Hepatitis - if someone, anyone, could try and make some sort of coherent argument as to how an A-League team could survive and prosper in Auckland then there might be a different view. But right now I see it as the worst possible solution for everyone with an interest in football as it will inevitably lead to another failed franchise no matter who owns it.
I see the best solution as Wellington based, that is the first pick as far as I am concerned. They have been loyal to the team through the tough times and deserve for the franchise to remain there for sure.
Under a new Wellington owner that has a more secure business, I am sure the fan base would keep turning up. I suspect that there will be many wondering whether to give their support just now though (that isnt what I want to be saying but I reckon it is true)
However if no Wellingtonian put their hand up, or if a funder from Auckland didnt want to keep it based in Wellington what then ??
I dont see it as an inevitable failure, and a few things are different than previously with the Knights/Kings, just saying
We have seen that a well picked and coached NZ team can foot it in the A league week in week out, a good history helps
NZ has had a taste of finals football, and know how much the support of the fans makes a difference
A strong supporters club does wonders for getting people to the games. The Fever as such didnt exist then, the internet is stronger and more accessible
There are improved transport options to all possible venues now
More people in Auckland now than previously and I suspect more football lovers
It would be a punt to give Auckland another go , but wouldnt it be better to have something and to keep the franchise operating here than to spend years in the wilderness waiting for the A League to decide to give us another opening
Clearly everything possible has to be done to keep it in Wellington first
