I can see it now...

Dear Loyalgunner,
Thank you for reminding me that Jan Koller is still playing.  I have talked to Ricki and he is keen to sign him up.
Regards
Tony P.

No, I don't think it is remotely likely.  But I'm bored and there were no actual proper rumours apart from the old Joel Porter one.

The more I sit here and think about it the more I reckon he's already signed for Miron the Moron.

It's a bit odd that Miron is going to see Hartlepool play if that is the case. I'd say he is a huge chance of going there though, especially because Ricki isn't there to talk to him face to face like Miron is.

Yeah I think they went to Europe, too bad they didn't even bring anyone back.

Needn't have bothered with the first two really.

Though I have to say I though Gao would be a very good signing...

Mulligan, Gao... McKain.
Forgot about that , though I probably should of said anyone decent back. (With the exception of McKain). But anyway I don't think Mulligan was attracted through that trip more likely through his time with the All Whites and Gao through his time with the Knights. We hardly discovered someone that was unheard or had a low profile in this part of the world.wellyphoenixfan2008-11-26 11:32:36

Yeah...Jan Koller would be awsome!!!

He is 2.02 tall...6ft 7.5. Thats super tall. Even Lockhead would struggle to get a cross over him!

Just what the Phoenix need, a big target man. Then all we need is a fast nippyl forward to score off the scraps.

Hymen Blimburg...go ferk yourself. We saw Porter first. Go and find your own players!!!!!!

I heard the incredible Hulk was pretty tall. He'd be a good signing imo. That's what we need- A big targetman.

Koller started out as a goalkeeper before he became a striker.

Brush up on his stopping skills and we'd have two reserves for the price of one. And a spare slot on the bench for an extra player. That's gotta be a bargain!

I vote we buy him.

guys let's not forget that when you buy a player you can't predict how well he'll settle in his new city and new league. For example I think that both Gao and Mulligan are good players. Gao's got the pace and the skills. Mulligan has often surprised me. Unfortunately he only plays well when he plays with the AW's..and as for Gao..do I need to get into it???

I think a 1 in 3 ration is properly right..
Clebo..meh
George..meh

Felipe..half and half

Daniel..awesome..

That's why I think we need to sign at least 2-3 GOOD strikers for next season. We know that Costa's got the stuff, though he's a bit young. Don't like Kwasnik that much. So in case Porter shoots blank, we need to have someone else as back up. And if we get 2 new strikers and they both play well together..then even more options for us.

Edit: A 35y.o. marquee?? I'm absolutely AGAINST it. What if he pulls a muscle on day 1??? And you paid him sh*t loads to play for you and he's out for 6-8 games..what a waste. Sure, that's a risk with every player, but i'd rather get some young, talented guy say from Brazil!! Or if we sign someone from Europe, please no over 32!

Agree 100% on the need for 2-3 strikers. With Smeltzy going, it's urgent.

Talent from Brazil? Good idea. But Daniel, Ricki and others from the Nix made a scouting trip to South America last year and came back empty handed. Seems amazing. There must be hundreds of competent strikers who are not EPL Premiere standard, but would be damn good for the A-League.

And if we get them young enough and they have the talent, they may take out citizenship with a view to playing international football if they're  up to All White standard (as Daniel hopes to do).

That could be a good carrot to hold out to young guys. Possibly a better standard of life, the chance to be a big fish in a smaller footballing bowl, plus the chance to maybe strut their stuff on the world stage. Something that would be beyond them if they stayed with their country of birth.

I hope the Nix go back to South America again. Or have scouts there on the lookout. Too much talent not to try and snare some of it.

no one ever said that buying players is like going to the supermarket. I think that if Ricky, Tony P and Daniel went to Brazil and came back empty handed there is a reason. And i'm very happy with last year's signings. But if we look at next year..then we need to cover the areas where we most need it..i.e. Up front!

I still keep my hopes up that we'll get another 1 or 2 awesome brazilians, but am just as happy to sign some good Oz strikers..because without Smeltzy it's gonna be hard next year.

I don't want the Nix to be next Jets!! that's all!

I think Tony P has already said that strikers will have to come from overseas as there isn't the quality available within the A-League

Normo's coming home

I actually would mind winning the league this season and then lose all our best player and come last the next year. It doesn't sounds like much of a plan. May as well all go on a big holiday..
Terry S. has been saying that we're here for the long haul. Well, the journey will be much more comfortable with another couple of strikers signed for next season

Muscat signed on for the 2009/10 season.

Happy for the guy - he's worked hard and earned the contract.

"The signing of Muscat brings to 13 the number of current Phoenix players contracted by the club for next season and beyond. As well as Muscat, the re-signed players are: Daniel, Ben Sigmund, Tim Brown, Tony Lochhead, Andrew Durante, Jon McKain, Leo Bertos, Michael Ferrante, David Mulligan, Vince Lia, Troy Hearfield and Costa Barbarouses."

Remaining unsigned;

CONTRACT EXPIRES END OF THIS SEASON:
#1) Mark Paston
#2) Jeremy Christie
#5) Karl Dodd
#8) Vaughan Coveny
#9) Shane Smeltz
#12) Richard Johnson
#15) Adam Kwasnik
#19) Greg Draper
#20) Glen Moss

With 13 signed, 2 goalies to sign and, I think, 2 strikers (2x Smeltz), an attacking midfielder (a Fred) and a defensive midfielder (a Ross Aloisi) to get that leaves 4 places for the unsigned existing squad members. I think Tony / Ricki will hold back 2 places to help manage the salary cap (2 strikers won't be cheap) and keep options open for plugging any gaps.

That would leave 2 spots for existing unsigned squad members (excluding Paston).

Tough on Plods but I don't want to see Drapes released. How badly do we want to keep Dodd given that we already have McKain, Durante and Siggy and CBs for next year?
Say we keep the lads in bold, that takes us to 17, add in two strikers and an AM, that takes us to twenty. + a 'keeper = 21. That leaves space for DM if we need it, plus 1 more spot for any positions we need to fill mid-season

CONTRACT EXPIRES END OF THIS SEASON:
#1) Mark Paston
#2) Jeremy Christie
#5) Karl Dodd
#8) Vaughan Coveny
#9) Shane Smeltz
