Yawn.

How dare the kiwi's that normally start get injured for the Phoenix.  Shocking behaviour of them.

Still wouldnt have as many kiwis as Auck City had and still a squad loaded with foriegners its a fact!!!!

8 New Zealand eligible players in whole Phoenix squad of 22 according to official website

The stats dont lie!!!

Well looks like the result last night suggests that no kiwi player from the 5th best team in the world is up to A-league standard anyway.

I disagree 2nd Best. Now that the Nix reserves have put in such a good showing against the 5th Best Club Side in the WorldTM we can expect to see a lot more Kiwi lads in the Nix first team in the future. After all, if you can draw with 5th Best Club Side in the WorldTM then you must be easily as good as anything in the A-League.

Answered your own question.  If you couldn't beat a bunch of kid, how could you beat an a-league team.

I'm sorry but i think Pachuca now hold the rights to the trademark 5th Best Club Side in the WorldTM

Please refrain from it's use in reference to the 2009 5th Best Club Side in the WorldTM

I agree totally with Jordy B and yes there is such a thing as a friendly!

I don't think the nix reserves will look back at their results this year with any pride. A poor season overall

Auckland will rise once more

dont know where to find a thread on him but this Luke Adams guy (article front page) seems quite the talent

he's been playing for nix reserves is that right? Any word regular ressies attendees?

Apparently the reserves are sh*t?

They have an average age of about 17 and have drawn with most ASB Premiership sides.  I'd say it's going pretty well.

Think Adams only played in the Auckland game because he's been with the Under-17s for most of the rest of the time.

Right. I got the impression that it was where the likes of Diego, Pav and Toto played to keep them playing and that the "star" players of the NZFC played with them.? Obviously I got it wrong aha

That Luke Adams guy had a stint with Birmingham, at least training with them.  Is he the same person as Luke Rowe but we failed with names?  Or is a current Kiwi still with them?
about 15 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
Two different people
Luke Adams had trails but couldn`t get an international clearance until he turned 18
Luke Rowe is English but has a Kiwi Father therefore is entitled to a Kiwi Passport

That's the best bit about it, he's not from auckland
about 15 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
Ok, this topic has become very boring.

Can someone who knows something give us a rundown on whether this looks to have been a useful exercise.  I'm torn...

On the positive it's good to have young players playing and training and good to have some decent run arounds for the stiffs.  Results haven't been amazing but that's by the by.  We're getting younger guys used to working with pros, all positives.

However, on the other side, these guys are 16/17 - are they the best players in their age groups in the country.  I know that the Phoenix have said they won't cannibalise the NZFC teams but is that actually a good thing, shouldn't they be after the best players?  Not much point having a group of youngsters playing if they aren't any good.

Who have been the standouts and has anyone put their hands up for cntracts for next season?

Well it's been good to get Marco up to match fitness after being out injured. Think most people would find it hard to judge the quality of the yoof as they would have only seen one game.

Same deal for Lochhead.

IMHO it's a long-term thing. Hopefully Vic-based group of players are being developed for the senior team (I still hope to see Sean Lovemore signed) instead of just being filler to play alongside Musa etc (which their ages suggest). This is just their first year, perhaps their second year could bring results with it. My main concern is that eight games isn't enough.

james dean is right. Will it be better if these kids play in their age group leagues? For example, strengthen the local age group leagues so these kids can play throughout winter months. Pitting these kids against the nzfc teams is really not treating the nzfc teams with respect. Of course, those cellar dwellers in nzfc need to spruce up and show respect to the league for a start and not treat the nzfc league as a social kickaround league. This may be the real reason why spectator support at these games have been so poor! Lack of quality and excitement.

Aaah, no, that's not really what I am saying at all.

What I am saying if you're good supposedly enough to play for the phoenix in the future at 16/17 you should be able to play NZFC.  But if we're not going to stop players playing NZFC for their home clubs then are we in fact getting the best players at the phoenix youth?  I.e. if there are better 16 year olds at Auckland City then what is the point of all of this??  At 16 you should be training and playing with men in NZ - it's not ideal but it's the reality, if you're still playing with school boys then you're going to struggle to maker it to the pro leagues at 18 and you'll be too far behind the 8 ball.  That's my opinion anyway...

To expand - can someone tell me definitively, are the best 16/17 year olds in the country playing with the phoenix reserves or is it just the best of the rest, i.e. the ones who can't get a game with an NZFC side?

last one up tonight in Canterbury.

"Gould said he had invited All Whites defender Ben Sigmund to help with the team in his Christchurch hometown while he is serving a suspension for accumulating eight A-League cautions. But he said Sigmund would be travelling to Adelaide instead because head coach Ricki Herbert "wants to keep the first-team squad together".

yeah I didn't quite get that either? why pay for siggy and manny to travel to adelaide and sydney when neither of them can ay? ok so training with the squad might be beneficial but surely playing and leading the yoof side is a better use of their time??????

Queenslander 3x a year.

about 15 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
I guess if they are staying the whole week over there it makes sense. They are going to be important members against NQF. Also, I guess if North and Durante do well together Sigmund may need to shift to RB again so will need to practice as a RB.
about 15 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
So play him at RB for the reserves?

good call by ricki i reckon

missing a saturday and wednesday game won't cost either of them too much match fitness

and hanging out with the youth team and kicking round welly doing bugger all or drinking might be ideal

and staying with the squad keeps them focussed on the league and they can benefit from watching the matches and thinking about their own performance with those lads when the come back

youth team results don't matter in relative terms

I strongly disagree. Waitakere & Auckland City could compete in the A-League.

You can't tell me Waitakere wouldn't be able to beat North Queensland Fury

about 15 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
Highly disputable.1-0 over the Phoenix kids and last time they played absolutely hammered by the Phoenix reserves a few years back.

Waitakere (and by extention the NZFC) have no players in the same class as David Williams.
