Early for a thread on this game to start I know, but one major selection issue for this match is in central midfield.  Vince Lia picked up his fifth yellow card yesterday, so will miss this game through suspension.

Thoughts on his replacement?  McKain unlikely to be ready by then.

Fred? If he really does arrive. Caseres would be the obvious choice with Brown being the DM

Do we have any other central midfielders then? I must have forgotta who the others are. Would hearfield or Caceres have to fill in for the game.

Ricki was talking about Mulligan playing in there.

I'd rather have you as the midfield enforcer.

Cleans boots and removes cobwebbs for that one last hurrah.

Who knows, Mulligan might be a decent answer. He's not that bad. Give him a chance.

Mulligan played very well at DM in the preseason game against Mainland and also by all accounts against Melbourne.

Start Caceres.  If you're going to do it, do it against the Jets.

Yeah I'd rather Mulligan than Ferrante, atleast Mulligan can score.   Otherwise I'd call for Caceres perhaps, if he can play centrally.  I feel like our midfield wasnt the best last game anyway. Fred would be great and I can sede him definitely in there instead of Brown full time now.

Suppose Diego's floating around while we are talking about players that came in with a decent rep and have disappointed.

Judging purely on last nigthts performances i would like to see:

               Paston
Manny Dura Siggy Lochy
                  Lia
Daniel     Caceres       Bertos
         Ifill        Greenacre

Subs:
Costa
Crowther
Hearfield
Brown

dear man2biron,

please read the original post and note that lia is suspended for this game.

cheers,

me.

ps:

        Paston
Muscat Sigmund Durante Lochhead
            Brown
Bertos     Caceres   Daniel
        Costa Ifill

Bench:
The Crow
Hearfield
Ferrante
Rojas

Team a much too attacking, but it keeps mulligan and ferrante off the park. ferrante included on the bench in case brown is injured/sent off as we have no other choice.

pps: greenacre omitted for obvious reasons.craiga2009-11-09 15:35:52

Sorry what are the obvious reasons that greenacre is omitted?

I'd go for
                 Paston                                 //   Crowther
Muscat Sigmund Durante  Lochead          //   Mulligan
           Brown (defense mode)                //   Hearfield
Bertos        Caceres            Daniel          //   Barbarouses
          Greenacre   Ifill

Brown to take over Lia's role. And knowing him, he will get a Yellow this game too. Ifill up front simply because after the few weeks of him adapting, he started scoring goals galore, and now keeps doing it when he is pushed forward, so with two/ 3 other competent attacking wide players then he should do well. I actually like this concept quite a lot, but would ideally use Lia instead of Timmy.

Think Caceres, Bertos and Daniel can all keep switching all over the show to totally confuse the sh*t out of the Planes, as long as Ifill can keep forward then this will be rediculkously dangerous.

Greenie looked pretty badly injured to me. Hopefully he'll be ok - international break is coming at the right time for both him and Ifill I think

Mhmm, was thinking the same thing, what are the obvious reasons for omitting Greenie craiga ?

I'd go for:
                             1
2         18                       22        3
                            6
7/11                                                  8
                         14/Fred ?
             9                           23

Bench
20
13
11/7
16/14

Why on earth are we playing Newcastle already again ? Weird scheduling.
Take a 4-1-2-1-2 formation. Brown holding, Caceres or Fred if we get him attacking. Ifill on the wing put if he feels like it he can go wherever he wants to. Bertos or Daniel on the other side. Greenacre and C.Barb up front. Worked last time we played the Jests, hopefully it will work again.

I'll go for an early pick of 2-1. Ifill and Greenacre.

Edit: Well, if Greenacres injured then that is fairly obvious reason to omit him but personally I wouldn't omit him on form.

mainly that 'he runs all day' is not a good enough reason to keep carrying someone.

that and his injury didn't look goodcraiga2009-11-09 16:30:47

So you would have Costa in there but not Greenacre based on the last game?

From what I remember it was a softish yellow. We have a few out of form players that can fill that role.

costa looked flat compared to his last few appearances, but greenacre was just his usual self (i am dodging your question).

tbh i'm just trying to stir. we don't have anyone else who can do the role he's being asked to do, so he should still be on the park every week.

unfortunately the 'best he have' isn't that good.

I don't know how far away McKain is from full fitness but surely he would be the best option to cover Lia's absence in the midfield - even 70 minutes would be good. I'm not that keen on the Brown/McKain combo but better the devil you know than....Ferrante or Mulligan.

If not McKain then I'd take Ferrante. He's got a good terrier-like workrate, if not great physical presence.

re centre mid i'd go with Ferrante or Mully with Caceres on the bench

depends how Mully and Feerante have looked in training

for my Caceres might be a bit of a luxury starting in centre -mid away from home (he doesn't quite seem to have the willingness to work and I'm not sure of his ability to close players down/tackle)

I would have the same line-up as last week but instead of Lia I'd have Mulligan and I'd also have Paston in goal.  Ferrante on the bench for Mulligan (or McKain if fit).  I'd introduce Caceres earlier (say, hour mark) and Bertos not long after that.

We need these three points.  Three points away is something we haven't achieved in all too long.

I'd go with Mulligan too. But I'm thinking maybe he'd be a better replacement playing Brown's role. Ferrante can put his body on the line in Lia's spot, but  ever since that Perth game in round 3 when he practically gave Sikora the goal, I've not wanted him anywhere near the midfield

Diego hasn't had a fair go.  This is what I would do if I was Ricki...but then again it is obvious why I am not Ricki

Paston

Muscat - Sigmund - Durante - Lochhead

Brown

Ifill  ------------------------------------------Bertos

Diego/Barbarouses ------- Daniel

Greenacre

Subs:

- Crowther
- Barbarouses/Diego
- Caceres (Been impressive but probably best as impact player)
- Mulligan (I don't like him but would need SOME defensive cover on bench in that formation and he's the only one ...hopefully wouldn't be needed)

Ok, Greenacre is probably favourite to start ahead of Costa. Neither were great on the weekend, but Greenacre is more likely to play because he's more experienced. Personally I think Costa is more likely to create goals though...

Bertos really has to be in there. Don't know that much about Caceres in the middle myself, but reckon he could go alright there. Daniel has played centrally before, so I don't mind if they were to swap. If whoever else is in the middle ain't going to get back enough then I'd like Brown to play a bit more defensive to cover where Lia might be otherwise.

FFS how many times does it have to be said, Costa will NOT start in place of Greenacre. The only way would be if Greenie was carrying an injury from the Perth game.

Diego will get his 2nd chance in place of Lia and Bertos (on the right) in for Costa.

Yea, I said that Greenacre will probably start ahead of Costa. As I think did craiga.

Don't personally see why Diego would start. Seems curious to me that Caceres would be on the bench the last couple of weeks, play well and then not start instead of Diego who hasn't been seen since he was dragged before halftime for having a shocker.

Both Diego and Caceres never track back - can't really afford to have them in the team with the likes of Daniel imo

Sorry, but I think Diego has had a fair go
But if he's trained ok then maybe we'll see him back. If he's a sulky type then he may be gone for good.

agreed. Would rather have.. (this is a big call), but i would rather have Mulligan than Diego now to be honest. He offers similar aspects to Lia and has actually played well in ALL the games he has had this season. not at RB, no way! but he can tackle(probably as well as Lia (i.e. will make fouls and pick up cards)) and he can also score, which is something Diego rarely has done throughout his career.

Anyway, Diego cant defend
