Can't be @rsed looking through the various threads.  Back from oop north and tired and not a happy camper.
 
First time watching a game at FMG and do hope it's the last.  The pitch was not much bigger than the Narinville artificial turf and speedway fence made me think of the Blues Brothers playing behind chicken wire.
 
sat midway amongst the staunch but silent Palmy-ites (a few wags making amusing comments but everyone looking blank and bemused at the Fever) - although in fairness not too much to shout about.
 
Next time I'll just stick to the home and garden shows they have there.

But credit to the Fever for sorting out the Ale House, that was the highlight of an otherwise horrendous day, well that and the owl puns on the way home.

Owlcatraz is for sale; new fever investment?

I echo HN that it was a fun roadie and a good idea to do something new.
 
my main concern is that by playing home games away from teh ring of fire, we are jeopardising points that in our position we can't be giving away. I understand the idea of spreading the game/fan base, but the side had to play a virtual away game in front of a smallish crowd...not the best footballing environment to play one of the best sides in the league.  For that reason I would question whether it should be done again next year.

Yes... brassed off the Nix lost on Saturday
 but enjoyed the change of environment, great pub the Speights Ale House (with free beer for starters!), fantastic to see all you beautiful people up there too, awesome to be a part of the YF Travelling Army.
True, not the fanciest stadium the FMG,  but if the Nix had won there,there wouldn't be half the grumbling there's been on the forums.In fact, because FMG is so small it actually felt like a larger crowd.
Of course its natural enough for us to be pissed off when the Nix have lost, but lets not take it out on Palmerston North,their stadium and, by default, those loyal YF supporters from the region who make the trek to the RoF every other home game too.
It has certainly made me appreciate the RoF a whole lot more. We are very lucky to have such a good venue.

Thanks for having us, you lot. Sorry to be a bunch of grumblers. See you on the 9th Jan, large!

you obviosuly haven't actually read or considered what I wrote. It was a statement about playing GAMES AWAY FROM HOME NEXT YEAR, AS WE HAVE DONE IN PALMY AND CHCH THIS YEAR.
 
I would suggest to you that this was part of a wider marketing strategy to promote the Phoenix by playing games away from Wellington, LIKE THEY DO IN PRE-SEASON.  NOT JUST A MOVE BECAUSE THE GROUND WAS OUT OF ACTION.
 
My opinion, is THIS IS NOT GOOD FOR THE SIDE/PERFORMANCES.

Perhaps two key suspensions and a significnat injury blow to the team also contributed? 
 
I think the new ground was a factor but those bling chaps also played on the same ground (at the same time) and manged OK.

My point is that they don't seem to have a choice.  It's not like they decided to do this on a lark.  If the stadium is unavailable next year (for whatever reason) then the club will have to take it out of town again.  Your post makes it sound like it was the Phoenix decision to do this.

....and his point might just have been that, strangely, the dates for the games in Palmy and Christchurch just happened to coincide with days when the ROF isn't available. I haven't seen anything, anywhere to suggest that the Nix are planning to play more "home" games outside Wellington.
 
I would suggest that if the Nix decide to take a home league game 'on the road' when there is no reason for them not to play it at the ROF, then your argument re the marketing strategy may have a bit more substance.

While the ground was sh*te, it had nothing to do with the performance which was abject because of the players' (in)ability that night.

A more likely relationship would be the size of Palmy folk and the portions served up at their local boozers! That's the first time in my life i have waived away wedges and sour cream before i finished it - Nice one SAH!

It was probably an   " okay, no stadium, so, how do we turn a negative into a positive?" exercise in reality.

I admit I hadn't thought about it in that way, in which case the decision is more understandable.
 
The most positive part of the trip wasl the discovery that Owlcatraz is for sale; now that is an investment worth getting in on.

it looked awful on telly (admittedly, i was not in my most observant state by that stage). the wind seemed to completely ruin the match (fark it looked windy!) and the tv cameras were really low - I remember that (kind of).

Must say I didnt enjoy it and neither did the wife. if you are in the wrong position you get chicken wire or a dirty great light tower in front of you. Why would they put those in front of the seating?!
Not to mention the locals...
We asked probably 6 staff around the ground where was the wheelchair seating. None of them knew of any thing about it. We found it ourselves at half time and even then the thoroughfare is infront of the seating...
Sh#t ground, Sh#t town, Sh#t game...
Not a bad curry place however, and i did enjoy seeing all the YF taking over the town.

At least the ground looked reasonably full.... in welly theres no uses trumpeting on about a fancy stadium when there are 6x more empty yellow  seats than spectators...

After being at FMG one really appreciates just what the Cake Tin has to offer and why Wellington is so proud of the stadium.

What do others think of the facilities at FMG?

Personally I was unimpressed by the wire - we don't need this in NZ. The stadium was too open while the seating left something to be desired. I would have preferred going to Napier where the ground facilities are better.

The wire is there to stop wheels coming out, not the fans getting in.  It's a Speedway track at this time of year, not a football ground.

As for Napier, i'm sure NZ cricket wouldn't have minded a game of football in the middle of a test match.

They would have played at Yarrow though, Kingz did.  Got spanked by the old Adelaide City Force.

FMG is classic Palmy, I mean us locals are so happy to have a reason to go out. We don't care what it's like when you get there.... its a crappy old stadium!
 
Lets face it, you go to Palmy to visit people not for much else. (stock cars and university graduations perhaps)
 
best bits were : not having to listen to Dewhurst on the radio on the way home from Welly, getting given a cardboard box to put ya beers in, cheap beers, heaps of parking, and a quick trip home.
 
surely they could have taken the wire down for the game...

I'm still not convinced about the angst about the wire.  If we'd have scored we'd have all been hanging off it in seconds.

I also imagine that if people demanded the wire went venue costs would have gone up as it all has to be back up for the meeting there on boxing day, as well as the effort to get it down.
