Tyler Boyd confirmed as a Phoenix Reserve, will play for Mirimar and Team Wellington

Know any details about him. Position, age, what teams has he played for?

Young striker from Waikato FC according to google, scored 4 goals this season. Doesn't seem to have been a part of the NZ u17 or u20 world cup squads. Was on standby for the training camp for the Olympic qualifying squad in Feburary.

Heard Andy Bevin turned down an offer to be one of the 8 youth players.

Not surprised. He'b be aiming for a role in the first team. He's done Phoenix yoof already and probably would want at least a full Youth League spot not our more Mickey Mouse academy.

Doesn't surprise me, it seemed pretty clear he wants a fulltime gig in the A-League. The academy is unlikely to be a step up on his US scholarship.

It would be one foot in the door though, as opposed to none.

Monday Gossip

I here there is a current Miramar player being signed up for the Nix Reserves (Other than Luke Rowe)

Has anyone a name?

Unless it's another player, I'm guessing most of these players will end up playing for Miramar because of Team Wellington/Calcott. Maybe Mason-Smith? Can't think of any other young Miramar players good enough

Could be hoping the Unicorns spot him, Popovic was scouting around the NSWPL. Question is, would they use an import slot for a youngster. I do hope CCM have a look at him, they have spare import slots and have given a number of their youth team chances over the years.

Depends on your source really. They could be claiming him as theirs already.

Here?

Justin Gulley surely a chance?  He's been in and around the Phoenix set-up for ages now anyway.

The best 8 willing to play in the Phoenix Academy.

He's a regular ASB Premiership player, under 20, been near NZ rep sides, near the Phoenix yoof and played and trained with them since he was 15 or 16.

Havnt seen much of Gulley but thats the sort of player I'd expect. Guys who could make the step up if they were given full time training and regular gametime

Permalink Permalink

Don`t think it`s Gulley

Had a look on the Miramar website and there is no 1st team squad list and their wiki page is well out of date

Maybe I am misinformed but wasn't he on a scolarship in the US?

If so, isn't that like 100 times better than what he is being offered?

[quote=Hard News] I can probably understand if they want to try and develop him as a right back due to the shortage but won't be expecting great things. ASBP player maybe but hasn't stood out. Maybe I'm being overly hopeful about these 8 youth spots. Given that Rowe is probably one of them I'm maybe hoping the quality is there abouts for the rest of them. Also there is a large number of young players who regularly train with the phoenix.

Threw it in to chase a pro contract in Aussie.

It`s going to be hard for Bevan to go pro in the A-league, other than the Phoenix as he will always take up an import spot

That is unless he hangs around the state leagues for 5 years to get naturalised, that will make him 25.

Maybe he's just gambling on the Nix not getting a striker from elsewhere this off-season and then bagging that spot at the last minute? Could be an U21 player option if we need it too.

At least he'd be a better option than Pav off the bench. Can also play as a winger.

Asumption, Bevan has been offered a Nix Sholarship

A massive bluff if he is holding out for an U21 spot, hope he has good advice, could end up with nothing.

Luke Rowe could be in a similar position

Wouldn't it be great if the Phoenix management made some sort of public announcement about what is happening with the academy players? It's annoying and slightly worrying how quiet they have been recently.

Any South Islanders to make the Academy....Unlikely I say

Possibly the ginger bread man or would he also be looking for an U21 spot or another gig in Scotland ?

They have lowered expectations so much I'd be happy with a 'Hi, we're still alive'.  I notice it looks like Lee Taylor has left as well with them currently looking for a Strength and conditioning coach.

Lowering thos eimport expectations a little bit further.

Yeah, given how vocal uncle Gareth was during the season this is concerning. Are the Welnix guys sick of their new toy already? At least with Terry we always had news!

I'm seriously concerned with what owners with little understanding of the business and a penchant for austerity is going to leave us with.

This is where we need the board members who have a footballing background to step in and 'advise' the owners on what to do.

For me, this offseason is really their first test. They made a good start to it with the setting up of this academy etc but if Moss and Brockie are the best signings we get this time, and there are no investments in extra staff or facilities, then I think questions will have to be asked about how commited they really are. I guess in terms of signings there's a long way to go and we might have to wait til July for the UEFA transfer window to open and players to come off contract, but IMHO they should still be talking to the press and reassuring fans about the directiopn the club is taking. Like I said, Gareth did that well for most of the season but ever since he went to Antarctica its been a very different story.
