Phoenix Ownership - Rob says FTFFA

I could totally understand if Welnix wanted to pull the plug at the end of the season.  As much as it would be like a part of me was dying I would support them in principle.

Come on Boys - Win the League this year and then tell the FFA to go F$#K themselves

This also proves that completely incompetent football administration at a national level is in fact the norm around the world. They are all on the FIFA gravy train and only worry about which junket they're going on next.

The thing is, once it was about the sport, building it, encouraging it, making it something someone wanted to watch. The Phoenix are doing nothing but good for football in Australia.  But that's not the criteria. Money and greed has to come into it.

Seems a shame to bash sponsors who have supported our team.  I doubt they have had anything to do with this.

Only for two reasons:

1. Hard News suggested it.

2. The FFA doesn't need money- they don't need Welnix's!

3. Very pissed off at this moment and this seemed a fairly reasonable outlet

Understood.  Wasn't getting at you or Hard News.  But for all we know Hyundai et al are on the phone to the FFA right now telling them to pull their heads out of their backside and think again. Or I am hopelessly hopeful.

The FFA only responds to $$. Sponsors=$$  Sponsors like stability of investment (with growth potential) and positive market exposure. This decision goes against what is in the best interest of sponsors. But FFA won't listen to anyone tell them that - except the sponsors (the ones who have $$). The sponsors should know that this decision is harming their interests, but if they can't see the obvious then the message should be conveyed. This is not blaming the sponsors but just influencing the FFA the only way we can. They're idiots though so it might be a vain effort.

My first thought is WELNIX should walk away. Why would anyone want to participate or invest in such a ridiculous business environment. There would be huge warning signs for anyone even vaguely considering investing in the A-league (as sponsor or team owner)given the number basket case teams there have been and the frankly toxic environment associated with it (e.g. FFA management and the ongoing fan 'troubles').

The Nix got me back into following football but without them - well I've got plenty of other things to do and spend my money on. I would rather we stay in but frankly WELNIX only have one reasonable choice. They should walk tomorrow and stuff the rest of the current season - F the FFA!. Only a miracle will save it now.

They should pull the plug right now. Just do whatever is required to ensure fairness for players and staff, and try to minimise any further costs.

C'mon mate, the FFA have our balls in their mouths and they're slowly biting down. Just a matter of time before you take them out.

As much as it hurts me that I won't have a team I would happily forfeit my season passes to walk now and stick it to the FFA

Simon Hill speaking some sense a few days ago.

Just quietly - I appreciate that everyones emotions are running high; but the official Wellington Phoenix twitter account should've just left it at that first tweet.

Also, the petition could use a few more actual facts that support our case. (rather than 'we play good football etc.)

I realise that Hashtag -> Change.org petition is basically the default state of internet outrage these days but it's good that so many people have signed so quickly. Quite heartening really, even though it wont do anyhting.

We should all get angry and do wild and emotional things - sell all our players and play Hard News and Feverish for the remaining games this season, crash into every Hyundai we see on the road, riot at every game (will be easy, as emotions will be running high after watching Feverish do Cruyff turns down by his own corner flag for 90 minutes), send death threats to Dewhurst (nothing to do with the FFA or the licence, the guy is just a wanker of commentator).

All I do is make the stuff I would've liked

Once someone pulls together the more comprehensive and evidence-based version of these reasons the stupidity of the FFA move will be even clearer. However stupidity and short-sightedness in so-called 'business decisions' is well precedented....

However nobody can blame WELNIX if they decide that any more investment or cost is simply throwing good money after bad. It might just be just a case of them working out the least painful exit-strategy from here. Tragic really.

There is nothing to say we cant get a better licence agreement in 4 years time. There was definitely issues Welnix's new about and dragged it out right till the end - Its why they remained silent.

Welnix have remained tight lipped about the issue. So Welnix is at fault in some form or another.

“FFA has carefully evaluated the role and contribution of the Wellington franchise in terms of game development, player pathway, commercial factors, broadcast rights and the long-term strategic outlook,” Gallop said.“The application for a 10-year extension to the licence does not meet the requirements we see as fundamental to the future growth of the Hyundai A-League.”

Until Welnix speak out on what requirements they fail. We cant say "good bye" just yet.

Unfair to blame Welnix. The anti Nix drums have been beating in Australia for quite some time. Welnix have made the Nix one of the best run clubs in the A-League...even the Aussies admit that. But there are many commercial factors outside their control. Welnix did not negotiate the pitiful deal with Sky TV, Welnix have honestly tried to encourage bigger crouds to the Nix by playing a more exciting brand of football, but we still get a pitiful 6100 last weekend. Welnix have set up junior player academies to address the player development issues. Welnix have tried to address many of the concerns of the FFA. But the bottom line is the financial case for a third Sydney franchise appears to stacks up better than keeping the Nix in the A-League, according to the FFA.

Gallop saying "the application for a 10 year extension to the licence does not meet the requirement we see as fundamental to the future growth of the the Hyandai A-League".....thats a fairly damming inditement of the Nix's case.

This stuff just did not happen overnight. For quite some time the FFA have been talking to Welnix, SkyTV and NZF. They obviously now think that the Nix don't fit into their long term business plan. Welnix said they would consider a minimum 5 year licence. FFA are offering 4 years. Thats an insult. I think people need to get their head around the fact that the FFA don't want the Nix in the A-League. The 4 year offer is just a sap. They couldn't just say no deal at all....its midseason and they need the Nix to compete until the seasons end.

If you were an optimist you could hope that this is just a bluff to get Sky TV to offer a mega TV deal and also that NZF would come to the party to offer the FFA a sweetner to keep the Nix in. However I think the negotiating has already been done. FFA have gone public. It appears the Nix are toast.

So did the FFA actually take a year off the offer or was it always 4 season's?

Well have had some sleep and i would fully support Welnix if they decide to cut ties immediately.I dont understand why they would even want to continue when its pretty obvious they dont want us and four years is just to eash the pain. Why would supposed smart bussiness mean want to continue to throw money at something from which there is NO chance of getting a return from.

Not sure i even support the save the Nix efforts as it seems like it will probably have to be a constant campaign as it really looks like they dont want us there beyond 4  years. Why try and put off the inevitable..

Not sure why this part of the statement should give us any confidence beyond four years. "and the long-term strategic outlook" then  "The application for a 10-year extension to the licence does not meet the requirements we see as fundamental to the future growth of the Hyundai A-League."

not sure any part of that should give us any confidence beyond four years.

Well I've woken up with the rose tinted glasses on and hoping it'll play out something like this:
  • FFA are playing hardball to get TV money (well, ANY money) out of NZ - and this is how they (Lowy's) do business. They're ruthless.
  • NZF see the writing on the wall for the game in NZ and take action BEFORE it's too late.
  • NZF do a deal with the FFA providing $$$$ for TV rights, cutting out Sky, on the proviso the Nix get a 15 year licence and we have a second Kiwi team within 4 years (there's your precious derby you fudgewits).
  • A League is shown on FTA in NZ - live.
  • Sky go tits up after being unable to sustain revenue with their subscription loses after losing the A League rights.
  • Phoenix win three consecutive toilet seats.
  • Auckland are still shark.

Dreams are free.

I'm gonna have another coffee.

So why do the federations have anything to do with this?

Aside from complying with player bans etc, shouldn't they have nothing to do with a private league? why is AFC so scared of a team from a country in OFC playing in a league with lots of teams in AFC?  It just sounds absurd.

Wellington Phoenix FC
8 mins

Statement from the Club this morning:

The Wellington Phoenix received notification from Football Federation Australia on Monday night that a 10 year licence extension will not be granted
The Club will be seeking greater clarity around the reasons for rejection of the proposal and how the FFA is evaluating the Phoenix’s contribution to game development, player pathway, commercial factors, broadcast rights and the long-term success of the Hyundai A-League, to which the Phoenix is already making a material and positive contribution.
The Club’s Welnix ownership group and Board will meet to consider the license extension option in the existing Club Participation Agreement and will continue to negotiate in good faith with the FFA.
