4 Phoenix players. 4 U22 players from the FSE. Rest kids.

Wanderers players can't be touched.

Recruting for a coach atm.

Does the FSE actually still exist?  Assume this means a lot of the Phoenix academy players will be involved

the nix academy players are a bit young aren't they?

Think the academy is for younger kids, and the FSE (now nix reserves) is for late teens.

I think they need to get rid of wanderers. Its spreads the talent pool too thin between the 2, and they're effectively competing for players. It's pointless.

Think you can assume that means those fringe players who have been around. ie Gulley, Joel Stevens, Watson etc.

Agreed.  If you want kids to play in the ASBP then just make it that 2/11 have to be eligible for whichever youth age group you are targeting - happens all around the world.  The idea that this serves as some kind of build up to an international tournament is complete BS

Plenty of kids are playing ASB Premiership. What NZ Football wanted was for these guys to play ASB Premiership together so they can form combinations. I don't have a problem with their existence.

Was it not rumoured that Emblen could be coaching this team?

This is quite an interesting development and I think that the football landscape in Wellington got interesting. You now have potential tug of war game because many sides offer different things.

You have TW whom are a top 4 team and have Champs League so will attract good players.

You have the Phoenix reserves whom cannot touch the Wanderers kids and will attract those who would like to show case for the Phoenix and potential professional employment and it looks like will be young players.

Then there is the thing from last year regarding the TW/Wairarapa youth and the recruiting around that.

I guess some young players are going to find themselves playing ASBP/NYL when potentially they would not have previously and some players whom have to chose between either Champs League or showcasing for the Phoenix. Is there enough decent young footballers in the region to go around to add to the quality or are some players going to play and be out of their depth and add nothing? I would be interested in commentary from those more learned than I as its been a while since I lived down there.

Won't be Emblem.

I'm not sure their will be too much cross over. Team Wellington will mostly be looking at the 25-30 yo players.  Wanderers have the 18-19 year olds.  Phoenix will be looking at the 16-17 year olds I suspect. plus 4 decent early 20s. Those are the ones that will have to choose between Teedubs and Phoenix.

Oh ok. So 4 pros, 4 early 20s (already sign posted whom they will be) and the rest kids. Interesting.

We can now sign 3 youth players to complement the squad, as per every other HAL team. Progress!

Despite the on-field loss, the Phoenix have had a win off it, with Football Federation Australia changing its rules and allowing Wellington to sign three youth players to complement its A-League squad.

Up till now all the Australian clubs have been allowed three additional under-20 pros on the books but the Phoenix have not.

"Now we're going to be competing on the same level as all the other A-League teams," Merrick said, adding any youth signings would play predominantly for the Phoenix's national league side.

"That's how it would work if we decide to sign one or two players in that area. I don't think we need to sign three at this stage but it gives us good options and it means we don't miss out on any youngsters that we want to have involved with the club on a fulltime basis.

"Our school of excellence, with Joel Stevens and Tom Doyle, we're beginning to show we can produce good players through our own pathway."

That is very good news. Wonder if we will drop Rufer & Ridenton down to the NYC contracts and sign a couple more squadies?

Can you downgrade a contract like that mid stream?

I have no idea but both are probably on the minimum wage, which is the same as the NYL contracts.

Given the age of siggy and dura particularly would a couple of CBs on youth contracts be handy? They would be good mentors for up and coming CBs to learn the dark arts. Or is it better to sign an older experienced pro when the time comes?

i reckon we're well covered already, so maybe just one young defender

the first team has 4 experienced centre backs - roly, siggy, dura and boxall

3 of those could be away on AWs duty simultaneously. What's Luke Adams up to now?

Has played right back all season for Wanderers - and didn't play at all for WaiBOP last season.

Maybe he used to be a forward in his high school days but hasn't been the case in his NRFL career

valerio raccuglia's meant to be int he mix

you got me thinking harry hunt.  the other teams are signing players, issuing press releases and communicating with their fan bases about player movement s, games, coaches, etc, but we haven't heard dick from this lot

if they are not going to take this thing seriously and treat this league with respect they shouldn't be there.  the same applies to wanderers SC

even southern united have sorted their comms and information provision out with an awesome new website http://www.southernunited.co.nz/

waibop, we already knew was class.

auckland's is very good, but not as good as when GGW ran it

hawke's bay's is not great, but still at least they do something

canterbury are naively trying to use the crappy fox sports platform provided to them by the league

etc etc etc

but wanderers sc and phoenix b don't even have a site at all.  we haven't heard anything from them, so i assume they are not interested in growing the game domestically.

which is pretty rich coming from an entity owned by gareth morgan, who was so quick to hammer NZF for not running the game properly

I said it at the start and I'll say it again now.  I think they asked for the team first and only now are they working out how best to use it.  I really don't think it makes a lot of sense to have both Wanderers and the Phoenix B in this league

Worst part is both of these sides (NZF and the Phoenix) are the ones who have people employed full time to do PR and write press releases!

That I know of:

Oliver Sail
Cherbel Khouchaba
James McGarry
Justin Gulley
Hamish Watson
Joel Stevens

Think there are a couple more from the academy.
