just watching the newcastle game and pastons punched a few balls he could've caught, any ideas to why that is?

saw him do it last week against the cantral coast, could ve caught a easy ball, under no pressure, and he punched it out for a corner! he's doing the same this game!

a keeper playing at that level should at least be able to catch a ball when it comes straight at him

Pston's punching has been more accurate than our midfield passing. Least of worries.

Mark Paston is a rubbish goalkeeper...a keeper at this level should at least be able to catch a ball....still probably fits in well with how the rest of the team are playing

It worked one game where he punched about 10 balls (sounds wrong) very well and ever since then he's been trying it more often. Doing it every now and then is fine but every corner is a bit much..

yeah, dont get me wrong, if you have no other option punch the thing out, but if its catchable, why doesnt he catch it and keep possession?

Reminds me of suppressed hilarity in the commentary box at the World Cup when Miles Davis declared that he "preferred double fisting" from Paston.

Hangover from the Jubilani ball at the WC?  Keepers were chosing to punch instead of try and catch the fly away ball...

It's a personal preference obviously but a real annoyance as it has become more a part of his normal game rather than only happening when it is warranted.

1. Punching is a good option when there are problems handling the ball ie: wind, rain, can't quite reach the ball etc
2. There is really zero accuracy in getting the ball where you want it to go.
3. Personally I think it shows a lack of confidence, I was always told that if you can touch it, you can catch it. Not actually true but it developed a mindset.

This annoys me greatly also. And I wouldn't blame it on Gould.

It is the least of our problems at the moment, dont know why,  apart from people being angsty about last night, that it is mentionable.

As long as he punches it out from goal, it is a legimatimate defensive move.

What do you base that on then?

SB, for a start the ball would have to be kicked at you [as in a game situation].

I take it that both SB and 2nd best play goalkeeper and regularly punch the ball as a means of productive ball distribution, to be able to dispute what I say with any kind of authority.

I suppose the accuracy of my statement is best measured in the context that punching was first raised here - how accurate is Paston at it?

Then ask yourself the question, would the team be better off with him punching it or catching it?

And 2nd Best, you are a terribly witty fellow but as the majority of us aren't blessed with those same qualities. Might have been better to actually say what you meant in the first place rather than force us very busy people into needless written correspondence.

Out of interest, how many people that have commented on this topic are actually goalkeepers themselves? 2ndBest is the only one I know of.

The aim of puching is to get the ball away from a dangerous area so of course it is never going to be as good as catching and throwing as a means of 'productive ball distrubtion'.

But to say puching has zero accuracy is a massive yarn.  If that was true then you'd have keepers puching the ball into their own net.

And answer me this: has the opposition ever scores (or looked liked scoring for that matter) soon after he has punched the ball?  I'm inclined to say no.  Therefore its hardly an issue.  I'd much rather him continue to punch clear and try catch them and have an increased chance of dropping it.

yes i have no complaints with that, if you have to, punch the ball clear, but its not a good habit to get into if your punching the ball away all the time

For me there are some times where it looks like he would be better at catching it but it isn't that often. I was told by a number of coaches its more about committing about what you have decided to do. If your unsure that your going to be able to catch it cleanly then its better to punch it clear than spill it in the box at the strikers feet. As long as the punches are going clear then its not a huge issue is it?

Wasn't too long ago that all the teeth gnashing and angst was about how Paston never came for crosses and didn't dominate the box. Now he's getting flak for coming for crosses and punching them.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

as a keeper myself - nothing close to central league - I must admit I find some of Paston's punching rather unnerving. I'm not sure if I'd do anything different but he very rarely seems to dominate his 6 yard box. I can't reacll him doing it last year either, but I'd like to see him get of the ground when the ball is crossed and rip it from the air and control it. Rather than flailing at it with an innaccurate punch, which of late he seems to be relying on.

No not a huge issue, but personally, i believe that if the majority of his decisions are to commit to a punch, when a catch would be comfortable, then he is either lacking in the confidence to catch the ball more often than not (not a good sign for a solid keeper) or he has got in a nasty habit.

Both of those options have their own problems. Lacking in confidence for a keeper.. not good, as who's going to marshall the troops at the back, could this be why the defense is a bit skittish?

If he's in a nasty habit, then potentially (not ever time) we're missing out on an opportunity to ensure we can restart with possesion, rather than the ball becoming a 50/50 ball, which most times so far has lead to us being right back under pressure again until a goalkick occurs.

I dont believe he does this now.

Does he dominate the box? No. He should though, he's a monster sized man and should have no problems imposing himself in set pieces and crosses.

Does he look comfortable taking the balls in the air.. No. And when he does go for them, more times than not he'll opt for a punch, instead of having the confidence to take the ball.

Yes if he spills it at the feet, there'll be hell to pay, but guess what, he's the countries #1 keeper (based on the fact he's the #1 All Whites keeper). He should have the confidence to own the ball. He SHOULD have the confidence to dominate the box.

But it's not there.

I love ya Paston, i do, but i think it's time for Vuko to take over the gloves.

I don't see why he is AW #1 still, Moss is better (IMO and form) and younger

No attacking player wants a goalie's fist flying over there shoulder near their head and this can be used to intimidate.

Is Paston intimidating?

If you don't think Pasty dominates his box then you obviously haven't seen  Petkovic play this year. 2ndBest2010-11-22 14:38:30

As somebody else rightly pointed , Paston isn't the problem. He's probably the least of our problems at the moment.
