Good luck for the future Steven, you are a great guy and we wish you all the best in both your studies and your football.

Good luck to him. I fully understand what he's doing. The best thing is he's so young. I think another two years in the VPL would do him good and he can come back to the A-League a better player.

Yeah good on him.  Gotta wonder if he should've waited and seen if the Phoenix axed him anyway though - then he could've got his contract paid out!

It's not like he has played that much on the back end of the season so i reckon it was a real possibility.

Good for both parties though, he wasn't really good enough as is and hopefully once he's done studiing he looks at the Phoenix because he definitely has the potential.
Opens up a spot for one of the defenders that have been bandied about for the club too.

I still think he has potential to be a decent defender. He has major weak points but he did get back and make a few goal or almost goal (in the case of Patafa's) saving tackles. On the other hand I don't think Old will get much better.

Good luck to him. He'll be back.

Good luck to him.

FYI -
ODor played 13 games for the Phoenix, adding to the four Hyundai A-League caps he gained with the New Zealand Knights in 2006/07.

Caps is a term used for international appearances.

Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

All the best to him for the future. Like some others on here, I reckon he has potential and with more experience could go on to be a good defender.

At least he can look back and say that he was part of making history!

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

I have never agreed with some of the criticism leveled at this young man. He has done his best for our club and we wish him the best for the future.

Did he jump before he was pushed? Guess we'll never know, but I certainly wish him all the best. Great defenders often don't hit their prime until they are in their late 20s, so Steven's got plenty of time to build on his A League experience.

He's made the wrong choice.  Fact.

Opinion, surely. Care to elaborate, Smithy?

Thanks for all the effort Steve. You sure do have a future in football, but now you have a choice, so fair enough. You always looked good wearing a collar and tie when you weren't playing too!

<!-- Start Member Post --> That's fair enough but surely he's made the right decision for him. It doesn't mean he'll give the game away completely, he's young enough to finish his studies and come back. . He'd have been gutted if he'd chucked the studying away then got injured and found he couldn't play again! I suppose he's just giving himself some security for the future

Like everyone else who loves the game, my first reaction was that he's mad but I think I can see why he's made the decision. Must have been a helluva tough choice to make.

Could've been worse, he could be studying to be an accountant!

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Sorry Smithy, my pisstake radar isn't working properly

I bet just about everybody on here would love to jack their job in to play footie. Sh*t choice to make but it must be nice to be in the position to make it!

I was talking to Costa before I left, and he said that he'd like to jack his job in and play footie

All I do is make the stuff I would've liked
Reference things I wanna watch, reference girls I wanna bite
Now I'm firefly like a burning kite
And yousa fake fuck like a fleshlight

Good luck. Have never questioned your commitment. Get the study done, keep playing and then see where the future lies.

he started well, but seemed to loose confidence when played out wide in our first game v Mariners,

he looked comfortable on the ball and got his head up when in possession, for me he needs to get physically stronger to hold down a career as a centre back

all the best to him with his studies and football, as said it must have been a tough decision (even if he could see the writing on the wall)

Good luck to you ...pity about the last photo on the WPFC website though... Was that just before the dive crawl after the striker?  or prior to the wisdom teeth coming out? or seconds after the first broken nose? Thanks for the commitment.

I'm going to put up a nice photo.

That's better.

He's got pace and you can't coach that.  ANyone who can run down Archie Thompson has a future in my book.  I think both him and Steven Old suffered because both of them were there, add another decent pro for one of them to learn their trade off and that one might have gone allright.

Interesting Fred suggests he was in next years plans.  Does that mean the balance will change or that someone else is set for the chop, perhaps Mr Rees?

He was standing far too square when getting run at by Archie.

Dont think he was in plans and neither is Rees

I think Rees was more a gap filler when Clebo got the chop, who knows things could change since O'Dor is leaving.

have to agree about it being a questionable choice.. plenty of time for uni after your used by date in football. A lot easier to get a degree then be a pro footy player. I'm doing the same degree, ill swap my spot at vic with your spot steve.. rodfarva2008-01-18 13:09:26

Are you a half decent defender? Ricki could be interested.

Nice raps from all the fans toward Steven.

He gave his blood to the Phoenix cause...what was it? two broken noses.

He has the potential to be a very good A-League defender.Just needs a few more years. Was just unlucky to be playing in an inexperianced defense this year.
Hope he leaves with some fond memories of the Phoenix's first season.
