from the link - "The club has sport's most passionate fans in the Yellow Fever and a Phoenix home game is an unrivalled entertainment experience. We believe TAB Sport can add even more to that experience."

Have they added to that by adding new betting options? There seem to be a few extra now but I may be wrong...

Must thank TAB today for providing me with $65 for my bet on 3-1, a free pint in Grand, and some hotties to look at before and during the game.

Thought the 'stolen credit card' promo was a little corny but actually pretty cool. Kudos TAB

Please explain?

They said on twitter they had "found" the TAB CC at the Grand but never mentioned it had been lost/stolen? Was this something at the ground? Did they ask patrons to watch out for it?

Every 5 minutes it seemed they put on the bigscreen that the TAB credit card had been lost, and could it be returned etc. During breaks the announcer said it too, and after the game.

The TAB got some massive advertising out of that game.

From halftime onwards there were announcements that the TAB company credit card had been lost, and asking if people could please look around in their seats and report to security if they found it. There was a message on the screen saying the same thing and they were making it clear that they weren't joking.

Then following the game there were several people handing out flyers along the lines of "wooh we found the TAB company credit card, free beer and bbq at The Grand!" The flyers were made to look very hastily prepared and they had a big sign saying the same thing.

Like a said, a little corny, but also pretty clever imo.

Got one of the free betting slips they were handing before the game. Ifill for first Nix scorer. $5 @ 4.50. A nice haul of $22.50.

Nice bro! Was it only $5?

200 season members got $10. So others were given vouchers too?

What a game for you

Welcome aboard TAB.

Wellington Phoenix FC has secured a new partnership with national sports betting agency TAB Sport that will help assist the club in enhancing its profile throughout New Zealand.
The partnership will see TAB Sport's logo featured on the sleeve of the Phoenix's playing strips and training gear, starting with this Sunday's home match against Melbourne Heart at Westpac Stadium in Wellington.
It will continue the following two Hyundai A-League seasons, with a range of exciting initiatives planned by the club and TAB Sport.
Wellington Phoenix FC Chairman Rob Morrison said the partnership was another strong vote of confidence in the club and would help the Phoenix further strengthen its ambition of growing and developing support for and interest in its brand and football nationwide.

Don't like at all.

SkyCity sponsoring the Breakers and TAB sponsoring the 'Nix. Encouraging gambling. Might help us break even, but I'm not sure Mr Morgan and friends if it is worth the negative externalities. Not a family friendly sponsorship. Hope they f*n paid through the nose for it- cos a spot on our playing strip better be worth its pieces of silver.

Im just thankful that we haven't sold the naming rights to our team like Sky City Breakers and Vodafone Warriors.  Sony Wellington Phoenix just doesn't have the same ring as the Wellington Phoenix.

But thanks Sony for your continued support of our team.

Oh come on. Sports betting and going down the pokies every night spending your life savings are 2 different things.

Like it or not, sport, gambling, and beer are all inexorably linked (we are also sponsored by a beer company). This website even has TAB as a sponsor!

Additionally, the exposure of sports gambling here is absolutely nothing compared to the likes of the UK where there are about 100 different bookies all going head-to-head and sponsoring everything that moves! Not sure problem gambling is a HUGE deal there? I am sure it's a problem for some, but for everyone else it's no problem, just like everything else.

At the risk of going all wowser on you it does sit uneasily with me too.

Many years back - probably before you had your first neeps and tatties tobacco sponsorship was the big thing for NZ sport (and globally too).

I put gambling and alcohol in a category not too dissimilar to tobacco.

Anyway for the record I have tried smoking, betting and drinking (I suck at all of them).

Well at least we know gambling isn't going to kill you. Not directly at least...(the 'mob' coming round to 'settle your debt' doesnt count...).

I remember tobacco being a lot more heavily sponsored than it is now, F1 racing leading the way.

I think SPORTS betting is quite different from pokies and the like, and I think the demographic of each is also different.

Additionally, I won my bets yesterday, hence I am all for it!

Well I don't know all the ins and outs of the gambling spectrum but isn't that like saying speed is different from lsd, or DB Draught is different from Lion Brown?

I'm very glad I bought a Stripey before the TAB jumped on, so that I do not have to advertise gambling when I show my Phoenix pride.

Wow that's a good point. Will it make the replicas?

I'm guessing it will make the replicas, in the next batch to get made. My 09 Stripey has the Wellington Beds logo on it.

I just find it a bit interesting:

Tobacco sponsorship is right out these days.
Gambling sponsorship I am uneasy about (would probably still wear it)
Alcohol sponsorship I'm not too fussed about.

Varying levels of hypocrisy or a sliding scale of social acceptability for convenience?

Is this the first "major" sports team with TAB NZ backing and a place on the jersey?

Dunno - I don't really care about other NZ sports teams.

Edit: That's not quite true. I care about a WKAFC Junior Grade 12 team in the coming season.

Reality is NZ Football will have been getting a reasonable wedge from the TAB for years as they pay a percentage on all sports betting to the sports governing body

I see no issue with this whatsoever, the TAB live for sport they have to be the best marketing tool the Nix could have right now - they bring hot girls to the game, as a sponsor they'll be talking about it on their shows it's perfect for the nix.

I get what you mean, and can see some positives. The trouble for me is that gambling is a major societal problem- not everyone dies form fags or booze, but it's become socially unacceptable almost everywhere. Is gambling going to go the same way?
I guess on balance I would rather TAB profits went to the Nix if they've got to go to any sport......

Nostalgia isnt what it used to be...........

The TAB is more preferable than grants from the likes of Trillion Trust, and yes I know they are not supposed to be for professional teams, but the money generated from Pokies probably has a worse effect on communities than the TAB

at the end of the day we are a professional sports team that needs sponsors, it's not our responsibility to be the moral guide on how people spend their money. Having workied in the TAB call centre many years ago I know exactly how tough it can be listening to people bet their christmas funds on a speculator - but that's their choice, noone is forcing them to gamble, drink, smoke etc.
