Phoenix Transfer Speculation 2012/13

Lucas Pantelis' injury setback means the Phoenix are likely now to put together a squad of 21 players, rather than the minimum 20.

With 17 on the books, Herbert would like the remaining four signings to be a striker and a centre back in addition to two under-21 players.

The Phoenix are in talks with an overseas striker and, while not giving away much, Herbert was "hopeful that we might get that over the line".
interesting that no more right back is needed. Lia is gonna have fun
A 19-year-old midfielder from Uruguay, Joaquin Noy, is scheduled to arrive in Wellington on Thursday for a trial to fill the one remaining import spot. Noy is the captain of the reserve team at Montevideo Wanderers, who play in Uruguay's premier division.

But this is even more interesting. A young import, filling an u21 and foreign spot!

Lots of food for thought in that article. Lia at RB is a bit of a worry, but he wasn't too bad there briefly at the end of last season so if he can hold onto that sort of form we might be ok. Hopefully.

Anyone know anything about this Joaquin Noy? What sort of midfielder is he? Why is he looking at shifting to NZ when he's 19 - is he not good enough for the first team at his club, and if so, is he good enough for us? If Ricki's still looking at an import striker then there isn't enough room for Noy is there (5 imports: Ifill, Sanchez, Smith, Totori, and one more).

It says that Ricki is looking at the Uruguan AND and an overseas-based striker, but doesn't actually say that the striker is an import, which I took to mean that he is either a kiwi or an aussie?

Hmm true, I didn't think of that. So what Kiwi/Aussie strikers based overseas could we realistically be looking at? I assume by overseas he doesn't mean Australia either.

Very interesting read. Not convinced by Lia at RB but could be worth a shot if no one obviously better can be found. Just good to see stuff happening and glad to hear they are strongly considering promoting one of the youth squad. Even if they don't play much it will be an incentive to get the best young players in the mix for the future.

Tawa's Louis Fenton was one of the less starry-eyed members of the nine, given that he trained with the Phoenix at times last season. The 19-year-old midfielder/forward is an exciting attacking prospect with a touch of Marco Rojas potential about him.

That means MVFC scouts are after him, right?

If we are not going to sign an import RB, we should just play Manny there. We gain more from having Manny play RB than having him in the midfield and Lia at RB.

Agree entirely but we've bollocksed our recruitment and have no space for the Right back we need.

A

Actually, there was talk that Coveny was keeping an eye on him and he is involved at Victory.

No right back for the 4 consecutive year - this is beyond a joke.  Perhaps we (ricki, the club, whomever) should start actually scouting players instead of waiting for them to show up under our noses which is the only way we seem to sign anyone.  It's a specialist position, why do people not realise that?

Also, if our U21 professional can't beat a bunch of youngsters to make the Olympics then there is some seriously problematic thinking going on at NZF HQ.  Guys who are 22/22 without a pro contract are almost not worth bothering with, they are not going to go on and have a future career for the AWs.  Play players with a future, it's not as if there are that many of them.

Went surfing for info on Joaguin Noy and couldn`t find a lot

Isn`t listed in the Montevideo Wanderers 1st Team Squad

Appears to have come through their youth system and been playing for their second team

Manny Muscat and Vince Lia may well switch places.

Herbert said Muscat, a regular at right back last season, would definitely play in midfield, with Lia a strong chance to play right back. "I think he'd be very comfortable there."

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!!!!!!!!! [breathes] Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why are right backs so hard?!

Man I'd hate to to wait for Ricki Herbert at the supermarket. He seems like the kind bloke who goes in for 2L of milk then comes out 4 hours later with $700 worth of groceries... and no milk!!

Now that the youth program has started maybe the yellow fever scholarship should be a program to find us a right back.

Shopping at the Herbert household:

Mrs Ricki: Oi! Ricki luv.  How come I asked you to go to the shop and get some milk and you bring me back a Pav?

Mr Ricki: Sorry pet, but he was on special and someone had already eaten all the pies.

I too agree that Manny would do better than Lia at RB.

I would prefer Manny to play in MF but he gives us so much more going forward as a RB than Vinnie, so I hope Ricky changes his mind

We tried the Lia/Manny switch last season against CCM when Dura was injured, it was very clear to everyone except Ricki that it was not working after 10 minutes of the match. Lia's distribution from the back was not up to scratch and he was letting players get around the back of the defence far too easily. I will not be impressed if he end's up being our RB.

Since when do players get to choose their position ? Fair enough for Manny to indicate a preference and fair enough for Herbert to try and recruit to make that possible but it didn't come together so; Eat humble pie Ricki and acknowledge and apologise that your recruitment came up short. Suck it up Manny and play where your club needs you to play.

good question. In the same vein, what will Manny do if Ricki does try to play him at RB - sue for breach of contract?

Edit: I mean, obviously he won't be happy and that might affect his performance, but is that it?

Agree with Whity boy. Can't find anything that says there is some clause in his contract that says he must play in midfield, closest was Manny hoping to be played there more:
“The only change I’d like to see is me return to the defensive midfield role I prefer. I’ve been happy to fill in at right back but hope to convince Ricki I should be in midfield where I feel more involved in the game.”

So somehow the idea that he would be playing DM this season just got stuck in our heads and we've been thinking all along he won't play RB when actually there's nothing that says that anywhere? If that's true that's awesome - Muscat for RB!

i cant imagine manny would sue, but he might have a get out clause in his contract, or just call up mv or mh and ask them to buy him and they probably will, and knowing Rickis transfer record, manny will go, but some how ricki will think that hes done the right thing...

just an thought....

Transfers between HAL clubs are not allowed. The only way Manny can move is if there is a clause, if there is then management are dumb, which voids contract or if Phoenix release him either by paying out the remainder of his contract, which would still be applied to the salary cap for the remainder of the contract, or by mutaul consent.

All this right back angst is a waste of time. We already have one of the best right backs in the league, and if Manny is required to play there he will. There's no way he has a clause in his contract saying he has to play at DM.

Fair play to him that he should express a preference, and fair play to Ricki that he should make an honest attempt at looking at other options, but if it doesn't work out then Manny will be at RB. And the pressure to do that won't just come from Ricki it will come from his own team-mates. They would never tolerate an individual putting himself ahead of the team and Manny doesn't seem like the kind of person to do that anyway.

If we sign a new right back or we get Lia up to speed there that's just a bonus that increases our options. A striker remains our number one priority.

I have said this previously, I am worried about our lack of depth at CB and FB. Hypothetically lets say Sanchez and Lochhead are out injured, with the current squad you could put Manny at LB and Lia at RB and have Smtih and Lindsay as your midfielders, either you get an extra midfielder or a FB which would allow us to still keep a 3 man midfield if needed.

yeh and what did he play in Melbourne?? Not bleeding CAM.

Manny is a lock at RB.

There's these  pieces of sexiness http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rp7lwIo-Q_A at 4:22

and http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=iv&src_vid=rp7lwIo-Q_A&v=3GYig2EZDuk&annotation_id=annotation_747777 at 3:19 too. Lia isn't going to be doing that.

How many right backs in the competition are better than Manny?

Wouldn't have thought that there would have been that many.

i personally don't understand why herbert doesn't give more of his all whites a break. i mean really tim myers could play right back in the a league. michael boxall who im hoping he takes a look at would be a perfect back-up for durante/sigmund. ian hogg instead of nick tsattalios (sp?) surely???

moss, paston, myers, sigmund, durante, boxall, lochhead, hogg, bertos, brockie, lia, muscat, smith, lindsay, sanchez, totori, pavlovic, ifill

3 under 21 = basalaj, fenton & somebody else

downey & pantelis meh!!!

Lindsay is one of the 21s.

Three keepers in a limited squad?

Why do they need a 2nd Left back when they have no right back?

Myers A-League quality?

well then lindsay would be the other under 21 player

basalaj yes considering the injuries paston and moss have had over the years.

tim myers is the right back and yes he could step up easily. beats putting vince lia there surely? ian hogg is the leftback but either he or lochead could play leftback or left wing. hogg can motor. he would adapt well there i think.

tsattalios is locheads back-up isn't he? why not give myers/hogg a chance instead of tsatt and griffiths?

Btw, I won't be the least bit surprised if Chris Greenacre actually ends up back on a full-time playing contract before the season starts.

If Paston gets hurt, Basalaj will probably get a injury replacement contract.

Is that the same Tim Myer's that is still trying to untangle himself after being turned inside and out twice by Totori?

Tsattalios is back in Aussie and doesn't have a contract for next season. I think Rowe could earn himself one of the u21 spots to be lochhead's understudy. As the back up CB, I wouldn't mind seeing Boxall fill the spot left by Griffiths.

The A-League has a squad limit of 23 players, but we will only sign 20-21 players. With no youth team, why pay for 2-3 extra people to just train for a year.

Does anyone seriously think that if 3 years ago we got the best RB in the ASB Prem, stuck with him and gave him a chance that he would now be any worse than sticking Lia there out of position?

TX - Manny may have to do some time at RB but that in itself has 2 problems.  1, if he was given assurances that he wouldn't play there it's bad man management.  He just signed a new contract so clearly discussions were had about where he was going to play.  2, it means we weaken ourselves in midfield even further because whilst Lia has some strengths he doesn't do what Muscat does in that position.

Our recruitment for 3 successive off seasons has been a shambles.  No plan, no imagination - we basically just look around for some familiar names or to see who else other clubs have brought down to this part of the world or released.

Recruitment has been substandard since Tony P left. Herbert's track record is poor and it's unfair on Dome to expect him to come out of a marketing background and get up to speed with recruitment with no one around him who knows what they're doing. God knows how we're going to get our recruitment shit together when Herbert becomes Director of Football.

He is all left foot, and back playing in the NSWPL because he doesn't have a contract with us for the upcoming season.
