On the other hand all the Spurs fans go to the games.  I've seen the other one.

This was something Rob Morrison mentioned last week was how we need to expand Sky coverage so there is an idenditificaion with the other teams and other players.

The NRL worked from the start because people had spent years watching the game and knowing all the teams and players.  We have never had that.  We need to build the teams and brands in this league by showing the pre-ggame and post-game and including the weekly shows thta cover the whole league.

Joe Lunchpail has no idea there are kiwis playing for other teams for instance.

Would be nice if One News and TV3 news would be like: "hey this All White played in the HAL and scored a goal" but we get build and review of NRL team 1 v NRL team 2 with no NZers in them.

Yep, exactly this. So who needs to push for this? Make sure releasing highlights to Kiwi sports news is part of the deal. Get Sky to put it on Prime News? 'Build it and they will come'. If you can fit the EPL you can give some NZ football highlights. A-league and ASBP. Having them edited in a ready for news format helps?

I'd have thought if lightbox sport got the rights (would require an expansion into OSB) then they'd have a much bigger incentive to grow the league here than sky currently do.

Enlighten me on why SKY dont have an incentive and lightbox would?

Sky have a bunch of properties that are far more lucrative than the A-League. Lightbox would be trying to establish itself as a player in sports broadcasting. Sky have an incentive, but it's not as big as it would be for a provider that doesn't have any other sports properties.

I agree with that. Whenever I get to see A-League on Sky it always looks like some sort of an afterthought crammed in between wall to wall motor sport, rugby and golf. However, a new provider would probably find it difficult to bid for the rights against Sky TV (a new boy on the block would have to have deep pockets for a successful bid).

Sky have lost Golf and the Premier League.  You would be surprised what motivation they have to improve profile.

I agree with HN on this. It is a question of educating our own public. Those who come to our games regularly know the players names and can tell them apart on a field (unlike Dewhurst). Those where the growth of our mehtrix will come from have no idea who the players are, and it is important to do more than just say "come and see a great game of football". I would say: "Come and see Moss pull off a great save". "Come and see WeeMac bend one over the wall". "Come and see Krishna rip up the park with his pace". "Come and see nobody go past Siggie".

"Come and see Roly Bonevacia have tantric sex with a football"

That  goal really was a Sting-er!!!!

well that's just probably based on viewing numbers which recent discussions have shown are not great - plus your perception as a football fan that there should be more coverage.

I would say that if a new player picked up the A-League rights maybe initially they would have a massive appetite to see how much they could grow viewership but I think they would eventually realise there is not a lot of viewership growth.  SKY can leverage their existing resources to try make it a better product and I think over time they have - it's now not delayed much if at all is one example - and all on the back of average viewership numbers

Obviously the way to get a much better profile for the A-League is to put it on free to air - but then is TVNZ or TV3 going to pay enough or value the rights enough for the FFA to get the money they want for it?

I don't think there is an easy answer to be honest as I don't think the viewer numbers in NZ are really big enough to force a radical change.

This.

I didn't say sky has no incentive, I said that lightbox would have a much bigger incentive.

Although as HN pointed out, sky probably have a bigger incentive than they did previously - after losing the rights and with recent pressure from Welnix/FFA.

Whoever gets the TV rights wont make there profits from subscribers - It will be through advertising. That would be where FTA TV kinda rules king.

The thing about lightbox is they charge subscriptions per sports, with sky you can channel surf and realise that there isn't much on so you might as well watch the A-League, or a family could have sky for the rugby and one of the kids happens to like the A-League so they all watch it. So A-League has the potential to reach the entire sky audience (which is 1/3rd of households?). WIth lightbox you will get the Phoenix fans subscribing to the A-League but you have less chance of casuals getting interested.

If Lightbox has it then it would have to be something like Lightbox has all the A-League but they do a deal with TVNZ to play the Phoenix either live or delayed. Coliseum who makes up half of lightbox sports already has that relationship with TVNZ.

Ideally they would do it as a loss leader and give it free to all spark customers or something like that.

The big thing with Lightbox getting the A-League would be that it would involve the move into OSB, or producing of the content. A large part of the reason Sky has a monopoly over broadcasting NZ Sport is that they are the biggest player in content production, if Sky doesn't produce your sports content there is next to no content.

If Lightbox/Spark got into this area, whether doing it themselves or with a partner then they with scaling have the ability to provide competition to Sky in the areas that are where Sky does make their money, Rugby, Cricket etc as they can get the rights and do the production themselves.

This is what Sky's incentive to win a battle for the A-League rights is, if they don't get them they will find a threat in their main content when those rights come up again.

Sorry HN abandoned Sky Sport due to their wonderful sales person not giving a fudge about enquiring to up grade to my sky. With sales people like that on the payroll,  Sky will have no viewers in 12 months.

But never heard of this program when I did have Sports three weeks ago. Obviously they have advertised it as much as they do the replays of other sports.

Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

Thanks.  I generally only watch the Nix on Sky now (when I'm not at the games) or I might put other games on in the background when I'm doing something else, so don't really see much advertising during games.

Just got the club email which has a summary of the Welnix - members meeting and the details for the Akld game as per Warwick's post in that thread.

Seems a very diplomatic response from Welnix after the media circus from Gallop and Lowy. Encouraging but does nothing to change my level of confidence and respect for the FFA.

Frank believes in long term investment, so if he is shouting lunch it is at least 4 more years.

It means that Welnix will be expected to go one better and pay for a flash dinner.  Maybe with wine and then coffee and after dinner mints.

It's about what the Nix give back to FFA as much as anything else.

When I worked in a shopping mall all the staff in the shops got a 10% discount at the BK in there. I figure with Frank's clout in the mall world he might have been able to get 15%

That would explain how he paid for Nix lunch despite the falling numbers of TV viewers for FOX across the ditch.
