Yes, it's Sunday afternoon and I'm bored.

With all the recent discussion about coaching appointments, the Welnix "Moneyball" approach (ahem) etc I started wondering "who actually works for the Phoenix and what is the structure?".

Here's what's on the Phoenix website at the moment:

General Manager: David Dome
Executive Assistant: Lynsey Greenacre
Head of Commercial Operations: Alex Brandon
Head of Marketing: TBC
Events and Ticketing Manager: Lizzie Cummings
Football Operations Manager: Mal Impiombato
Media Manager: Russell Gray
Head of Commercial Operations: TBC. All enquiries to David Dome (not sure why this is listed twice?)
Sponsorship Account Manager: TBC. All enquiries to David Dome

Head Coach: Ricki Herbert

The website also still lists Lee Taylor as the Strength & Conditioning Coach but we already know that's wrong and the job was recently advertised. It's also common knowledge that Jonathan Gould is back as Goalkeeping Coach and the Nix are recruiting an Assistant Coach and an Academy Coach, with Chris Greenacre tipped to get one of those.

This recent piece on Stuff also confirms:

Stuff wrote:
The Phoenix begin pre-season training next week and have lured back well-credentialed Englishman Ed Baranowski to head up their medical team.

Baranowski, who had a previous stint as the Phoenix's strength and conditioning coach, will take on the role of sports science manager.

Wayne Roberts will remain as physio but the Phoenix are hunting for a new strength and conditioning coach with Lee Taylor having returned to England for family reasons.

http://www.stuff.co.nz/dominion-post/sport/phoenix/7140869/Keeper-tops-intake-to-Phoenix-talent-school

There was also a Financial Controller role recently advertised which directed applications to Neil Hammond, Commercial Executive. A search of LinkedIn confirms someone called Neil Hammond has been in that role for 1 month. Not sure if this is a new role or perhaps one of the Head of Marketing or Sponsorship Account Manager roles from above under a different name.

So putting all of that together the Nix structure looks something like:

General Manager: David Dome

Executive Assistant: Lynsey Greenacre

Head of Commercial Operations: Alex Brandon

Commercial Executive: Neil Hammond

Financial Controller: TBC

Head of Marketing: TBC?

Sponsorship Account Manager: TBC?

Events and Ticketing Manager: Lizzie Cummings

Media Manager: Russell Gray

Football Operations Manager: Mal Impiombato

Head Coach: Ricki Herbert

Assistant Coach: TBC

Academy Coach: TBC

Goalkeeping Coach: Jonathan Gould

Sports Science Manager: Ed Baranowski

Strength and Conditioning Coach: TBC

Physiotherapist: Wayne Roberts

Does anybody know of any other positions that exist or any corrections to above? Do the Nix Nine have plans to recruit in other areas such as match analysis?

This is obviously a big step ahead from last season, but I'd also be interested to know how this compares to the set-up at the height of Terry's reign, and to other A-League clubs.

Should 'Marketing' say TBC or can we consider that part of the backroom operations outsourced now that Clemenger BBDO are on board?

over 13 years ago · edited over 13 years ago

Scratch Alex Brandon.  He's back in Melbin now.

over 13 years ago · edited over 13 years ago

Ferk me...16 back room positions. Never realised that keeping 11 guys on a football pitch needed so many suits.

Why? He was only appointed at the end of March at the same time as David Dome.

So has Head of Commercial Operations become a vacant position, or is that who Neil Hammond replaced? (under a different role name).

He was only here on a short term contract to help get some things in place.

Not sure if maintaining those processes is Neil's ownership or if they are looking for someone else.

So I wonder to what extent the commercial/marketing roles and finance roles have now been outsourced to Clemengers and Deloitte respectively.

FFA website wrote:
This partnership will see Deloitte have responsibility for the club’s accountancy requirements, not only in the day-to-day financial management, but also assisting with some strategic accountancy advice and data analytics. As part of the relationship, Deloitte will embed one of their staff into the organisation.

Will the Deloitte staff member basically be filling the vacant Finanical Controller position, or will they report to the yet-to-be-appointed Financial Controller?

We can add a part-time Community Development Officer to the list.

FFA website wrote:
The Wellington Phoenix announced today that it has appointed a Community Development Officer.

The role, which will be responsible for delivering the Club’s community interaction plan, will be shared with a communications role at Capital Football in an initiative that will be a first for both organisations.

The Community Development Officer will work within the Club organising player appearances, coaching clinics and charity support, as well as a variety of Club support initiatives. Importantly it will allow a greater integration of local football projects within the Phoenix’s own community interaction plan.

...

The role will be filled by Alida Shanks, currently Football Development Administrator at Capital Football.

Also interesting that the Assistant Coach and Academy Coach roles have now been officially rolled into one.

I hope she does her best to stamp out the blatant cheating that mars our sport and attracts the lowest common denominator.

No pressure Alida.

KYLA LANGE APPOINTED AS HEAD OF MARKETING

The Wellington Phoenix are pleased to announce the appointment of Kyla Lange to the position of Head of Marketing.

Lange brings a wealth of sporting experience with her. She has previously held roles including Marketing Manager with the Waikato Rugby and Chiefs Super Rugby franchise, Match Manager with Rugby New Zealand 2011, and most recently, as General Manager of the Haier Pulse netball franchise.

Phoenix General Manager David Dome says the appointment of Lange is an important addition to the Phoenix management team and signals that the Club is keen on investing in people both on and off the field.

“We are extremely pleased that Kyla has agreed to join us at the Phoenix and we believe that her appointment will enable the continued growth of the Club off the field.

“Her sporting experience is exceptional and she brings a wealth of knowledge across a number of sporting codes which will all be extremely valuable

“Kyla has a proven track record in sports management and is well respected throughout the country for her knowledge  and abilities.

“It’s a bit of a coup to get someone of Kyla’s ability and we’re extremely pleased she has agreed to join the Club”

Lange says that joining the Phoenix is an opportunity she is looking forward to with enthusiasm.

“Both on and off the field, the Wellington Phoenix continue to challenge  the traditions of professional sport

“I am hugely excited at the opportunity to be involved with the Club. From the fans to the Board, the passion that everyone involved has for the Club is obvious. I’m thrilled to be a part of the Club’s vision to build a quality sporting franchise in my home city of Wellington.”

 Lange’s appointment is effective immediately.

Not even our potential golden boot winner that we recruited?

Just because his goals didn't get us into the playoffs doesn't mean that he wasn't better than any other signing we have made this season. But meh, I don't care. Have fun having a go at all of our players at every chance possible.

Does Hernandez count? I'd rate him above Brockie or Thundersticks lady.

And actually personally, looking long term, I think Moss was a better signing than Brockie as well.

So will Thunderstick lady be taking over everything that Clemengers were (or weren't) doing?

Yellow Fever - Misery loves company

Anyone know what the marketing for the pulse was like while Thundersticks was in charge? Must admit that I've never been to a game myself.

And yes, I'd take it from this that Clemengers have been given the flick. And won't be missed.
