So how many goals do we need to let thru before you'd make defensive changes? Or would these 'best players' give us 4 goals a game? (which we'd need if we're gonna let 3 thru as we are now).

We saw him all last season....

Yes yes I know.

It was a roundabout way of saying "Why the f**k is Daniel only getting half games this year!!"  I guess it's because we have 'better' players this year, like the ones on display last night..

The most pathetic performance I've ever seen.  Could any of them be bothered and did they want to be there?  What happened to our high level of fitness that everyone's been talking about?

I've changed my mind on Daniel, even though he's lazy, he and Lochhead combine well (and Lochhead was miserable last night) so my starting XI would go as follows:

                                Paston

Mulligan         Sigmund      Durante         Lochhead

Bertos            Ferrante      Brown            Daniel

                      Smeltz         Costa

When's Brown back?  He'll add a lot of extra grunt into our midfield, something we desperately need.  I know everybody says Costa's only 18 and won't add anything, well, fact of the matter is he's desperate to prove people wrong, and he wants to do well (something that can't be said for anybody yesterday) so give him a start, and midway through second half put Coveny on for him.

I like Ricki as a coach, but this is really getting horrendous.  We have a brilliant team on paper, and if in a few games things haven't changed then Terry will have to take a serious look at whether or not he should be coaching.

Many more performances like that and we'll be dead last.

It'd be interesting to hear Tony P's thoughts on the match.

I think it must also be said, I enjoyed hassling Ahmed El**ch last year, but he did far better than any of our midfielders are doing at the moment.

I'd be happy with this line up with Hearfield starting. Everytime the kid has played he has looked hungry and keen and that's what this team needs - some passion.

These players are good enough to do well but there seems to be no fire in the belly and that's down to Herbert, Durante and the other senior players. Aloisi gave the Nix some steel - someone has to step up and fill the Aloisi void.

Our team needs some leadership !!!

Also, if things continue in this fashion I say we give Jeremy Christie another chance.

He is nowhere near as bad as everybody says he is.

If Jezza can stay on his feet, not commit any dumb 2 footed lunges in advantageous situations for the opposition, develop a short ball game to match his well over-used long ball (sorry direct football) game and generally keep his mouth shut then yeah sure, he can play... Agent 472008-08-31 12:16:34

Why not play 5 at the back?
I think it would suit our players, it means lochy and mully/manny can get foward at will as there should be cover for them with the other 3 at the back. It also allows for one of the centre backs to come out and shut down the ball in that hole just in front of the backline.
This does make it harder to play the offside trap but hopefully with an extra player at the back, the players can share the workload of tracking players.

Also agree on the Aloisi comments, I posted on here before the Adelaide game about how much we need him this season and it showed again last night. I'd say it's just about time to use up that extra spot for a marquee player before the season becomes a write-off.
Interestingly we have only kept 1 of our 4 imports from last season (Daniel).

i know its not really an excuse for the performance but I have inside word that 3 or 4 of the starting 11 were bed ridden midweek.Covs was flown over to cover for 3 players who were 50/50.

Let's hope that was the case, as that's the only thing that makes the performance slightly less bad.

In no small part I imagine because Newcastle and Central Coast played the final last season with virtually no imports in either side.

I don't know whether you are saying this is a good thing or bad thing but i don't see that as being a great rationale for us only having 1. Sure the Jets won the thing and the Mariners were pretty decent as well but its an entirely different dynamic.
I really do hope the club haven't said well these guys did it so we'll do it

Things clearly run deeper than the players. All these guys are professionals and know all about closing players down and keeping the team shape, passing the ball, not letting players turn on you etc etc. To suddenly have the whole team let the opposition stand on the ball with no pressure, run at you at will with no tacklers and not run in to any space when we've got the ball is a lack of motivation and/or direction.

I really do hope there is credence to the rumor someone suggested that 3 oe 4 of the team were bed ridden in the middle of last week, it would at least mean those players had excuses for a piss poor effort.bopman2008-08-31 14:36:36

Agree with the points above. I'm a Jafa and a big Nix fan. I watched the game on television last night as Ive done every game thats been broadcast since the club started.

I cant remember the last time I witnessed such a gutless, inept performance from a sporting team I follow. (Okay, the Black Caps on a bad day come close.)

I agree with loyalgunner. Give Costa a run. See where he's at. And Smeltz will recover and score more goals. Some of our make-shift strikers (midfielders) will chip in with the odd goal now and then. Maybe our "crack" (make that "cracked") defence will finally get their act together. But tinkering with the current squad won't fix the rot.

If we're not putting pressure on the opposition at the other end, they can run at us all night with impunity as they did last night. And we will continue to lose. Big time.

The Nix are within a couple of games of becoming a joke. A TV commentator last night called the first half worst than anything he could remember from the NZ Knights. Does it get much worse than that?

If ever we needed to face the fact its now: we desperately need one, make that two strong, quality strikers who will run at the opposition all night and put the fear of defeat into the other team. What our opponents are currently doing to us.

Smeltzy can't do it on his own. (And we got hammered last week even though he played.)

Remember - we all started the season believing we really had a sniff of a top 4 placing.

At the moment the only thing I 'sniff', is the scent of a team ready to come apart at the seams.

The piss poor performances won't be fixed by f**king about with the formation or who plays where - the team lacks leadership and, because of that, it seems to lack character and unity - I don't sense the players are really committed to each other and the cause.

The buck stops with R Herbert - if he can't build a winning culture and team with the talent he's got and the support and latitude he's had from the owner he's gone. I'd personally give him 3 more games to turn it around.

exactly - you can dick around with the formation/positions all you want, but surely it's better to stick with one and try make it work - so all the players know what role they should be providing

After reading pages and pages of truth all I can say is the writing was on the wall half way through game one. As people have said after this (another) piss poor effort everything points to RH. Sorry but thats the facts. Our team has no idea what thay are doing, and why is that? Leadership or lack of. sh*t surely we should have been UP for this game but once again take the field as garbage. ( Half time didn't change anything )  Durante was right in his after much summary. That being the case, what do these guys practise? Tactics, nope. Formation and positional play, nope. Motovation, passion and desire, nope. Skills, nope. What gets said in the sheds before and at half time ? ( forget full time, it's toooooooooooo late mate.)
So Ricki, what do you actually do thats of value then?
Can we use or marquee spot for a coach

Really ?

So who are Sydney's four players and who are the Central Coasts ?

OK Hard News - fair point.  Certainly three of the major threats for the top four all have, namely, Melbourne, Adelaide and Queensland.  In my view, their imports are a huge boost to their likely success.  Whether or not you include McFlynn and Enfield as imports in Sydney's squad (you suggest they are boderline), Sydney arguably has the creme de la creme of the Aussie players and probably is the side least in need of imports.  They have also recruited a marquee player in John Aloisi who could still easily be plying his trade in Europe.  Central Coast has the German import, Andre Gumprechet, and possibly Adrian Caceres (he's definitely Argentinian, but I'm not sure if he's classed as an import).

Regardless of all that, I still think it may have been a mistake for the Phoenix not to have filled their full import quota.  A couple of more better players (particularly up front) than they have now could have made the difference.

Is it to early to mention these names Eddie Krncevic, my choice, Branko & Nick Theo.

I hope you guys come good there are lots of people in OZ have been thinking the Nix's are the real deal, on paper one of the best sides in the league with an expectation of crowds growing and bringing NZ football along with you .

What you say is justs so blindingly obvious scribbler.  It's just unbelievable that we've gone into an A-League season with one proven striker.  Even when we do play well from the back, we totally run out of ideas in the final third of the pitch and are outclassed by the opposing defence.
