If you look at the last three "big name" Marquees Kewell, ADP and Heskey ( I would not classify Ono as a big name Marquee), none of those three signings have assisted in their clubs reaching the finals and despite an initial spike in Crowd numbers they seem to have fallen away as the novelty factor has worn off. New Castle did sell a heap of Season passes but IIRC they were at stupidly low prices.

Sydney basically had to ditch Carle to get ADP.  Personally I would have preferred to keep Carle get another player about his standard not bothered with ADP and kept some change to boot.

Based on recent evidence, I would say it is difficult to fault Welnix logic on this issue.

Definitely agree with you RE: the jury being out on marquee signings necessarily improving their team - I'd argue Del Piero got Sydney wins but that doesn't necessarily improve the team (if that makes sense).
The reason I'd advocate a marquee for the Phoenix is primarily a bum on seats proposition - if absolutely nothing else, it'd finally see an end to the dismissive reasoning for low crowds that was trotted out this season - "It's too cold/the city's away on holiday" etc. Feel free to correct my stats, but the only time I recall the crowd topping the 10K mark (again, concede that I might be off here) was Round 1, when everyone wanted the chance to see Del Piero play. Hell, there was an air of curiosity when Simon Elliot signed on for a bit.

Disagreeing on the Carle contention, but that's solely and only because I couldn't stand him - for some reason just the sight of him put the wind up me!

Fair enough, but I did not say that the Marquees did not improve their team. In ADP's case he certainly did, and towards the end of Kewells time he probably did from what they were earlier on. As I said,  the certainly had an initial spike in Crowd numbers but unless that is backed up with results it will be just that.

It's Carle's hair that creates the hostility. He needs a haircut!

Thats pathetic. Just another example of why a lot of members don't bother with these forums anymore.

The thing that I'm not sure about with a Phoenix marquee is for someone to have the genuine name recognition that we need, we're so far away from being able to afford that, I can't see it working.  We just need to focus on getting better than average A-League players on board - which we've managed intermittently

Think in a sense, we need to create our own marquees. For example Broich at Roar was a relatively unknown for most fans - but now people go to see him play. Sure he's not as big as ADP or Heskey, but I think thats probably the most realistic way for our club to create personalities and quality players.
like we did with Ifill

Exactly. We are unlikely to get a "big name" like ADP or Heskey and besides the effectiveness of these big names in producing results on the park for teams has not been great.

Victory set to release Ferreira, Velaphi & Gallaway

Hope to god we dont go for Velaphi...

But what about Diogo Ferreira?

Young RB / DM - not a world beater but probably better than other RB's we've tried

Looking through that Video of Goals of the Season for last year, was amazing how many of them were scored by or against us.  9 out of the 20.

Victory were playing NYL kids, rather than use him at RB. He just isn't very good. I would rather we see if Roux is available.

Diogo Ferreira is a decent footballer - better than Foschini etc. Not great, though.

Again it comes down to not being able to have Super stars in every position. Is he an improvement on what we presently have? Yes. Therefore a possible target at the right price.

I have not seen enough of Roux and it is apparent he has real talent and a future, not sure if he is ready to step up to a starting position in Round 1 of next season.

For those that wanted Miller, Glory have offered him a new deal along with McGarry & Cordoba. Hasn't accepted it yet.

Gallaway? As in Scott Galloway the young RB? Cos I'd have him in a heartbeat, I think you're meaning Gallagher though.

Interesting. Does this suggest that he wants to go to Asia/Middle East? Or might he sign for another A-;League club (Us) on better terms?

James Meyer released from Brisbane along with Nijland and Jurman

Would take all three, but obvious Nijland is an import and we don't need him.

Not so sure about Jurman. He was woeful at Roar, but that was mainly because their style of play really did not suit him.

Didn't realise Meyer was 26, thought he was younger. Might be worth a trial to see what the new coach thinks.

Chris Greenacre to Wharfies...... Capital Prem or Masters?

Saw a bit of Meyer a coupla yrs back - a lot of ppl will be disappointed he hasn't kicked on. Perhaps a change of environment will do him good. Particularly at the right price (we don't need another Nick Ward).

Meyer is average imo. Scores a few decent goals but doesn't provide much else when he's on. We've already got Brockie for that.

Ferrante (mailnly because of the Hooked on Ferrante song that we would be able to revive.)

Masters it seems - http://www.nzherald.co.nz/sport/news/article.cfm?c_id=4&objectid=10878318

Brilliant.... He will be playing on Karori 3 at 2:30. My lot are on No 2 at the same time.
Will have to set up a Greenacre M'Lord chant!
Question is will Karori Masters 1 have a bigger crowd than their Cap Prem side also playing at 2:30 on Karori No 1?
