Wellintonians - go and watch Team Wellington. Aucklanders - go and watch City.

Football for everyone.

Tim - you hit the nail on the head that you wouldn't support an Auckland based Phoenix. Would you then watch TW or just miss out altogether. The Phoenix benefits a minority of the population. The ASBP benefits the majority.

The talk isn't about Team Wellington or Auckland City though! You would hope they get support. But this isn't about Team Wellington moving to Auckland. This is about the Nix and Auckland wanting them again.
Sure but all you 'Nix fans keep banging on about sour grapes at AKL losing the A-League franchise and hypocritically all I'm getting from this thread is a strong wiff of sour grapes at a mere hint of the Nix moving.

Yeah, I did think this too. Those that say they won't support the nix if they're in Auckland are
a little hypocritical

EXCEPT then i thought, most of the problem arising with you guys is your mudslinging toward the phoenix and NZ having a team in the A league, since you lost your A league team. THAT is sour grapes, and hypocritical for the most part as a lot of you went to kingz/knights games.

If that happens, then we'll talk. Until then, you can start knitting your own blue phoenix scarf in preperation.

Auckland already have a team. Maybe go and check them out sometime.
They are not (or at least not supposed to be) professional teams. There is a slight difference in the skill levels when your players, and those they compete against, get paid and are able to train as a full time job.

Auckland lost it's A-league franchise because there wasn't enough local support, a poor record, and no owners wanting anything to do with it. This (if it's true which is starting to sound unlikely) feels like it is being stolen in spite of being relatively well supported and successful.

Maybe we 'Jaffas' should form our own A-League franchise.

If the Nix can survive Terrys troubles and stay in Wgton, we would have double the number of A-League games in this country.

There was a rumour floating around a while back that this was being contemplated. I think one of the Auckland clubs had visions of grandeur 2012. Yes?

Sure, but that's certainly not happening, is it? I don't know but I'd imaging average attendances at a nix game to be around 7-8K and I'm certain you're not getting that at TW games.

Why the hell would you expect 8k at a TW game?

You're seriously deluded if you think that. Did Auckland city get 6000 after the kingz folded and people stopped turning up to the knights?

Get a grip on reality. There are always going to be casual fans turning up to professional sport, especially in Wellington. The trick is to convert some of those, which seems to be happening here anyway.

No, and before the Phoenix existed, or the Knights, or the Kingz those averages were about the same.  The Phoenix haven't stolen anything from the ASB Premiership it's at the same level it always was.

If the Phoenix disappear the change in the ASB Premiership would be minimal, but the coverage of the game, the people watching the game, and the level for New Zealand footballers to aspire to would collapse.

Of course, like all good knitting circle members you will blindly ignore this evidence.

While it would be nice, it isn't realistic...
You are comparing too different teams. Just because they are getting that numbers at Nix games doesn't mean that will translate to local team.

That is like all the people that go watch an English premier league (40-60,000 a game) should be turning up to watch their local team.

Why the hell not? If that number turn out for the Phoenix why should they not turn out for TW? It seems to me that NZers have no faith in themselves and are forever turning to outher countries for guidance. I thought this was the country with the DIY mentallity.

Because they play at times that aren't as convenient as Nix games. Because they aren't well advertised of when they are. The skill level is different. You don't get to see some well known internationals.. Take your pick!
It would be nice if they did get the numbers, but you have been given the reasons why not and also given proof that the Kingz or Knights leaving didn't help the Auckland team either!

So back to the Phoenix not leaving Wellington

Eh??? The EPL teams play in England. There's not one team in England playing in Spain. The last time I checked Man U played in Manchester against maybe Liverpool from Liverpool.

If you want an even better example try Scotland - there not that much more population there but it's local teams against local teams with good attendances.

So about those Phoenix eh....

Oh that's right, you don't want to start your own thread.. Sorry, my example wasn't perfect. But the logic is the same. You aren't going to get the same numbers that turn up to watch a Professional team, to turn up to watch the local team!!

Quite possibly.  I get on fine with the McIlroys.

I just don't understand the migration from Bloc 5 stalwart to Phoenix hater.  I can't balance that in any way, shape or form.

Actually Ali, i'd like you to explain The New Saints, a fully professional English club playing in an inferior Welsh league, when at the same time you have Cardiff City and Swansea City, fully professional Welsh clubs playing in a superior English league. Does this mean neither league is coalface? Or are both? I guarantee it will boggle your mind.

The point seems to be, if the Phoenix fails, NZF will work with whoever comes forward, including parties outside Wellington. Which makes sense, from their point of view.

OK, Ive been mulling this over this morning. I've taken a slight deviation in life, and am now tackling poetry as my prediction skills are taking an off-season break. I decided to convert this latest "scoop" into a haiku- risky I know but here goes;

Wellington Phoenix belong to us,
All Whites are the national team,
To all fans of the game in Auckland-
Save up. Buy Your own. Fark off.

I thank you

Had a look at The New Saints, seem they are an amalgamation of two clubs (13km apart), one based in Wales the other in England, however the English team did play in Wales prior to the merger in 2003. I suppose once you drop down the pyramid the level evens out between the Welsh leagues and those in England, just a smaller pond so may be better for some clubs?
