New Zealand Football will fund the Phoenix reserve team - and Glading has said it would be midweek matches against NZFC teams, though the best option would be them joining the league (I realise this has been no-noed before).

Sweet, now at least money ain't an issue. Even if it's midweek matches against NZFC teams is still gives the guys on the fringe some match time so they aren't sitting on their hands all season.ScoobyD2010-07-28 09:04:18

I assume most of the NZF money is earmarked for Academy style set up for youngsters to fill out the ressies.

And it gives us more Nix matches to watch!

I remember it being said that all Nix matches would be played away, so perhaps not. Though on the bright side, it's excellent for marketing.

Hmm so now with this confirmed I assume we will be building a youth team??? I guess it'll wait till the NZFC season kicks off too.

So we grab a a bunch of kids who train with the nix part time and school the other part time? Then wed nites or whatever they go off and play some games?

Also wonder how many Diegos and such will be allowed to play as well

I will totally go to see all Nix Ressies vs ACFC matches, even if I have to pay.

I'd imagine it'd be made as easy for the NZFC teams as possible, so midweek games at away for the Nix would be likely.

I'm lazy, but when does the NZFC start again?

So would the squad be made from players all around the country or those just based in Wellington?

Good news for Crowther I guess.

Coalface NZ football vs coalface Oz football!!

Would almost go up to Akld to see this (depending on when Bon Jovi concerts are in town).

I think it would be good for the Nix image to have the reserve team travelling around playing in local centres. For us non-welly nix fans, we could get out and support the team when they come close by. I would definately go to Palmy to Watch the Nix play Manawatu.

Guess this could work in the favour of NZFC too. Wonder if someone like TVNZ would pick up the TV rights to NZFC matches? I'd still watch even if they were on TVNZ6 / 7 or something

Doloras - What, no Waitakere matches? At least there you won't be conflicted . My parents will be hoping Bay of Plenty gets and NZFC team (or Waikato FC plays matches at Links Ave again) so I'll have a reason to visit more often!

ScoobyD - Guessing that's one of many reasons, but yeah, with players working during the week it'd make it much easier. Personally I'd have liked to see a 9 team NZFC next year with Nix playing the team with the bye, so we could get some home matches that way. And NZFC usually starts in November.

Luis Garcia - With NZ Football funding it, I imagine there'd be an obligation to the entire country, and for the sake of scouting I'd like to see players from all over the country have a look in with the aim of signing them up for the senior team (damn it feels good to refer to the Nix as that) in the future.

I recall you mentioned you are a Wellingtonian in exile.

I guess this would mean that if you did steal a car you'd feel really bad about it.

If players are selected from around the country this will significantly improve Wellington colleges come secondary school nationals time. And I really hope no one comes out and says that they are "poaching" players from other regions. We need the best young players in the country in this team, even if they have been in the Canterbury set up for example. I wonder how they go about selecting the players though. Will there be a trial period when players can come up and strut their stuff? or will it be picked from a bunch of selectors who already know what talent is out there?

Hmm yeah this is a question of mine too? I was thinking they would base themselves in Wellington but maybe we will have a base core with a few new faces popping in and out from time to time? I dunno though.

Its gonna be great for us in the long term.
Hopefully that means we can get guys like Chettleburgh, Lovemore, Spratley, Pragg etc all getting more longterm time with the club? Wonder if they will limit it to under 21s with 3 overage players or if they just won't mind?

Wonder what happens to guys like Clapham and Peverly? will they stay with their clubs and work or become part of this setup? I would assume they'd stick to NZFC sides?

The think the tricky part would be with the likes of Clapham and Peverley. I'd say everyone must be under the age except those in the Phoenix first team. So although Crowther would start I'd still name Coey Turipa and one other young keeper in the reserve squad. And I wouldn't pick Clapham and Peverley for the reserve squad, but maybe if there was a reserve team Clapham would make the Phoenix senior squad because he would still get some form in game time, be it in a youth team.

Kind of over complicating it. But Clapham doesn't make the Phoenix because he would just be sitting on the bench like Mulligan was. If there was a youth team we could name him in the senior squad but he would still be able to play for the youth team and we wouldn't have a Mulligan situtation where the player hasn't played in a year.

Yeah thats the sort of idea I was thinking. It does mean me end up filling up the squad more

cos he's guna be playing Everton so much in the NZFC midweek?

yeh it'd be good, but greedy.

Get Clapham, Lovemore, etc etc...and stick striker not playing with them...

I think the games should get a sponsor and some kind of weekly derby type thing- like a shield challenge match or something...perhaps a local sponsor?? Something to give each game a bit of a kick and make it a real bragging rights kind of thing...

While it's great to see that this is finally gaining some traction I have a few questions.

The article was hardly very clear, is this starting this season?

They hope to become incorporated into the NZFC, though it sounded like that would take a while, have they worked out a way to avoid the whole issue of players skipping from one confederation to another?

What about the fear of losing the sponsorship of pokies, and how about the issue about if the NZFC is then considered professional or partially pro and the implications this has on our youth going to America and through the college system?

I recall 'Bluemagic'(?) posting back here a while ago, and got to thinking i must have a look at the Auckland City Forum. And jeez he certainly has a bee in his bonnet about the Nix.

The (supposed) decision this morning by NZF to support the Nix reserves must have him spewing. Although no-one on their boards have reacted as yet...

Some fun reading here though - http://www.atomicboards.com/board.pl?user=cookovich

Hmmm. Can anyone explain to me how Diego's Son can be arguing that Nix in the A-League is NZ football ripping off Australian football; and bluemagic and chums argue precisely the opposite?!?

So is this going to happen this season?

Who will make the squad:
Two kids trialling through the YF scholarship.
Sean Lovemore.
Rojas and Musa - or will they be tied as they're already signed into the senior squad?
Coey Turipa
Andrew Milne maybe?

I see no problem with them all being located in Wellington.  Flights will cost a bit to games but you'd hope that NZFC teams would try to play ball occasionally and would travel themselves.  Btw would they play senior NZFC teams or the Youth League sides?  With the women's age group national squads all the girls living south of Auckland moved up there to further their careers so it should work.

I would imagine that a few players contracted full time will have the chance to play in the youth team, so would be good for players not getting much game time (Diego) or coming back from injury.

If they're friendlies at first like you'd expect then yeah.  When they become part of the NZFC then I can see issues popping up.
