Sense of humour? This is a world-class story of a nutcase taken seriously by people, who got away with bizarre/ completely fraudulent behaviour for a long time (took more than 5 million dollars off suckers for something that didn't exist and behaved like he was Roman Abramovich at Richmond Athletic, a minor amateur provincial club).
Kiwis are particularly prone to being conned by farcical "foreign experts" and local charlatans.
I'm originally from Nelson and a decade ago even the supposedly highly qualified  American  woman who was Chief Psychiatrist for the Nelson region was exposed as a male Polish illegal immigrant to the US who'd had a sex change who'd faked all his/her psychiatric qualifications and got away with it in NZ for years (also so bizarre it was hilarious in my book...)
People are taking the Serepisos situation a bit too seriously, so thought a humorous true story from a similar but strange parallel universe of failed football backers might be good...

That comment was in reference to me quoting your post and making this page 10x longer than it needed to be. I live in central Canterbury and play in the Christchurch lower leagues, Richmond are a well known story through most of Mainland.

From the SMH - does anyone have any idea what this actually is getting at?  I really don't understand the implication

TRANSFER FEE

In the end Terry Serepisos couldn't find the money to keep hold of his beloved Wellington Phoenix, but right at the death he thought he had pulled it off. The night before the FFA took the license off him, he thought he had a $100 million loan sorted. So confident was he, he showed the details on his laptop to some of his senior players. What caught their eye was the $35 transfer fee which accompanied the ''loan''. We hope that wasn't the deal-breaker. Four days later Serepisos was declared bankrupt and the A-League lost its best club owner.

To me it means that Terry was still falling for (lightweight this time) advance-fee/419 fraud.

(He had paid $35 to some bozo on the internet as a transfer fee for a loan...)

Dellusion city....

Wow. We're very lucky to have any players at all if he was showing this sort of stuff to 'reassure' players....

Perhaps $35 is a misprint for $3.5 million?

But I wouldn't blink at a transfer fee for $35 for arranging a $100m loan. That's like my bank charging me three and a half cents for my credit card limit.

The article makes sense only if it's like WGA's $1.5 million fee. Anyone who only wants to rip Terry off for $35 would be aiming far too low. And remember he flew to Hong Kong to see these guys so, if it's another scam, it's a high-roller, not just some random guy in an internet cafe in Lagosw.

The point of the article is that Terry seemed to think that producing proof that he was paying more fees to third parties, regardless of the value, was in any way reassuring to the players, senior or otherwise.

Might be a fee for receiving a international telegraphic transfer? Westpac used to charge me $10 to receive money from England, didn't matter how much it was. Dunno what other banks charge tho.

The columnist for SMH (no name given) was just taking a cheap shot at Terry, alluding to the likely similarity to the WGA "no show" loan , and the wisecrack reference to the $35 transfer fee as "a deal breaker". Classy.Not.

Improving,,on the up, a work in progress from Italiano and the Nix. Bring on the bathroom bling in '24! COYN!

Probably not being clear; Terry's problem was both lack of money, and lack of credibility.

Showing the players an uncompleted deal, (which itemises a $35 bank transfer fee), completely fails to address both of his problems.

The real problem is that Terry seems to have thought this would be reassuring!?!

He's good mates with Ricki and has been a guest of the FFA at A-League games in the past so it's not out of the question.  But his background is in amateur sport generally.  Definitely a huge phoenix fan though

I've asked him a couple of times (his daughter is marrying my best friend).  I'm not sure he thinks he is entirely suited for the job, he doesn't have a lot of sports marketing experience which is a lot of what that role entails - his job at sport wellington was more to secure publicly available funding for amateur sport.  But never rule it out...and I think he'd do a very good job at the parts he knew

From the photo in the article, I hope that if he is appointed to work with the club in some capacity it is his job to come up with the new playing/training kits, as well as clothes that the club members wear to official functions, and when travelling.

I love that jacket/shirt/tie combination.

All I do is make the stuff I would've liked

"There is scope to sign three more players, but Morgan warned fans not to expect superstars"

I'd take Allsop and Vargas who've been told they can leave MV

What's the issue? He buys the team but thinks there is a more worthy game in town then his teams first home game of the season? Think at the very least he could have been there and watched the abs on TV. Not flash from one of the frontmen

I hate rugby more than anyone I know, but I can't see the problem here. If Morgan is a rugby fan and a football fan, as many are, why wouldn't he give a world cup semi priority over a regular league game?

Not sure why his political alignment is at all relevant with the rest of that sentence either... says more about the poster than the subject.

Morgan probably had his flights and tickets to Rugger months before the takeover. Cut him some slack AP, he's just put money into our club.

I think the All Blacks game is a slightly bigger game to be fair.

Saying that, he possibly could've done both games.

I certainly consider him centre-left. Universal Basic Income and a wealth tax are very close to Green politics.
