calling a 30 year old a youngster makes you reaching for your Zimmer Frame...and I don't think anyone's saying he did speed??

Not sure whether to put this in transfer speculation or Ernie's thread, but it sounds like he's done a back-track on what he's said the last week and now says it's unlikely we'll sign anyone in the January transfer window and he's happy with the squad he's got.

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/soccer-football/news/article.cfm?c_id=86&objectid=11176068

"We haven't been looking at Kris Bright and I am pretty sure if someone comes up in January it will be unusual," Merrick said.

"I'm pretty happy to work with the squad that we've got, I think we've got a good squad."

I'm not that happy if he's decided not to try and bring someone in, or at least look at someone. Maybe an edict from Welnix?

A 27 year old Kiwi striker - ex AW - back in town looking for a new club. Bright hasn't signed with anyone, so why wouldn't Ernie invite him to trial for a week or two? What's has he got to lose?

Bright may not want to come down to Wellington just to trial.

Allegedly

Why trial or sign a guy whom is not going to be up to it? Before you shoot me down, where does he sit on the AW player level? Low.....

If Bright was that good, he could be banging them in at Waitakere to fill in some time.

Ernie clearly wants some-one better than Bright, and I agree. He has a handful of Herbert players to make decisions about in the New Year, and meantime has young players like Ridenton and Rufer to blood.

Personally sick of the "sign a Kiwi" whenever one comes available.

Bright isnt good enough

What's Alex Brosque up to these days?

Also, any Aussies in the MLS we could bring in on loan?

He is playing in the UAE.

Are you for real? This is potentially the most unnecessarily aggressive post I've ever seen.

jeepers SJ just a touch angry!?!? Ifill's injury is clearly season ending, so now is the best time to be talking about an injury replacement, hopefully we can pick up good goal scoring striker now along with the midfield player in january.

Apologies for the post. Yes a bit touchy. Point is at least let the guy get off the stretcher before condemning him to the scrap heap!.Yes my post was poorly done, but bad taste in my view to be speculating about injury replacements as he is being stretched off. At least wait until some facts are known.

Note to self, stay away from YF app after pub crawls and corporate hospitality.

Once again apologies for tone of post

Surgery today and 8-12 months rehab.

Really feel for Ifill, that's a huge layoff and will be very hard to come back to.

But does this mean Ernie needs to re-evaluate his decision not to sign anyone in the January window? With an import spot now open it could be a good time to sign an overseas striker on a short term contract.

Agreed. Any previous Victory strikers been any good that he's worked with?

Still think Killen would be decent til the end of the season, and then use the injury import spot on a midfielder.

Injury cover means you can use the injured player's chunk of the salary cap, right? And insurance will cover the injured players salary?

People like Coldplay and voted for the Nazis. You can't trust people.

Yep. We can sign an import injury replacement and can pay them what we were paying Ifill outside the cap. Hopefully Ernie is on the phone to agents this morning.

Good place to start would be him having a chat with Dragan Jetvic, he is the agent that bought Hersi, Sidnei, Petkovic and Despotovic to the A-League. That is a decent strike rate.

With the exception of Hersi, I agree

I'm absolutely gutted for him, he looked really good yesterday. On the plus side at least it's happened at a stage in the season where we can get back up and reinforcements and properly reevaluate the squad.

Well you'd assume the young striker will be a New Zealander. Hamish Watson would then appear to be the front runner. What about any other ASB Premiership players or previous age group reps? Dakota Lucas would be alright IMO.

sam worthington is talking up clapham. is that just his normal bullshit? or does this bullshit have some substance to it?

I have an amazing ability to find my way out of mazes. I'm pathological.

A lot of sympathy for Ifill, but based upon that injury he will not be signed next season. Let's assume that the Costa Ricans remain on their two year contracts. Personally, I would be fuming if Steins contract was extended. I don't think he fits in with Ernie's style and whilst hescored a goal yesterday, for a season and a half he has been been pants. I was not a Reira fan to begin with but yesterday solely focused on him and Stein. That guy has an engine and gets around the field at a decent cick as well. Well worth an import spot. Ifill and Steins wages should allow us to get anther decent midfielder and striker

Auckland will rise once more

Iffy being re-signed was always going to depend on him getting his citizenship and taking a pay cut. I wouldn't be surprised if Ernie leaves a roster spot and a respectable cap space to see how he recovers from this. He still have a couple years in the legs off the bench and we won't get his quality from another NZ option.

I think that is a good point you make there ryans rovers. If he gets his rehab right plus a pay cut he will still be ahead of any other nz player that would come to us. Worth being on the roster.

Ifill came here in 2009, so he wouldn't be eligible to be a domestic player next season.

As for someone mentioning Hamish Watson, please God no.

Its his 5th season in the A-League, so nothing wrong with your maths.

Yeah I'm not sure I agree with you Boxy unless he has left the country for a period, then you would wait until he becomes eligible. He becomes eligible in mid 2014 unless someone has anything else (and he obviously holds an NZ passport)

Yep. I'm a numpty. Carry on.

so assuming iffy comes back for a year - to finish off his career in style as a Kiwi - and assuming the costa ricans stay - I hope they do, cunningham is getting better and better and Carlos will once his family arrives. I'd like to see Stein stay, sure he hasn't scored massive amounts of goals but he does provide some good support. Reira holds the fourth import spot......Add a new lead the line score 20 goals a season striker from some far flung place in Europe and add a new box to box midfielder and we are set....
