Right backs - HN will hate for mentioning it and I guess the fact that we didn't pick him up last year may mean Ricki doesn't think he's capable but I still rate James Pritchet. He's got pace, still reasonably young and thought he was one of ACFC's better players at the WCC

mmm...should I delete that...

I'd rather Plodder, I may even rather Old at Right Back.

I actually think he's an okay NZFC player and was a good right winger for the Kingz.  No idea how he keeps getting All Whites caps at Right back.

I only follow the Chinese Premier League here occasionally, however Beijing Guo'an are usually one of the better teams and would usually be rated above Changchun Yatai. However Changchun gave Adelaide a stiff test last night in the Champions League, leading Aurelio Vidmar to comment:

"There's no question that they are technically stronger than us, physically stronger than us and we found that last year with Shandong (a past AFC opponent),"

If Gao Leilei featured in the Beijing Guo'an starting lineup for any length of time you'd therefore have to assume he is well and truely up to it from a league standard point of view.

Ricky Herbert was on the Victorian premier league TV show last night. Scouting for players here. Strikers? I think one of the top goal scorers is Richie Cardozo who played for waitak a few years ago.

What do you guys think of these players:
Dez Giraldi - Experience in Europe with Empoli and is on  the up at just 21 years of age. Has all the good attributes to help Smeltz up front.
Scott Tunbridge - Good experienced striker and comes from a good club.Might be looking to aim higher though.
Marcinho- Cretive midfielder with a good eye fo goal
David Mulligan- Would slot in perfectely in our backline

Dez Giraldi would be an ok squad striker but no more than that.
Tunbridge is mediocre personified.
Marcinho isn't worth it - misses about 10 sitters a game
Mulligan Sounds like he has a bad worth ethic and I don't really rate him that high anyway

Latest 4-4-2 rumour;

Christian Vieri To A-League

Vieri who is playing in Italy with Fiorentina is heading to the A-league to be the long awaited marquee striker for Wellington Phoenix.

If only it were true.

As long as Vieri has lost his penchant for tantrums I'd welcome him here, but he seems to be doing alright for Fiorentina last time I checked. His whines are pretty hilarious though.

What exactly do you love about him? The fact he's lightweight or the fact he only has a left foot?

Three for me, and two for them.

Vieri? pigs might fly.
Soupy, if he wasn't good enough for the Knights, and he doesn't even start consistently at FZFC level, well...
Mully, I always thought he was a tenacious sort of player, but not as classy as Johnno.
Pritchet? ??!!@
Bazeley, I doubt it, Ricki had the chance to pick him up when the Knights folded, but chose not to. I liked Baze as a player actually, the comments about him being out of position...  nearly always happened because he was trying to cover for some crap centre defending inside him. The Knights only got that sorted when they got Tambo and Buncey together for that last round.
A striker to partner Smeltz is what we need, but I'm not sure what sort I'd be looking at. Is Smeltz the hold it up player, so do we need the pacy runner, of do we need the big receiver, setter up striker, like Emblen did so well at the Knights?

Oi Oi Edgecumbe... lets have a clean sheet

Regarding Vieri, agreed. prbably have more hissiny fits than goals anyway. Does 442 have any credibility???
On Smeltz's stike partner, why box a player into a role, pretty easy for oppositions to work stuff like that out. Hope we get a good one, good being , tackler, passer, finisher and someone who works with 10 other players. Pretty simple

Wellington Phoenix FC have signed midfielder Jeff Campbell on a one year contract.

Wellington are also eyeing Ben Sigmund but have encouraged striker Jarrod Smith to take up a contract offer from Toronto fc

This article has been provided by:
Daryl of Upper Hutt

FourFourTwo Belief Factor: 8/10 - Is Campbell ready to step up to the A-League? His record's not bad.

This is the first I've heard of Campbell being in the frame.

Well, we though that Ferrante had some bad misses - at least he didn't do it every single game! Marcinho was Ferrante x100 without the passing ability

The greatest comedy show in town is Fouplusfour's rumour section.

What drugs are they on. Christian Viera to the Phoenix....last year he transfered to Fiorintina for  2.75 million euros...thats 5 million NZ dollars.

I still think that Joel Porter is our most probable signing. Right age, background, skills and comes from a level we can afford. Tony P said its 50/50. I guess Porter will make up his mind once the UK season finishes in May.

Christion Viera would be a hoot though!! The guy is as mad as meat axe! See that photo in wikipedia...he looks like a serial killer!!

hahah exactly, marcinho is many kinds of crap tbh, and is a liability, just like reinaldo was for 99% of the season, between those two was probably the reason the roar didn't go any further
the most ridiculous thing was that after scoring 1 good goal in the semi and marcinho scoring a goal against 10 man phoenix that was handed to him, the aussie commentators started talking like they were amazing. such bs

A week old I know but an interesting snippet from the Hartlepool mail;

"But Joel sadly, could be on his way out of town, having attracted the interest of Australian League outfit, Wellington Phoenix.

Porter, signed by Neale Cooper in 2003, is a popular figure and given the former Socceroo's brilliance, losing a player of his ability is a prospect fans will find hard to stomach.

Out of contract in the summer at the Vic, Porter would not comment on the speculation."

It may be wishful thinking but kind of smells like a Letter of Intent has been signed but Joel is obliged to keep quiet until the season is over. Then again ....who knows ?
He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)

Joel Porters signing sounds like one more of those " can't confirm, but won't deny" transfers. Porter coming to the Phoenix is more than a strong rumour now.

I reckon we will see him in a Phoenix shirt this season. Really exciting....he will be the last important piece in what is shaping up to be an excellent looking attack. After watching Porters "highlights clip " on You tube he looks to be the real deal. Scores a lot of goals in tight situations, good in the air, good pace and a natural lefty. He will complement Smeltzy brilliantly.

Can't wait until he signs and the season starts!!!!

I know a lot of people were hanging out for a glam marquee striker...but you have to be realistic. The club is only one year old. We finished last in the comp. You could blow a fortune on a "name" and not get much out of it.

Hartlepools last game is Sat May 3 - I hope we don't have to wait that long for confirmation Porter is coming to the Nix - if it is Porter.
