I also thought Lochhead had his best game of the season - also went forward well at every opportunity. Brown - to be honest I think he is an only adequate player however he has the very redeeming feature of getting in to scoring positions and putting a few away.

-ves; We simply don't know how to put games away - it was all too familiar and predictable - last 10 minutes we lose our shape, get stretched, caught on the counter and insist on playing around with the ball in the red zone. Set pieces - I know we must practice corners and free kicks but we really don't look dangerous from either.

I still think we can and will make the playoffs but we are struggling to win because; we failed to sign a good 2nd striker (Costa's not the answer), we are still short a creative playmaker (Diego's not the answer) and we need a very good defensive midfielder (Lia's not up to it). The last item on my recruitment wish list is a player who is dangerous, in the air, from set pieces.

I can agree with most of this. The only issue I have with this is that Lia plays better with Brown that McKain does. Early in the year (and last year) they never really gelled. Since Lia has been in there, we have had 'better' results (read less losses)  Lia may not be the answer but he offers a little more going forward. McKain is an out and out brickwall defensive midfielder and offers nothing attacking in the form of a link from the back half to the front half of the field.

I thought the last half hour was VERY VERY negative by the Phoenix. All we seemed to do was just hoof it up field and sit back and wait for Melbourne to run it back  to us. Eventually they were going to score.

What they should have done is being right on the attack until the 85th min. 2-0 would have sealed it and it would have fnished 2-0. Melbourne wouldn't have tried at that point.

We threw it away. Gah!

hmmm went defensive way too early!!! can't see the point in defending like that when your playing against a team thats a man down.

thought Brown had a brilliant game, and Hearfield did really well also.

True, but credit to Melb for seizing the initiative, even if we did kind of hand it to them on a silver platter. They have more than enough quality to beat teams even when a man down, and Thompson is a huge handful at the best of times. Plus they defended very, very well, packing bodies in and around the penalty area and nullifying most of our attacks.

Think Lia is a nice tidy midfielder who closes down attacks, wins the ball back, puts in a good shift  and  passes the ball very well, which means Brown can get into those positions like he did to score today.  Effective doing the job he is being asked to do and certainly is an important player if we want to keep playing with 4 out and out attackers in the team.

If ever there was a time to stand up and start winning, it was against brisbane.

We need to start proving the critics wrong and win. We need to show the administrators that we deserve a 10yr licence.

We need to prove to the country that football is worth investing in etc..etc..we took a huge step forward on Nov 14. and 3 steps back when losing to brisbane and todays average effort.

To many varied "we"s in their for me...footbal is stil on a high ex AWs and Nix will bear dividends as well. MV are a good team..even with 10.
Nix wil bear dividends when FIFA pays up as per the news that came out today. I'm talking results on the park. MV is a good team. Credit to them for there efforts.

I'd be quiet BBS when you want to blame the ineptness of 11 players on the coach

Pot, Kettle, Black. Make a statement.

Jeff, come on mate. Take off the rose coloured. We went backwards after half time.
Picking it was another lame half team talk. At least Vidmar fronts up.
Fact is, it IS the coaches fault. FFS if its not, why have one?
Sure Durante has to cop some, but as said before, neither Ricki our Andrew are real leaders.
That is very, very obvious.

i agree with alot of your comments but when Mckane came on why not put him in defence as they were only playing one up front with Archie and why not push Troy up into a more midfield option which would have taken the place of Daniel leaving the park. As for some of the comments needing another striker it is my understanding that Hearfield has played striker most of his playing career and has an eye for goal this plus his mobility would be a fairly good option with Greenacre.

Setting aside our differing views on Lia, and acknowledging this is probably the worng thread..... we are a mid table team. What needs to change for us to be title contenders ? I think we are 3 players short - striker, AM and DM.
He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)

McKain offering nothing attacking? I'm sure I remember a few outstanding forward runs from him this and last season from defensive mid! Think thats being very harsh on him.

It's a hard one really isn't it, I don't think they are that far away from being a better team, the main issues I keep seeing is that our final ball is often poor, especially those aimless floaty crosses, we seem to never really challange at corners or free kicks into the box either, and then there seems to sometimes be a lack of belief or something and we stop playing football and start lumping the ball forward.

Perhaps we need to look at the squad and actually say that some of the players, even some of the fan favourite, actually arent good enough, not necessarily from a skill or techincal point of view, more a winning mentality that seems to be lacking.

Also we can't afford to carry both Daniel and Leo when they are both underperforming!

And we need another real option up front as boy we missed Greeancre today!!

And we have to be more consisntant for more that 45 mins of any one game..

It;s a step by step thing, we have moved up a level by signing the likes of Ifill and Greenacre, we need to do the same again this summer, which may be hard as Ricki will have his mind on the world cup I suspect!!

Would rather we ran with a smaller squad and emptied those not in the frame like Chen and Mulligan and used their wages to improve the quality, and to bolster the squad with some good kiwi yougsters.

Oh and we need a reserve team in some league somewhere to give those outwith the first 14 a regular game.

My thoughts...

Hearfield was outstanding tonight, showed that having pace is really a benefit to the team, and I think Muscat will have a long road back into the starting team as long as Hearfield doesn't make any screw-ups.

The two things that pissed me off the most...

Bertos, Ifill, Daniel, and everyone else with the ball near or outside the box... and NOBODY WANTS TO f**kING SHOOT.
Grow a set, take a shot, stop prancing about hoping to offload it to someone else and lose good possession.

Secondly, the absolute rubbish piss-poor quality of the crosses that were served up time after time after time by the Phoenix.
It's been a problem most of the season, was fixed for a while when we were scoring goals, now it's back to rubbish.

Tommy Oar showed us last week what you can do with a number of quality crosses into the box.

The team really needs to forget this bullsh*t idea of always trying to cross to the far post, because 9 times out of 10 they overhit the ball to the other side of the field, and waste yet more opportunities.
Aim for the near post, or in the middle, then if you f**k it up, which the team seems likely to do at the moment, it won't go clear over the top of everyone, and might actually reach someone at the far post.

Time for the team to nut up or shut up.

These are standard expectations of following a mid table team.
I don't expect to win every game, and understand when we draw against good sides.
I'm disappointed just like everyone else, but think it's stupid making comments about the coach like yours when the team is having it's best season by a mile.

Thought there was a distinct lack of urgency and passion today, mirrored by crowd performance as well.  Melbourne were there for the taking second half but we eased off and paid the price.  We do make it hard for ourselves at times.

Direct consequence of playing 2-8-0.

We threw that away tonight, could and should have killed it off but we didnt, again.

I get a bit fed up with this "best season ever" thing that gets rolled out, yes we are doing better than last year, but I want us to be more ambitious than that, there is potential here to be up challenging at the top of the league, and to do so we need to win games like today, this "best season ever so stop moaning" thing suggests we should take what we get served and be happy and keep quiet and keep turnign up and saying "well we are only mid table team, so yes throwing away the lead against a 10 man team is just dandy" when it's not good enough IMHO.

Fair play to moan. But saying to sack the coach despite all the positives and the best season ever is a bit odd. You argued something completely different to what was being talked about. yes, frustrated we drew, but not about to sack the coach over a draw. NOBODY is saying that throwing away a lead against a 10 man team is "dandy"

Allegedly

I got it exactly right.  Unfortunately I was at a bar and not on the forums so nobody will believe me and give me the trip to SA.

Definitely two points lost.  So disappointing.  Good on Durante for getting stuck into the ref, I have no problems with players giving them a piece of their mind if they're failling.

What the hell was Siggy thinking?  I'm hoping it was an accident.  If he gets cited then I'll be furious.  Yes Leijer's a prick, but beat him up afterwards where you can't be seen and cited.  At least McKain could come in for him if he's suspended.

Costa was deadweight and should have doubled our lead, but credit to Ricki for putting another attacking minded player on.

Whoever said Ricki and Andrew lack balls clearly lack eyes.  They're both great.  Nearly collapsed when Dura chipped Paston, though.

Hearfield was great, credit to him.  Let's hope for three points next week.  We're behind Newcastle on the table for goodness sake.  Newcastle!

Did sky do a after match press confrnce? Interviews etc? would like to know what players and management said.

Fox Sports here crossed to the Pre-Game show for Adelaide vs Newcastle straight after the final siren. Normally we don't see post-match stuff from your home games until at the earliest (Saturday) or until the Highlights show on Monday night.

Absolute bullsh*t.  You are saying it is acceptable to abuse a referee if they have made mistakes which is a twat of an attitude.

All I do is make the stuff I would've liked
Reference things I wanna watch, reference girls I wanna bite
Now I'm firefly like a burning kite
And yousa fake fuck like a fleshlight
