But the issue is that it didn't bother Tony Warner or Dani Sanchez. But we can just explain them away by saying "they must not be very good".

But what other clubs are wanting Warner and Sanchez? Sanchez looks desperate (why would he hang around with us otherwise) and Warner was obviously convinced by Ifill. Scottishbhoy2011-08-30 11:17:26

It won't bother every player, some may see it as a risk well worth taking others less so.

IMO Paul Ifill's good word would have dispelled any doubts Tony may have had. Because of their pre-existing relationship Tony would have had some trust in the Phoenix.

Dani seems all but signed, which is good as continuing to sign players will counter 'doom and gloom' reports other players may get.

You see, that's precisely the circular negative thinking I'm complaining about. "We suck because we can't attract good players. Therefore any players we attract must suck."

Alternative interpretation: Terry's money worries aren't actually terrifying for professional footballers; Mehmet wasn't good enough; Ritgers wanted stupid amounts of money.

We've missed a trick with Mehmet. Wouldn't be surprised if he didn't want to hang around. The club is hardly going to say he didn't like us due to our money problems and an owner who is bankrupt.

Wonder what we offered Ritgers. Maybe a slice of the 100 million WGA loan?

You're foolish to think that bad press and publicity isn't going to affect our recruitment drive.

And you seem to be the only person here who saw Mehmet in action and was impressed.

Perhaps some of you who still live in Welly might not realise it, but if a classy European player was going to come and play in the A-League for lifestyle reasons, a small town of 400,000 people with limited shopping and notoriously awful weather is not a great drawcard. (We should really be grateful for what we have - Iffy, Sanchez, Warner, etc.)

No, what's really happened is that you guys have lost all faith in the Nix because of the negative stories in the Doom Post and the NBR, and you assume that everyone else in the world has as well. That's what child psychologists call "absence of theory of mind".

I'm with T-X. I think we've got a good squad and we'll probably make the finals again and I'm going to appreciate my team while we still have them. Terry selling up at this point would only disrupt things worse. I think it's absolutely borderline intellectually disabled to be discussing ownership changes between now and the end of the season. But the FFA really, really like Terry. They consider him one of the best owners. If you don't get why that is then you can't really grasp the issues involved here.

if Terry really valued the club, its name, the players and the sport he would not let it die a slow death which is what i fear may happen.

Michael Cockerill in the SMH, actually. I'm also pretty sure that if the FFA weren't happy with Terry they would have got in contact with a White Knight himself and yanked the licence when Terry first ran into grief.

Also, Blackpool FC's wages bill for a week is like the Phoenix's for a year.Doloras2011-08-30 14:36:17

Blackpool, Bolton, blackburn, Wigan, Burnley,

Which are all basically suburbs of Manchester. Blackpool is the furthest away - about an hours drive, so not really the same as coming out to New Zealand.

Doloras has a point - NZ is a long, long way to come for a pro contract and there are others like Chris Shuker who have already been put off by the distance.

I honestly don't think that Terry's financial position will be a major factor in a lot of players thinking. It's a reality of professional football worldwide that there are lots of clubs struggling financially and lots of 2nd and 3rd tier pros desperate enough for a contract to take the risk on signing with them. We only got Danny Vukovich because he'd been stitched up in Turkey, same thing happened to Billy Mehmet.

I should also point out that, for example, Racing Santander have been able to retain players and recruit, and their owner is... er, well, I don't even need to finish the sentence. At least Terry is not going to go to jail any time soon.

And just to provide a bit more context to the perception of financial crisis at the Nix, this is what players looking for a contract in Spain are currently facing, where six La Liga sides and half of the 22 second tier clubs are currently in administration.

Mehmet clearly has more pedigree than Sanchez and I'd definitely say he's a better player. He might've not been great in the short time he was here, but how many minutes was he actually given? 45 minutes against Brisbane stuck up front on his own and he had a single half chance. Otherwise the ball was punted in his general direction and he was expected to work miracles (funnily enough the same tactics we employ week in, week out with Ifill and whoever else is up front).

So Mehmet gets about 90 minutes or so overall, but how many does Sanchez get?

As for the evidence you asked for about us not signing 'superstars' because of the financial situation - erm, how about the fact we haven't signed anybody that could be considered even close to a 'superstar'??

Citing a 37 year old goalkeeper who has been sitting on the bench for most of his career, and a trialist who hasn't even signed yet is your evidence that things are ok?

It was Doloras who used that word, hence my inverted commas. Nobody else has spoken of superstars but I am talking about players of the calibre of Ifill, Durante, McKain, Fred, Smeltz etc. 'Stars' at this level at least. As far as I can see we've lost a few such players and they have not been adequately replaced. At this point we're not even looking at players who we are confident to sign without them have a trial first. Or at least we don't appear to be - the evidence being that none have appeared as yet.

There is 5 weeks of a 6 month pre season left and I am extremely worried about the state of the squad. That's all there is to it really.

I presume Melbourne lost 2.5 points just for being a bit stabby.

As i said disappointed in the response.

End of the bloody day I will have paid for my season pass and will  be at the stadium for our 1st home game to continue having proudly been there for EVERY home game.
Having my 5th season of membership should mean im able to express views that my differ from the inner sanctum.

But then again probably not.

Was fun after having been one of the first to sign up to YF is disappointing to see that most of those who enjoy the benifits seem to scared to bite the hand that feeds.

Spot some of you at the stadium.

I await to read only the angst as the season goes by.
