbs" George didn't really get any chances, the ones he did get were for about 15mins at a time and he seemed lively. But I trust Ricki and hope he uses these releases as spaces for 2 new defenders! *Prays to the heavens* "Dear God, please bring us an experienced centre-back and a trained right-back, Amen" shabba1212007-11-07 12:15:48

I was a big fan of George too, and Cleberson had great character.

Bring on the new players!

I don't know anything about ya man but I do know to be a success the Phoenix need good crowds attending the games and so far there doesn't seem to be many Asians amongst our numbers.
I think it might be a good idea for Ricki to look towards Asia rather than Brazil this time.

Very good call on Sir Rciki's part. clebo had to go, shame about George but to be fair he wasn't likely to get a look in with smeltz, Coveny and the other attacking guys we have in our team.

Queenslander 3x a year.

NOW is not the time to be thinking about marketing opportunities in different ethnic areas! The A-League is aimed at families, to encourage numbers, so thats what Terry and Tony have done and its worked. Now for the rest of the season we need to focus on winning games rather than crowds because the crowds will continue to grow as long as we keep winning.

This may free up a bit more cash come the end of Felipe's contract depending on how much is spent filling the spots left in the roster.

I wish them both the best in their future careers. Both were fantastic personalities and really nice guys.

Agreed Cleberson, didn't progress after the Melbourne game back in the day.

Now we can bring in Neil Emblem

Problem at the back is now solved and for free.

Ricki will be donning the boots and shirt once again!

I actually liked George, Judging on what field time he had, he looked lively and definately created a few goals. Still, They must have someone lined up if they wanted to free up the space. Nik Ward from QPR?
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

Which goals are you referring to?  For mind, he had very little impact and apart from a few nice flicks ahieved nothing and was given a few (albeit) substitute opportunities.

Tony P, When will you announce the new new player(s) - you must have someone lined up otherwise you wouldn't have released the players especially Cleberson (defender).

Well not necessarily, the transfer window isn't that long, plus every week they aren't playing and being paid means less money available under the cap for new players...

I can't wait until Ricki decides who is going to be the replacements.  I hope a couple of young kiwi's get a shot.

First game - cross came in from the left, George ran at the goaly and panicked him, keeper missed the cross and Shane (I think) had a free header.

Last game he played - goalmouth scramble, he was involved, ball broke and as he was about to hit it, Shane (again) pounced and buried it.

George defo played a part in his cameos - but it wasn't to be.  He'll be alright though.

Clebo will be back over to Brasil and see his kids no doubt - which should sort his head out.

I'm not sure you could count either of those as creating goals, especially when you look at the contribution of the two other guys, you're talking about a missed header and being present in a goal mouth scramble

For whatever reason the guy didn't fire, I think for both players and the club this is a good situation.  I think equally clear is that the guys who have settled best off the field are playing the best on the field

Just heard on the radio that they are not going to rush into signing new players and have all of November to sign replacements.

Ricki would not have released these guys without having other players in mind.

As far as I'm aware, to let a player go like that, the club has to pay out their contract, so this hasn't freed up any space on the cap and we will have to look for some cheaper players.

Maybe Ricki's trying to bend the arm of the FFA about Ziggy, the Knights were able to with Dean Gordon.

So our defender stocks could be low for the rest of Nov ( 3 more games after the Roar on Sun)?
What happens if O'dor gets his nose smashed up again - just Old left to replace.

I doubt that the Nix would stuff around, just probably putting out an image of caution
