Disgusting move by NZ Football if true

The quote from those fans "It's a kick in the teeth for Wellingtonians but I would love it,'' says Wilson. Aucklanders would support them as long as they won."

Just goes to show doesn't it.

If Terry's circumstances change, I would hope that Gilltrap would be smart enough to realise the club only works here.

Im an Aucklander, this would be a dumb move.

Make sure you vote in the stuff poll on the same page as the story.

Well here is your big rich interested buyer..... and he is a man that gets things done.

I can understand NZF making these kinds of moves as there is a strong possibility that Terry will fold [despite how much some of us hope he doesn't].

But you'd have to question a move to Auckland and taking the team on a tour. A club needs a base and Wellington has proved itself as the best place for a football franchise, I just don't see how Auckland would work, they won't get the same crowds, sure great potential but how often have they failed to live up to it. Somewhat prophetically that Auckland fan said they would support them if they won and that sums up the Auckland sports fan. I lived in Auckland for 30 years and seen that happen, crowds even stopped turning up to Auckland rugby games because they were TOO GOOD.

that's a fairly sickening idea to start the day with

Difficult to see how season ticket sales would be possible if the team was always "on tour"

That said, football could work in Auckland if they didn't base it out inthe middle-of-nowhere north harbour stadium.

They wouldn't get my money or support thou

I thought that quote was funny too! Shows there true support and why the Kings and Knights failed in Auckland! Wellington support win or lose!! (Though we prefer the win)

What does it go to show?

The article doesn't quote me as saying Aucklanders would support them as long as they won."  You have put the quotation mark there.  The paper has paraphrased what I said to fit into the constraints of the caption.  In the text of the story it gives a better indication of what I said:

He believed the club would be better supported than the now-defunct Auckland-based professional teams the New Zealand Knights and Football Kingz but only if the team consistently won.

That is true, and is the same for all sports teams - even the Wellington Phoenix, i.e. winning sport teams draw bigger crowds than losing teams.  No surprise there.

Of course I'd be happy to be able to see more Phoenix games if they were based in Auckland but I also realise that the game is bigger than me and it'd be better for all if they stayed in Wellington.

Cheers

Yes, but in Auckland the effect is multiplied tremendously.

Its the realality of the suituation that NZF find themselves in. Good on them being proactive.

Face the facts from NZF point of view, they need the Phoenix (we need a pro team). If the only person that will step up and fund the team is a   Aucklander what do you expect NZF to do, turn them down?

It's game on now.
Either Terry gets his finance's sorted or a Wellingtonian (who we are all gonna ) steps in and saves our team

So come on Wellington, lets show those jaffa's our name is  "Welligton Phoenix"

If NZF does this to Wgtn, then a Wgtn football league is the only alternative. As how can we support NZF with fee's after a stab in the back like that.

Where was NZF, and its big Auckland do gooders at the death of the Kingz?

I agree, I wouldn't want my sub money going to NZ football if they turn around and do something like this (Though they have been quoted as saying its all Bull )

Maybe a break away like what happen in Taranaki...

Worst idea ever....imagine the effect on ACFC's crowd.  it would kill them as a club.

From the quotes I have heard from Van Hattum I have heard on the radio ('it's absolute bullsh*t') I think they may have misquoted him or taken him out of context. More Dom Post sh*t stirring IMO.

Auckland has proved not to work

Think everyone is overreacting here.
1) NZF can't shift the franchise as Terry hold the licence.
2) NZF have probably just sounded out other options in case Terry falls over.  Someone has got a wiff of that and assumed the nix are moving now.
3) Dave Burgess wrote the article.

YOU CAN NOT BE SEERIOUS!

think a 2nd franchise at the trusts stadium in 5-10 could be an option though...or whenever a money bags pops up with their own team to sort it out...

This is one of the reasons it wont work.
Central., now effectivel;y Auckland City, refused to support the Kingz and the Knights.

All this will do is create 3 mediocre clubs in Auckland and they will loose their O League success and stuff the Phoenix.

THIS!

People should be happy to hear that NZF are proactively sounding out any and all options in case the Phoenix fall over in Wellington. But there is a long, long way to go before this will ever happen.

Great beat up by Burgess though. Van Hattum and one of the Auckland 'Nix fans in the story already claiming they've been misquoted. Top journalism!

Still, if it has the effect of scaring the horses down here and forcing any potential Wellington investors out of the woodwork, then great. In fact, if it forces Terry to be a bit more forthcoming with info about his position and what the plan is, then that would be good too.

Surely it won't happen, if Terry went to the wall some other Wellingtonian would surely step in.
Personally I'd love to have another attempt at an A League side based here, and with someone with Giltrap's money behind it it could work. Just please, not at Wellington fan's expense. They've made the club what it is today.
Nix, Leyton Orient and Alloa Athletic supporting schmuck.

If the outcome of this.. "expose"...is to motivate a Wellington investor or investors to step up and either support Terry or offer to take over if Terry can't carry on, well and good.
Just keep the Phoenix "Wellington" Phoenix please.

My understanding is that the FFA own all the intellectual property rights of the franchises.

For some reason the success of the WELLINGTON Phoenix is lost on an Auckwood located national body. The main base for any back up plan should be on WELLINGTON based interests. Also note the location of the NZRFU headquarters. NZF should follow suit after their Auckwood lease runs out.Hogster2011-05-31 08:52:39

Yeah, let's be clear here - Terry doesn't really "own" the Phoenix, he funds it. Pretty much anything that could be described as a real asset belongs to the FFA. This is something any new "owner" needs to understand.
