disappointing but not as gut wrenching as some of those late goal concessions that cost us 2 points

Costa and Iffil might prove a good partnership

shaky start with those injuries - but to be fair Sydney took us apart on a few ocassions

glad we came out and offered a bit more in the 2nd half

not a great football weekend apart from the U-17s

One thing frustrates me and not just this game. That is the amount of times Lochhead or Bertos and a few others bang in their crosses 15-20 metres from the by-line. Tonight I saw Lochhead twice just hit the ball over to no effect. He had space in front of him both times. He can beat a player so why not try to get down the paddock just a few yards more?
I'm sure Greenie would appreciate it.

Tim Brown does not have the technical ability to be a central midfielder in the A-League

based on what? daniel the last couple of weeks has been at his best for us. Hearfield has no first tough, scores occasionally, at best a bench player.

Queenslander 3x a year.

We didn't seem to be able to muster anything through the middle.  At the start all our attack seemed to go down the left, and they had us out numbered there 2-1....

Agreed Royal. Have been saying the same for weeks and commented that last week we did much less of this and actually got into the box and hit the byline before crossing. These aimless diagonal punts into the box are rarely going to cause any problems because they are floated in, no pace on the ball, and any header that is won is not going to trouble the keeper because its nearly impossible to get any power on the header. Although most of them we don't even get near to heading them anyway.

Costa scored from just such a cross.

Costa scored from a low cross fired in with a bit of pace, not a floated diagonal effort.

mate, that's Lochhead for ya.

runs straight down line never looks up and hoofs in the cross.

Good case in point. Other crosses wasted when they could have got further down the park

I feel we have got way ahead our ourselves. I said during the week that by beating the G. Coast by 6 we would not be ourselves any good. They are a very poor side. We were shown today that we are not as good as we think we are. The score could have been 5 or 6 one. We have some really good players, but we also have some that really should not even be on the park. Without naming them I am sure that everyone knows who they are. The worst aspect is that thay are AW's who will be playing on the 14th November.

Nope, cant think who you mean, care to put you bits on the block and name names?? This was the same team that demolished the opposition last week afterall.

Sigmund, Lockhead and Brown for starters, or were you watching a another game from me today

Some more hack journalism in the match report.

http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/football/3020017/Phoenix-return-to-the-real-world

"The Phoenix's cause was not helped by the early loss of goalkeeper Mark Paston, who left the field with a suspected hip injury in just the eighth minute after colliding heavily with an attacker."

He collided with Sigmund. Clearly.

"Barbarouses finally gave Wellington something to cheer about when he latched on to a Daniel cross in the 81st minute"

It was a cross by Ifill.

Do they even watch the game???

You think 3 of the better players for us this year shouldn't be on the park?
Permalink Permalink
over 16 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
well - i thought it was an entertaining game.

Sydney came out looking like they were playing a team that scored 6 goals last week and they really put it on the park against us.  played well and deserved a lead but maybe a bit more conservative play by us might have kept us closer at half time

Then second half we got back into it, costa played well.  entertaining footy from both sides. Sydney and us could both have scored a couple more goals (penalty included)

beaten by a better team, with a fair bit more pace than us.  might be a useful lesson for ricki and the lads to work through, i think they might get more out of this game than the GCU one, so long as they don't get down about it.  i thought they kept playing positively so hopefully they'll still be "up" as a squad.

over and out from me, enjoyed all your comments, even the usual smithy/Steve-O joust

have a good night all

After last week i'm surprised they didn't switch off after 80 minutes, as that is how long they think a game of football goes for.

Are you kidding? They all have one bad game. Kind of agree with brown however.
Sigmund and Lochhead are both good players. Sigmunds been outstanding lately, for both club and country

We could always try up the middle and playing the ball along the ground, not hoofball. just for a change, we are a bit predictable, down the wings and incoming crosses.
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

Sigmund? Sorry, did you just say Sigmund? As in Sigmund shouldn't be on the park for the Phoenix?

Leggy, I'm worried about you. See a doctor, you're obviously in some sort of delerium.

Lochhead and generally Brown can always start for me too. Weren't the worst on the park today that's for sure.

oh well. crashing back to earth. pretty crap first half. Sydney are a pretty good side to be fair. Brosque and Bridge combining well. I'd like to see the ball swung in from left hand corners (not Daniel outswinging). Also Daniel crossing dead balls on the right. Also agreewith whoever said Lochy shouldnt cross so early when he has space. Crowther is mental i think

Jeeze do you write the "soccer" reviews for the Dom Post or something, you seem to have the same appreciation for the nix.

Sigmund got caught out for blistering pace once today, had a decent game apart from that and has been outstanding this season, Lochhead had an up and down game but wasn't awful and what did Brown actually do wrong today, apart from get under one free header from a corner??

Funny you didn;t pick up on Muscat who had a torrid time or Bertos who was quiet again today who if you HAD to criticise the team today would be the more obvious candiates IMHO...

Oh and its LOCHHEAD...

Hearfield is a good option from the bench, decent enough player who can play a number of positions, at least until we can up the bench numbers from 4 to 5...

Nice one HN, almost as funny as Hearfield for Daniel.  Not quite, but almost.

After some poor early defending, I didnt think we were too bad.

We got lots of ball into the box, although some were of the Lochead floating variety.
We missed the penalty and then Brown headed over - we could really have been right back in that game.

Yeah I know Sydney had some more chances and should have had more than 3 goals, but it was much much less of a beating than the one we gave Gold Coast last week.

I thought Crowther was fine , apart from the second goal maybe.

Still confident we can win the next two games.
