OMG Stadium - this weeks scapegoat.

Hi all,
A lot of people are commenting over here how good the stadium looked tonight, it was like watching a Serie B game from Italy! It was much more of a 'European' style stadium, with the supporters more 'compressed' in that at your normal home ground.

The commentators seemed to harp on about the wind, and I know this stadium is out of town for you guys, but yeah, there are a lot of comments here about the stadium, and everyone seemed to enjoy it.

Just some food for thought.

sh*t stadium, sh*t town, sh*t result.

Botafogo - Rio de Janeiro and Wellington Phoenix, my two teams til death do us part.

It reminded me of the Stadium in (Attenborough's?) 'Cry Freedom'. That's where the similarity ended because I would have preferred to watch South African Football in the the 70s/80s than the pile of sh*te I witnessed last night.

I'm glad it looked nice on TV because being there was awful.

That's what I imagine football grounds in Eastern Europe to look like. Rickety old seating, dirt track round the pitch, high wire fences. All that was missing was the police turning up in armoured vehicles to blast us all with water cannons. And that would have been a more pleasant experience.

Was standing on top of the red bench tiered seats in YF. Was a tad worried about us scoring. Had we scored, I'm sure any celebration would have caused it to collapse. Only positive in that is that it was only five tiers high, so not far to fall- just an inconvenience for a couple of minutes.

But in all honesty, all good to take the game to Palmy, but I'd say not again. Most importantly the players lose that 'home advantage'. Secondly, the stadium really is sh*t, and pretty tough to build the atmosphere in. Lastly, Palmy is a hole. Although interested to see how it goes in Christchurch, it's not the RoF.

However I will say, the halftime competition of winning a car for a weekend is one lol of an idea.

It is, I moved away from Chch 3 years ago, however at least they'll supply a class stadium.

Agree with Diego's son's comment: it really did look like a Serie B stadium (and I know something about it, trust me)! It was good fun but yeah we did lose a bit of that 'home advantage' feeling.
But we truly played an average game and there's not much complaining we can do. It just pisses me off that we created a lot more than Sydney and yet we didn't even snatch a draw. pity!
Palmy is a hole, all right!
Hope the ChCh game will be a bit better. But you have to say, it was a good effort by the locals (and Wellingtonians alike). Many of us made the trip to Palmy, but there were a lot of people who didn't look like fans, but who had still gone to the game.

One thing I totally hated: Smoking was allowed in the stadium. To me that's pretty bad (maybe it's because we had a chain smoker sitting a couple of seats to the right of the fever zone who literally gave me cancer..

, good call.
Lets blame everything else on the loss, expect the fact that we had crap tactics for the conditions and played like it.

ground looked in good condition -  just the actual stands were sh*te, unless you were in the actual grandstand you wouldn't have seen everything. Bloody wire fences infront of you,I hope we never have to go back there EVER!!!!!

Firts time ive been to Palmerston....and last time
The ground was sh*te..couldnt see much of the football from the far end. The open end of the park ...well could give wellington a lesson in being windy(that and the redneck I was stood by)  didnt think it did anything for the game of football being played there and can we please not do it again. Im sure that the Westpac could have put off returfing the pitch or whatever they were doing for one more week

I loved it.  Just back in from a HUGE night with a massive hangover.  Assorted Fever breakfast at Cuba Cafe laughing at the degree of hangover/still boozedness. the Speights Ale House, and distubingly don't hate the Palm.

I guess I know the ground so it wasn't a great culture shock for me, but in the end rolling back in to our motel at 4:30 we rated it a good night out, one of the best ever following a Phoenix loss.

The ground was a piece of crap, but it was a good atmosphere with everyone so close together and standing on the seats.

It would've been great if we had actually scored, could have been mayhem.

It reminded me of Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk's old stadium in Ukraine (went to a UEFA cup tie there in 2005)!

Didn't mind Palmy to be fair, good to go to some different boozers for a change.

The problem for me was the stadium was less than conducive for atmosphere. The acoustics at OMG Stadium aren't too good - no roof to reflect sound towards the pitch, further from the pitch so any sound we make dissipated more etc. Someone at the match (think it was petermcc) told me from the other side of the stadium we sounded quiet. This also probably explained why the bloke I shall refer to as Tui Santa came over seeking "the ringleader", asking us to raise the volume. I imagine that the sound dissipation made it harder to the locals to get into the mood, or even hear what we were saying, and thus prevented them from getting an accurate impression of what a Nix match is like (thus taking away from the promotional aspect).  It also would have taken away a lot of the atmosphere for the players, and thus taken away what little home advantage we hadn't already lost by not being at the RoF.

Also the cage, Dick Smith speakers and chain smokers didn't help either.

That being said (and ignoring the result) I had a great day and certainly wouldn't mind the rare "home" road trip again in the future (so long as it were the exception rather than the rule).  Bring on Lancaster Park.

Which motel did you stay at?

Shadzz?

Or Illuzzions maybe?

Palmerston North - where a motel's class is measured by the number of z's in the name.

+1

Yeah it was a crappy result and a bit of a crappy stadium, but I enjoyed the whole thing and I think the amount of us who turned up was brilliant, I got talking sh*te to lots of people I don't normally do, so it was cool.

The lesson I've learned is not to drink so much red wine before the match in our motel room.

It didn't help that I carried with me the worst hangover of my life but last night was horrible. That place is an utter disgrace, that Stadium is horrendous. Standing up the back on those red "bleachers" had me concerned if we had scored a goal, it was cold, it was windy, there was a f**king wire fence in front of me, the people at the stadium were sh*t and completely unhelpful, we played like f**king bollocks and it was Palmerston North. I really hope the club don't have to go back there, go to Hamilton (where at least you will get a decent Stadium) or Chch sure but never back to that place.

The whole thing was perhaps best summed up for me by Paulinho looking at me as we sat at Burger King (after waiting in a cue for half an hour, hearing bogans abuse the staff) and saying "Please Benj, please can we just go home! I want to get out of here"
But credit to the Fever for sorting out the Ale House, that was the highlight of an otherwise horrendous day, well that and the owl puns on the way home.

Yeah, but it wasn't from the other side of the stadium.

I couldn't hear the fever from 30 or 40 meters away, probably made worse by the wind carrying the noise away.
