Matt Borren is a good young keeper. Fantastic shot stopper. Would be a good pick up as a second keeper to sit on the bench, get a good solid year of coaching, and do a job cover injuries, send offs, AW call ups and suspensions.

Only draw back is height but that's not stopped him.

Chur for match summary G4L.  Pax?

Was a reasonable crowd there considering it was midweek and at 5-30pm. I'm hopeless at guessing and was seated right at the front so didn't get to see much of the crowd. At a guess, I would say around 200 maybe?

Thank fuck I flagged the idea of bailing out of work and going up.  Even Carl's Jr wouldn't have made it worth the trip.

Ok he may not have been there but.... Really? I just can not fathom that. I've seen them twice this year and they have been fucking awful. And we lost to them?

I saw the Phoenix line up and read the subs, did Ifill play the 2nd spell for YHM?

Really? I'm flabbergasted...

Fair to say my flabber is a little gasted as well.

Report sounds like the first team.  Good for 45 minutes, couldn't finish a cheese sandwich.

I'm starting to wonder if making Greenie assistant was such smart idea. Hell of a nice bloke and all but even he has admitted that he has found the whole coaching thing a huge learning curve. He is responsible for the "A"s. its his job. Considering the emphasis the club is putting on youth development for future recruits its absolutely vital they get the best guy in there to bring these kids along.
From what I have seen of the "A" set up its been a bit of a shambles. They were a rabble when they got dicked 0-4 by TW....to lose to Manawatu is really piss poor.
Next season the AW's will have a big schedule with the November qualifiers and probably quite a few warm up games in Sept and Oct. Ricki will be heavily involved and absent from the Nix at various times . I really think we need a more experianced assistant running the show while he is away. I don't think I would have much confidence in Greenie doing it......bring back Trani !!!!!!!

No mention of Hogg getting game time, did he play? Very surprising result given strength of Nix reserve team, however apparently the Manawatu keeper had a blinder. Clearly this reserve team set-up needs a boost like the main team. Good to see Ifill play.

Manawatu notch morale boosting Phoenix win
17.01.13
PALMERSTON NORTH - YoungHeart Manawatu ended a seven match losing streak by dumping Wellington Phoenix 'A' 3-1 at Memorial Park on Wednesday.

YoungHeart - bottom of the ASB Premiership and without a win since beating Otago United 3-0 back in November - played without inhibition and turned in a top performance.

Goals by Tom Mosquera, Michael Fraser and Seule Soromon gave Manawatu the new year lift they've been desperately seeking after a morale sapping 4-1 home defeat to Otago at the same venue on Sunday.

Wellington Phoenix 'A' were by no means a pushover.

Alex Smith, Manny Muscat, Paul Ifill and Benjamin Totori all took part in the match for the visitors who like their first team, struggled to hit their usual rythmn.

Phoenix 'A' opened the scoring with an early goal but the home side rallied quickly.

Mosquera equalised just after the quarter hour mark, making it his eighth goal in nine competitive fixtures this season, an impressive total given his team's travails this season.

Manawatu nosed into what became an unassailable advantage when Vanuatu international Seule Soromon scored 13 minutes into the second half.

Michael Fraser - who has had his share of injury woes this season - capped off a fitting return, notching his first goal of the season and YoungHeart's third midway through the second half.

YoungHeart Manawatu last faced Wellington Phoenix 'A' on December 7, 2010, when goals by Colin Falvey, Adam Cowan and Dale Higham gave the Palmerstonians a convincing 3-0 win over a team that contained Dylan MacAllister, Mirjan Pavlovic, Diego and Danny Vukovic.

Only four players from that day remain with Manawatu - Cowan, Higham, Nathan Cooksley and goalkeeper Matt Borren.

Manawatu face Hawke's Bay United in the ASB Premiership at Memorial Park on Sunday at 2pm.

I asked the question a few season's ago but can't recall the answer:  Whatever happened to Congo Burgers on the corner of Albert and Ferguson Streets?  Best burgers ever - made Wisconsin look like a happy meal.

Oh, I know that.  Have visited all three Auckland outlets in the last 6 months (plus Buelton and the one at the LA Angels home ground before they opened here).

Wow! I have been ridiculed for on this site for having the nerve to suggest that the standard between A-League and ASBP is not much... I understand now, the ASBP shits all over the A-League. My fault.

Honestly - that looked like a 'strong' team that the Phoenix fielded - how could you get humped by YH Manawatu?

In fact, if my memory serves me correctly, you've been humped every game in the series.

Once again - Wow!

A B team got beaten 3-1. Calm down.

Nice try at levity chaps. Fact is a few years ago Nix reserves came to Trusts Stadium, maybe for their first live Auckland appearance, and played World Club Champ-bound Waitakerie. As I recall the Nix fielded a team full of guys either coming back from injury - McKain, Caceres - or unable to make the first team - Mulligan, Kwasnik - and youth players - Kosta, Greg Draper. In a scintillating display of power, purpose and possession, Nix reserves dealt to the Japan-bound Westies 7 - 1 in their own backyard. Very impressive.

Last night Nix reserves (see above) played Manawatu, arguably the worst team in the NZFC and going nowhere, for a 1 -3 loss.

So are the teams in the NZFC now so much better? I don't think so.

So what's actually going on with the Nix?

Right you are. That team had a number of All Whites plus the like of Totori and Ifill and yet got soundly beaten by YHM.

I went to the match. Phoenix scored in about the 2nd or 3rd minute from an Ifill cross. Not sure who the scorer was sorry. Manawatu equalised through Tom Mosquera who is currently the ASB top scorer. He later got subbed by Seurle Soromon. 1-1 at halftime. Ifill, Totori, Boxall, Smith and Moss all started. Ifill was subbed after about 30 minutes. Smith came off at halftime along with Moss.

Game was reasonably even. Phoenix may have slightly shaded it posession wise. Matt Borren in the Manawatu goal pulled off three stunning saves which should have been goals. Phoenix hit the crossbar in the first half and Manny had a long range screamer hit the post in the second half when the score was already 1-3. McMaster played the second half and probably couldn't do anything about the two goals he conceded. Manawatu didn't create as many chances but just took them better.

Ricki was in the grandstand just along from me but I couldn't see Greenie on the bench which was strange.

I would have given you kudos has you stopped before you said Totori and Ifill. Considering its Ifills first 30mins back from surgery and Totori should be playing for YHM....
