Clemengers have been useless for us! Only thing they've done is create that Phoenix Fan Zone section on Facebook which they haven't updated since Christmas.

Hope she knows how to use facebook and twitter.   Notice she has quite a heavy association with rugby.

Hard to find anyone in NZ sports management, that hasn't had a Rugby role at one stage.

Hopefully she makes an appearance in the Zone on Easter Sunday. If she is going to market the experience, she needs to have experienced it herself. Learn the fan culture etc.

She was at the Chiefs, let's call her Chainsaw.

Chainsaw is a cool nickname.

Totally agree she should be at the next game in the heart of the Zone. Hopefully we will be leading the Tards after 80'.

In fairness she was GM at the Pulse wasn't she? A franchise who didn't do anything for a couple of years and then through some canny recruitment have put themselves in a decent position. If she was part of that then I think we have ourselves a goodun.

What I think she needs to focus on is for the Phoenix to get its identity back as a (a) Wellington (b) Football (c) Club.

(a) We're a Wellington team based in Wellington.  The majority of our fans are based here, our future is here, so focus on getting them back to the stadium.  One off games in other cities are short term money making exercises - they're a necessary evil but they are not a panacea for falling crowds at home.  Stop focussing all your attention on making those work, and start focussing properly on why Wellingtonians have stopped going.

(b) We're a football club.  Focus on what makes watching football different to and better than watching rugby or netball and don't simply try use the same bland strategies.  And give us back our unique identity - focus on getting football people back in love with the football club.  Small things, refer to the stadium as the Ring of Fire in all Phoenix output, get a proper run out song that we use every week, whether that's johnny cash or Phoenix City we need to start our own traditions, use signings as marketing tools by getting them in the media talking about football in the off season, change the release dates for home and away strip so that we change one strip every year.

(c) We're a club.  Not a brand, not a franchise, a club.  Start listening to the fans and treat your members properly (and that means doing more than just setting up a facebook page).  Get the connection back between fans and the club, and change the message from ownership that they are making changes for themselves - they need to start telling people that they are changing things because they want a great team for the fans and for the city of Wellington.

Except that Phoenix City should clearly be the run out song, not Ring of Fire (which may be played prior to Phoenix City, that would be acceptable).

Apart from that I agree.

Except we aren't a club we are a franchise, as far as I know the FC at the end of Wellington Phoenix FC stands for nothing.

Interestingly that I wrote this comment a long time ago and all of it is still valid!

The point about being a club is there are a load of people who pretty much every day of the year care about what is happening at WPFC - there aren't many sports which have that connection.  So use that connection to make those people feel like they are part of the club (whether it is a franchise or not I think the point still stands).

The next apprentice, Thomas Ben, announced his resignation today to start his own business (hopefully not property development). He's done an amazing job on the commercial front.  ATM, the Phoenix have the highest dollars from sponsorship in their history.

While I mostly still agree with this observation, I think recently this has been changing in the right direction towards us being a club.

Things that have been happening that make me feel this way:

  • The WeeNix playing in the ASB Premiership.
  • Season ticket holders getting getting free access to WeeNIx home games, but NOT TeeDubs home games - strengthens the club's identity.
  • The WeeNix wearing the club's colours in the ASB Premiership - strengthens the clubs identity.
  • The Academy union with Wellington United for the witner league.
  • The improved away crowds, and club's efforts to recognise, support and engage with away fans supporters groups.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Had anyone invited Thomas into the Fever Zone for the games after he has left the Nix? Would be awesome. Top bloke and bloody awesome at his job too.
