You've just put Tony P up with God

On that point - if God is with us then why is he not at training?

Being on trial would indicate a lack of age and/or experience and/or ability and/or opportunity, would it not?

Thats not to say they wouldn't be up to it however... will be interesting to see where they're from - and good on the club for trialling when possible, rather than just taking a punt :)

Or the player wants to check out our wind, our rain, and our changing rooms.

Tosh !!

You'd be unhappy if the club got someone out of the blue like the experience of the first season (bring back George, and Cleberson indeed) and now speculate that because we get someone to trial here it means they are useless.

All the other clubs in the A League are trialling players, is it the same for them?? The English season and most of the others are over, so we get to have a look at them here.

I think it's a good move, have a bit of faith in the club

I never said it wasn't I guess I was hoping for the kind of signing that we don't have to trial- One that's already proven at a level equal to or above the A-league.

However, that doesn't mean trialling a player automatically means they'll be struggling to meet our standards. Ben Sigmund was on trial and ended up being our best defender last year.

I'd like to know the club were trialling as many possible signings as they could, even if it is just to scope out things like attitude, how they would perfrom in different positions etc.

Says in that Dom Post article that Crowther is close to signing. That's good news to get that second keeper locked in.

great news about the two trialing strikers. With their arrival and the new keeper everything is starting tocome together nicely.

Some people are concerned about the calibre of the trialists. But I think its a smart move. They are not from England so there might be language issues to sort out. Obviously the club wants to see how these guys will fit into the Phoenix structure...both on and off the field.

I reckon that the trial is more about us checking them out rather than them looking at us. if they are travelling 120000 miles then they are obviously keen on a job.

We definately need something to generate a bit of buzz around the club or Knights - like crowds are a real possibility this season.

While still remaining optimistic on what is to come, I haven't seen any steps forward in signings, just sideways at best, while we watch other sides attract top signings. I am with the folk who don't hold much optimism for trialists, though again Siggy is the best argument for any trialist. I fear it is the Wellington factor that is the unnatractive part.
The argument that the Steele netball side can attract top players is a different case and irrelevant. They attract other Kiwis who fly for game days from up north, they don't have to battle an international market. The Waikato Magic do the same with three players, two from Wellington.

I have learnt, along with others, not to judge until we see the players perform, so I personally can't wait to see Greenacre in action. I'm hoping he knows others - there's nothing better than another player's endorsement (when things go well) so he potentially could be helpful, but not til next season after he's had a taste.

If Adelaide, Newcastle and the Central Coast can attract players, we certainly can. Obviously the ACL thing holds us back though.

So does the cold, the wet, and the wind not experienced in Adelaide, Newcastle and Central Coast.

Its no longer a problem.

The players we've been looking at resided in England. It's not like they wouldn't be used to a bit of Wellington weather. valeo2009-05-26 13:40:39

Location for the Nix is a disadvantge and a challenge but not an excuse - a passionate franchise owner (we are blessed with just that), a coach with a good reputation, a positive team culture, on field success etc etc all help to overcome the disadvantage of location - not forgetting $s.

The Fury got Fowler to go to Townsville !!

My concern is we have had a long run of bad press; lost 2 of our best players, came up short on UK recruitment drive, lost sponsor, turned down by Kruse etc.

We really need to turn it around - today's headline on season membership really didn't help. Talking to team mates in the weekend many were going to renew this week so why the Dom Post chose to  run that story in the middle of the renewal period and why we didn't say renewals were coming in at a steady rate ...... ???

I think there is still a huge amount of latent support for the Nix in Wellington and it will be a case of slowly rebuilding the interest; new keeper (great), new striker (not the seemingly endless progress reports but an actual signing), release of new kit .......... and, most importantly, starting the season off with some wins, preferably playing entertaining football.

If we get the season off to a flyer I can see good crowds returing -sure $s are tight but many are sick of the doom and gloom and are looking for a good news story - Nix in 2009/10.

He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)

Having spent plenty of time in Adelaide I can assure you that they get very similar winters to us, temperature and all. They do have it over us in the summer though, of course.

Newcastle has the John's boys so maybe appealing to someone looking for a little drug fuelled orgy action...

Could/should/would we see if we can get Vignaroli while Newcastle are still trying to figure out what is happening with Joel Griffiths? They seem pretty impressed with him.

Going on what some American travellers have been telling me- NZ is a much more relaxed place to live. There is a lot of variety in the landscape, and in summer you can walk ten metres without dripping in sweat. Which obviously makes it a slighly more attractive place to play football for those used to winter leagues.

The night life isn't huge, but if that is what the footballer is deciding the contract on, sheesh. Also it is out of the spotlight. football isn't on the front pages here. You can walk down the street and have a bit of privacy, comparatively speaking.

I think we are looking good and everyone should be a bit more positive about the season ahead!

We have got rid of players who were a bit past it. Johnson.. Coveny, or getting no game time.. Draper.
We have cover for Moss leaving in Paston and this new keeper.

Smeltz was really our only firepower up front last year. But we have now got a proven goal scorer in Greenace. Plus some young talent with one of the two NZFC boys (Krishna/Luis), and one international striker being talked about. And Costa with another year and more game time under his belt.

We all know our attack was a bit boring last year.. so we have gone and got a great attacking Midfielder in Diego.

Plus who knows, Fred might be back.

I think we have already improved on the squad from last year, there will be great competition for places in the game day squad. Lia back.. Mulligan wanting to prove himself etc etc. Looking forward to this year a lot!

Excellent post.

The weather has ferk all to do with where footballers play. If that was the case there would be no football in Russia and the Scandinavian countries. Shaktar just won the Europa cup or whatever its called. They fielded 4 Brazilian attacking players. They are based in the Ukraine....which has shiite weather. Most of Europe has a more miserable winters than NZ. You should try winters in Melbourne.

Recruiting for the phoenix is a hard sell coz we are so far away from anywhere and there is little known about the football culture in the country. Plus the Phoenix are very new. Its a big punt for a player as everything is so unknown. that DOES NOT make it impossible!!!!!

Could'nt agree more about that negative Dom-post article. The story should have been all about the two new striking trialists coming from Europe. Why has this been such a hushed up story...where are they from? who are they?

The negativity surrounding the slow ticket sales does not help. I get really pissed off with all the doom and gloom that often surrounds this country. Fred normally does a good job on the Dom Post.....he deserves a slap around the head for that story!!!!!

The club needs a positive buzz about the upcoming season....if that happens then the ticket sales will look after themselves.

Well said. I agree wholeheartedly with this, though maybe I'm just being over-optimistic. Sure as hell beats being over-pessimistic.
